As for the story, you need to go back to the hedge and find the hedge lab. you had the right idea at the paperclip but you stopped moving forward when you say the egg sacks lol.. you have to keep going past the frisbee along the branches until you get to the lab. you can also use the scanner to find resources you are looking for much easier.
Watching you early game is so frustrating lol.. you need to learn to BLOCK/PERRY! lol If you equip the entire ant armor you become invisible to the ants unless you attack them lol. Eating weevils and afids heal you! you don't need to carry smoothies all the time. lol...and for god sake analyze the damn red ant mandibles! lol
I'm remembering when I first played the game and yes I did watch Markiplier play a bit of the game I still forgot so much, but not the quick build menu.
oh, and the red ants are NOT attacking you lol.. your base is directly in the path of their programmed scouting path. The little ones are just walking around looking for food..it's the soldier ants that will attack if you get to close to them. If you fight a soldier ant then the little ones will help out in the fight. again..they are NOT attacking you lol
This game reminds me of the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
I like to think that's what Obsidian was going for here. I HATE survival games, but this one has sucked me in for that reason alone. Loved that movie as a kid.

To get the next tier of tools you need to kill specific bugs,
You can get stink bug parts for the gas mask from spider sacs
And finally each of the labs has it own unique and secret entrance
