ALT-J - THE DREAM / 2022 / ATLANTIC / ALT-POP
6/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
An Awesome Wave...was 10 years ago?
Well fuck.
Someone told me “Get Lucky” was “retro” yesterday.
I dont't know if anyone has pointed it out, but I appreciate how well Anthony is at expressing a certain sentiment just based off his thumbnails. Everytime I start a video I guess the score based off his face alone, and I'm right like 8/10 times.
I tried guessing some after reading this comment, and I got the first 3 in a row. Then I got every other one wrong
Lol, I disagree, I have literally seen him wear a yellow shirt and then take it off revealing he was wearing a red shirt all along.
@@jeremyscheatday7305 i think it's more about the expression of his face. usually excited with good reviews, looking disappointed etc.
I'm really good at reading the score by only reading the description. Like I just scroll down to the bottom of the description and suddenly I know it's a 6/10. I'm so awesome.
you mean you are right a light to decent 8 out of 10 times.
Anthony, you can’t give this album a 6 just because Get Better made you cry
Factual.
@@LeBeautiful LeGoat 😤😤😤
Im sad that "Losing my mind" hasn't left that big of an impression on him. It is one of the most goosebumpy songs i have heard and it has become my favorite altj songs. It made me space out a few times on the street and the "is it easy to remember what it means to be a man" almost made me cry at the gym.
My favorite off the album for sure!
The drums ruin it for me
Great point, I felt the same
Definitely my favorite track of the new album thus far.
I love losing my mind too
Whilst flawed in the second half, I honestly think this is one of the most creative Alt J records yet. I’m genuinely surprised about Philadelphia, I think the progressions in that song are lushes and beautiful. Definitely there best album since they debuted, really mature post covid sound.
Definitely agree here. There’s so much creativity here. Like Hard Drive has so many little noises and touches that make every bit so entertaining. I found myself never knowing where each song would go. It does fall off a bit after Philadelphia tho unfortunately
“post covid sound”
It is really creative and I can definitely appreciate that. I love Philadelphia. I do prefer their last album though.
Please don’t say post covid sound
Never understood how he’s never been that big of a fan of Alt-J. I’ll always love them if only for being unpredictable and fresh.
Wouldn’t say he’s never been a fan. He gave their first two albums an 8 and 7 respectively.
Bruh he gave Awesome Wave an 8
huh? he starts every alt-j review by saying how much he enjoys their sound??
To me the lyrics "Your look defined my 2009" on Get Better gets me emotionally because it's one of those times a song gets unexpectedly very personal and particular it feels real. Like it could've just been any song with an emotional narrative but it's just a song. But hearing those lines adds a feeling that the person Joe sings to was an actual person and there's so much sense of background between the two lovers, which makes it extremely moving.
Thank you for putting this in words. I feel the same way.
The fact that it's about someone dying in a car crash makes it so much more emotional.
Ive always liked their lyricism. Taro has always been my favorite song of theirs because how real it feels, especially if you know the story behind it.
@@sherideschain where do you get that from? To me, the video pretty clearly shows that she died due to an illness.
Regardless of that, I'm surprised Cluethony Lesstano thought it was about love in pandemic times???
Yes! I feel the same way about the Nutella line as well. Makes things very personal and real
This album has grown on me and I find myself listening to the whole thing as 'one piece' quite enjoyable, more so than most albums. the mellow vocals and waves of sound that come and go really make me feel somewhere i'm not. I'm very happy with this album and feels more cohesive than they're last album
Yeah, it really is a great listen straight through. Even the tracks towards the end that I wasn’t initially crazy about have started to grow on me. Losing My Mind and Powders were already decent from my first listen through so they help blanket the few lulls before that
I'm genuinely shocked you didn't like Chicago and Philadelphia. They're some of alt-j's best songs in my opinion, and it seems a lot of the fan community agrees. Definitely an 8/10 for me.
I think Chicago is in the middle cuz it lowkey fades out as soon as it gets going, but Philadelphia is amazing omg!
Omg thank you! Nobody likes Chicago and I don’t know why?? It’s a great song
Chicago and Philadelphia are the songs that made the album for me. I loved an awesome wave and this is definitely the best record since then. Didn't expect such a great album after relaxer
100% agree
Philadelphia is definitely top 3 but I didn't like Chicago either
I'm surprised you completely missed out on the gut punch around the 4 minute mark of Get Better, it's less so just about love and desire but also the moment you learn about the fact that the woman the character is singing about passed away during COVID times and he's literally sitting there hoping one day she miraculously gets better and just emerges from her room is honestly one of the best moments on an Alt-J album since the moment where what's going on in Breezeblocks finally hit me.
