This is an example of when a writer, an artist and a character seem to be made for each other. Personally, I think Maleev's art and the colorists and inkers are what took this run to another level and made it into a modern classic. Great showcase!
Bendis’ run on Daredevil shows his best strengths as a writer. His more street level characters approach works perfectly in this run, along with the gorgeous art by Alex Maleev. Bendis’ best stuff tends to be either Ultimate Spider-Man, the more gritty heroes like Powers, Jessica Jones and Daredevil, his early stuff like Torso and Fire or his more created owned titles like Scarlett or Jinx/Goldfish. Bendis seems to have forgotten what made his work great and has relied on weird creative choices and his constant use of dialogue that just goes on for too long. Things like his Avengers run, Iron Man run, Civil War II or hell, what he’s doing currently at DC with Superman and Young Justice. The only modern Bendis comic that was up to his early works was his Defenders series for Marvel Legacy or even some of his Jinxworld stuff. Otherwise, he just needs to tone it down because he is a nice dude (I met him at a Comic signing at Midtown Comics Downtown Back in July where he signed my Daredevil trades). I want to see him be a great writer. But for now, all I can hope for is the best.
Snapper Reviews 13:00 So does that mean that we are completely and fully responsible for our own problems and guilt? Does that me mean he only makes his problems worse? I would respectfully argue that he didn’t choose his tragedies and those are not normal situations where he is alone so he doesn’t know how to cope and real with them.. Is that what Bendis is trying to convey???
Bendis' run over the 2000's was unbelievable. Idk how he did it, but he created an amazing interconnected story that is immeasurably better than all the MCU movies combined...

This was my favorite comic book run of all time. Brilliant writing by bendis absolutely incredible artwork from maleev and so many iconic moments. This is a series so good I can revisit it at almost any time.
This was the first time I read an ongoing run from start to finish, and I still credit it to this day as the series that made me a lifelong comic book fan.
As petty a complaint as it is, I think issue 50 should have had some kind of Miller art during the Kingpin fight. Feels odd not to have it, though in all fairness Miller wasn't...the same guy at this point, so to speak.
This was a really good video. Whilst I do personally prefer Miller & Brubaker's runs on the character, the video made me appreciate Bendis' run on the character more.
@@jamesjackson6563 Definitely. Based on the drawings, it really seems like Timm likes Daredevil. Very dynamic poses, including one of Daredevil swinging with Black Widow.
@@rydergoodrich3346 yeah Bruce timm has a very unique and distinct art style I honestly think his art can work for anything even non superhero projects but he really should tackle some marvel characters Daredevil especially though
Whoo! That was intense, Matt! You nailed it with that VA in that last bit. The editing really popped in this one. I love how you played with depth. It made it feel like the panels are coming out of the screen.
This was some of Bendis best work, before his success got over his head and became dependent on the same tricks over and over. But, since he wanted to do more a crime comic than a superhero one he did ignored the easy way to disprove the revelation of a hero secret identity, asking a colleague to put on your costume while everyone sees the civilian identity in front of them, which was the first thing Brubaker did.
Hell yeah, this is the episode I’ve been waiting for! Hope to see aEnnis’s Punisher “maxx” get and episode one day. I’ve said once, I’ll say it a million times. Best channel out there.
I really appreciate this video and the last video you did about a run on Daredevil because it shows me there's more great stuff than just what Frank Miller contributed to the character, but the drawback is this means I'm going to have more stuff to collect lol
Looks like I got another set of trades on my list for comics to pick up. I do like cynical and dark takes on various genres and characters. This reminds me of Season 3 of the Netflix series but where Matt went to the light and became the hero he was meant to be in the end, here he trends the line and becomes more similar to fisk.
This is a recurring pattern. Daredevil snaps: "think youve seen me angry before? Well!" Spider-man snaps: "im spider-man... no more!" Then matt blows off some steam and gets out of his funk thanks to intervention by friends. And spidey sees something really bad almost happen and uncle bens ghost guilt trips him.

You continue to amaze me with your knowledge of the comicbook medium and how you manage to describe why certain things are artistically good in such an articulate manner. Gives me inspiration and I think I know where ti start. Scott McCloud's Understanding Comicbooks seems to be the book to read.
I just discover your channel and Its so refreshing to see. As a big fan of comic books, there`s so litle youtube channels that review comic books stories with this depth. Now all is about their movies countreparts. Keep the great work. You earned a suscriber. Hope you one day give a review of the Punisher Max saga that started with Born by Garth Ennis, that in my opinion, its one of the best run published by marvel alongside with Bendis Daredevil.
I would also like to point out the dark knight returns inspiration in the final scene, Fascist DD is really something. I always miss Alex Maleev, Bill Sienkiewicz, and David Mack art when I read the Chip Zdarsky Run, By far the best Daredevil artists ever.
This is my favourite comics series of all time. I love the fact that you made a tribute to it. This video captures everything I love about that comic, you are the best, Matt!
Great summing up. This is an excellent dark cinematic comic, if like me, you like that kind of a thing. Plenty of nuance but perhaps a little too depressing for some tastes? Anyway, I dont think Bendis ever worked with anyone more suitable than Maleev. Alex is brilliant with expressions.
Great video on one of the best runs on one of Marvel's most complex characters. This is a really impacting assessment - really enjoyed it. Could we also have End of Days please? I know Marvel will never actually end any of their iconic characters (who's going to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs?) but End of Days was the ending this arc deserved.
Marvel knights dd are long with bp and inhumans are the runs along with the ultimate line saved marvel. Bendis DD run is a masterclass in crime fiction in any medium. P.S. matt you should cover some black panther like priest run as well as hudlin and Coates
this arc was followed by what i believed was the worst on Matt's psyche (which i hate in terms of empathy for the character, and the villain) Without Fear. this series is a master piece, great work, what you think of Without Fear, Matt?
Funny enough, "Bendis speach" is exactly what turned me off his run, that and the cutting of Bullseye. I followed DD since just after Millers run and caught most issues from 100 up till Bendis. The constant renumbering didn't help either. For the most part I liked Malleeves art. Lastly, Daredevil himself has been on my "DD's worst enemies" list for a while now.
@@MattDraper What about Soule's run? I don't think it was amazing but it was pretty good. There were some intersting new characters and a few cool ideas. I loved Ron Garney's art the begining though
