First we got the Elektra video on the day Elektra becomes the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, then this happened. Next Wednesday, we'll get more Daredevil news
Considering how all the three Seasons already showcased Matt at his worst moments and the series ended in a happy note with him, Foggy and Karen reunited I think Seasons 4 would be a little lighter, probably adapting stories such as Daredevil yellow or Mark Waid's run
@@Matter-Dark I felt like Season 3 held back a bit on putting Matt through the ringer, especially considering what happens in Born Again and Bendis's Run and Guardian Devil
@@RojoDawg31 something huge happened in say issue 25, for the next 7 issues Bendis ignores that and shows a story completely unrelated. It's not until the next volume begins that he picks up on that cliffhanger. Most have sucked reading monthly but binging it is pretty cool
I don't have to imagine it, it was one hell of an cliffhanger to leave off on before Bendis & Maleev went on a hiatus. While it was a little frustrating, I love David Mack's work and having him return to tell another Echo story was pretty great, so it wasn't so bad. I can confirm that after re-reading this run that it was much more enjoyable to read continuously than it was to read piecemeal. A lot of readers and comics professionals at the time bemoaned the change in storytelling, referring to it as 'decompression', since the more classic comic approaches would tell a complete story in a single issue or over the course of two or three at most. Bendis was seen as one of the largest offenders in regard to decompression in comics storytelling. I get it but I do enjoy when a skilled writer like Bendis or Grant Morrison approaches their run planned out, like they're writing a complete novel but it can definitely be detrimental to enjoyment in monthly installments. Still, 20 years on, fans can enjoy these runs in collected formats and Bendis' Daredevil and Morrison's New X-Men really shine as longer form stories.
This was a great continuation of the Bendis/Maleev run of Daredevil. I like how you examine how the second of the run is told much more from the perspective of how others view Matt’s actions. The first half was clearly showing Matt’s slow path of self-destruction from his perspective. It only makes sense for Bendis and Maleev to see how far Matt has come to becoming his own worse enemy. Honestly, I thought Brubaker did a great job continuing the cliffhanger Bendis left off on. Can’t wait for a Brubaker video in the future. Until then I look forward for whatever you have next in store for Darecember. Also, you just made realize how really weird Guardian Devil was in retrospect.
Your coverage of this run has made this run (specifically the 2 volume omnibus versions of it) one of the my most sought out purchases! Daredevil is my favourite Marvel hero, and among the pantheon of the best characters in my mind. Your essays do him and his rain slicked urban inferno justice!
Great video! Bendis and Brubaker runs on Daredevil are one my favorite comic book runs of all (although I like more the Brubaker run). The way they showcase Matt's fallen from grace and eventual rebirth are incredible, specially the bendis part which had the amazing Alex Malleev's art, which helps gives the story a very dark and noir atmosphere, very fitting for the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
Brubaker is a great writer, but although I overall like his Daredevil run, his story even more brutally brought Matt down. The man got no wins under Ed's pen.
I do too, but I don’t want it to just be an Arkham clone. Would be cool if it had a full on Phoenix Wright style court case element, so you have to be both Matt and Daredevil. And if you consistently fail to win court cases, you lose the game.
Outstanding overview, it's been several years since I read this run, and you're evaluation of its themes and plot makes me want to revisit it to see if I enjoy it more the second time.
Bendis very cleverly combined a 2nd rate Miller with the Sopranos and produced a hit. Of course, it would have been hopeless without Alex Maleev's perfectly matching artwork.
I loved this run, the depiction of downward spiral towards depression it's really well done. The only downside to it it's the character of Mila, like I feel as if bendis didn't ever care about the character and was there just to have a romantic interest (and what they to her after with brubaker and so on, was really lazy and cruel to her)
The second half of this run is one of the strongest stretches in modern superhero comics period. Entire run is damn near unparalleled. Incredible breakdown and analysis bravo
The Bendis run was when I started reading Daredevil comics after the Ben Affleck film got me hooked on the character and I've been a huge Daredevil fan ever since.
Daredevil is my favorite comic superhero, and Maleev and Bendis' run is near perfect for me. You did an excellent job on both videos showing why it's so great. Can't wait to see more.
Bendis and Maleevs run is what got me into Daredevil. I remember they day I went into my local shop and asked for a recommendation. He gave me the trade for the first ark and I was hooked. i have the entire run now. And have reread it multiple times.
Daredevil is unique to me, the only hero that seemed to be vulnerable at all times. He was in even worse shape AFTER he put the costume on. The Netflix show did a really good job of portraying him. The weakest season was 2 when he had the armored costume. In season 3 he was just a guy recovering from near death again and they gave the armor to Bullseye. That's Daredevil...the gifted underdog who can't catch a break.
I give Brian Michael Bendis shit a lot, but I can’t lie when I say that his DD run was the fucking best. Waid is still my favorite (thanks to you👍🏿🔥), but Bendis is definitely up there
Ever since I found your channel earlier this year I cannot get enough of your videos Matt :) and I know you have probably had this request many times before, but any chance you could do a video on Grant Morrison's "Doom Patrol" in the future?
Great content bro, I’m loving these Daredevil videos 👌 Have you ever considered making some manga videos? Berserk, Vagabond, and HunterxHunter are some of my favorite comics of all time.
I was never that thrilled about Bendis’ writing and storytelling. And Meleevs art is a little tough to take in for me. I appreciate the video because the idea of the story is a really powerful one. Thanks Matt Draper for finally letting me read this character arc hahahaha 😅😅😅
Bendis is the man, I loved his take on Ares god of war and how ares became a builder. That’s such human writing, ares mentions getting 44 dollars an hour I’m all for it
Who would say that now Elektra reaplaces Matt and even walks with his partner Alice finally something good, after the beating that Itachi Uchiha of Japonese Manga gave to Marvel Comics they are reacting.
It drove me away from the book. I picked it back up when Brubaker took over. I have since reread Bendis' entire run and I still don't see what everyone is going on about. I respect Matt Draper, but I think a lot of people who profess to love this run go out of their way to overlook a lot of crap.