Also Hard Drive Gold is easily one of my fav tracks of the year so far the DON'T BE AFRAID TO MAAAKE TO MAKE MONEY BOY refrain is so cheeky and I love it. Has a lot more of the satire that something like Mood Ring by Lorde was trying to do without completely missing the goal.
The Dream really does kind of feel like the best Alt-J has sounded since their first album.
What is this big moment in Breezeblocks?
Honestly I may be absolutely deranged in this but as someone who's listened to them since around when Relaxer dropped and was completely obsessed with the band for about a year straight,
I prefer this album over An Awesome Wave. Maybe I just find AAW tedious these days but I feel like the dream is just much more diverse and ambitious.
@@RLSteffler ?
@@FloatingLeaf1111 true, doesn't feel like a 'gut punch' though compared to the girl who died in the song, and you have to watch the video to see it
@@andrewmccudden5882 if you've got a question ask it
Anthony I think you flipped the 9 upside down accidentally without noticing, hopefully you can fix this!
Oh please lol. Go put this comment on the MBDTF redux review
I do like this album but after Philadelphia it just takes too much of a slump. I'd enjoy Walk a Mile and Losing My Mind more if Powders was a stronger close like Taro
Update: Walk A Mile is amazing and I'm sorry I doubted it
Definitely agree, the last leg is kinda weak
Powders is fucking lovely. Totally disagree.
@@mhbackman being lovely doesn't make it a good album closer
Right???? Walk a mile is so amazing I’ve really grown to love it
Walk A Mile is easily one of my favorite songs. Every time I listen to it, I have this intense psychological reaction to it. Not sad nor happy just very inspired.
I like RELAXER more than this album for how bold it was. I like that all the songs sound so different from one another. Took more risks.
alt-j is such a weird band for me. some of my favorite songs ever are from them but every release they have, I love love love one or two songs and dislike the rest completely.
I feel exactly the same way
Yeah they seem to struggle to hit on a consistent formula, which I think stems from their unwillingness to stick to structured songwriting
definitely agree there
Love yo pfp 🙏🙏🙏
For me, it was like I couldn't appreciate the singles until I heard them as part of the whole album. I loved the first two albums as whole pieces.
Every single alt-J review he's given, he did not care for the singles and then when the album came out they grew on him lol
Reason why I wish he gave this album some time before he reviewed. I feel like that’s how every Alt-J album goes. Definitely enjoyed this one more than relaxer to say the least
This album is way better than Relaxer. More at a 7 for me.
Lol, you have a great UA-cam name. Great Frank Ocean nod
@@jerrys1 Thanks! Blonde is in my top 10 for sure.
Relaxer is literally my favourite of all of theirs to be honest 😭
I definitely enjoy this record a bit more, like at least a 7/10 for me. Only songs that fell short were Powders, Chicago and Losing my Mind while I enjoyed every bit of the rest. It doesn’t help that Powders leaves the record on a weird note but damn I thought for sure you would’ve LOVED walk a mile, I can’t stop listening. As an Alt-J Stan I really loved this review and sure I don’t agree with some points but I at least see where you’re coming from. Many tracks took their time to warm up to me so maybe it’ll do the same for you like the singles. I am however glad that we can agree that this album has much stronger moments than RELAXER. Hit me like that snare is easily my least favorite Alt-J song.
I think that relaxer is way better, except for the house of the rising sun, that cover fucking sucks…
I got a little bit disappointed by U&ME
You should try chicago again. I didn't like it at first but then i found the mood
I wasn’t crazy about Chicago at all but when I saw them preform it live this past Friday in Pittsburgh I can’t stop listening to it
Totally agree about 'Powders'-the spoken-word stuff initially sounded dumb, then I felt just OK with it, then rounded back on eye-rolling. Depends on the mood for whether I'll let it play through.
I love this album. I have to give it an 8/10.
I really enjoyed this album! Philadelphia and Chicago are the highlights for me
Yea Philadelphia was definitely the highlight for me
Oh no, another non 7. Gimme a sec need to delete it from my library.
i love the whole album and almost every song but its nice to see a review
I liked this record quite a bit. It kinda wowed me at some points where i definitely wasn't expecting it.
I only listened to this twice while working, so I don't know any of the actual song titles, but I really enjoyed this. Didn't blow me away, but it sounded like a very good Alt-J album. Liked it a lot
Chicago is one of the eerier songs I've heard, idk if that was their intent but that was my reaction, with the instrumental slowly fading in and the clashing harmonies later in the song. Pretty weird song that I kinda like. The Actor is my favorite though:)
I don't care for some of alt-J's music, but I appreciate it - and, unless something changes, will always give them a listen!
Friendly reminder beach house’s new album once twice a melody chapter 4 just dropped at midnight.
Lol do we all have the same music taste.
Ok this is my first time really keeping up with every new release of the year but is it normal to start off a year with this much good music?
These are the kind of crunchy reviews I love from Needle Drop
please just do that Korn review, it makes me crazy what your opinion would be about it. I would predict a strong 2 to a light 3.
It's weird because I feel I have a quite similar opinion on most of the tracks, except for The Actor and Losing My Mind that I think are two of the best tracks her (especially The Actor with those feminine voices singing "He's never gonna make it, He's never gonna make it in LA"... Goosebumps!) but I have a much more positive feeling on this album. I think this is going to be an album that will grow on my mind for the next months. It's already beginning with a track like Philadelphia, which I considered being the weakest of the record when I first heard it, but that I am beginning to really like. I'm rather feeling a strong 7 or an 8 for this.
(And Relaxer is an underrated album).

Awesome that you did this! If I may make a suggestion for the future - the numbers are a bit confusing like this, how about changing them to stars:
******* ******* (0)
******* ****** (3)
@@CM18A1 I know the numbers are a bit confusing but I'm not sure what you mean
I have always seen Get Better as about dealing with loss after sickness, rather than about the sickness itself. The line "I still pretend you're out of sight in another room" definitely gives me the feeling that he is singing about someone who has passed and he does not know how to deal with the person being gone.
Anthony saying this album is 'Alt Right Alt Right Alt Right" came out of left field.
Left Hand Free is the best song you’ve ever heard in your entire life? Interesting opinion Melon
So I’ve always been a fan of Alt-J but missed the announcement of their new album as both my parents died at the end of last year. The first new song I heard after their passing was the single “Get Better” and if you know the lyrics, I’m sure you’ll understand why I cried 3 times upon my first listen. The rest of the album definitely left a lot to be desired but my emotional attachment to that song has made it completely impossible to be objective with my thoughts on the album. You did a fantastic job once again Melon Man ❤️
Strong 6. I wasn't sure if this album held together or went up its own ass as a whole, but I think the latter is a bit more true than the former. It has good stuff on it; "Get Better" and "Philadelphia" are my favorites, with the possible additions of "Bane" and "Losing My Mind." But on the whole it's a mixed bag.
Have been a fan of alt-j for many years… this record is hard to pinpoint tho and think a light 6 is more accurate for me. Bane is such a good start I think… but once you hear the rest you realise that there are only a few “hero” tracks, including Bane, which played *first*… maybe not the best move? I actually enjoyed listening all through Relaxer more than The Dream now that I think about it. 🤷🏻♀️
Was waiting for you to mention the ice cream line
We getting a zeal and ardor review?
Came out last year, but I really reccomend you review Sad Night Dynamite's mixtape. Really solid shit.
These guys are super nice, they answered my question in an ama
THIS ALBUM IS FROM THE FUTURE. i am glad that you reviewed it....they have been so consistently inconsistent. I love them in a totally healthy and non-obsessive way.
you should review the new methyl ethel album, easily a 9/10, some really cool art pop vibes
Yo Needle you gotta review Big Krit's new album Digital Roses Don't Die!!!
I was very satisfied with this album I personally think that bane was they’re 2nd best intro behind intro and I also thought that Philadelphia is one of my new favorites especially with that opera singer which I thought was amazing but I’m not a big fan of hard drive gold it kind of reminds me of left hand free which is a great song but in my opinion not an amazing alt j song but overall I was satisfied 9/10
Which alt j intro do u think is best??
@@Cristina-xy8mg the first for sure
I love 3ww alt j truly knows how to open an album
they’re definitely the best
Love your video's Anthony! Never stop sharing your thoughts :)
Hard drive gold is the Left hand free of that album. Both are upbeat and commercially viable songs planted early in the tracklist that have absolutely nothing in common both lyrically and musically. I hope the band doesn't make fun of me for liking it this time.
Do a video on this year’s record store day. Sosa bros finally getting that S4TW vinyl 🔥😎👌
love sosa
This ones a strong 6 light 7 for me.

I got a song filled with shit for the strong-willed
When the world gives you a raw deal
Sets you off 'til you scream, "Piss off! Screw you!"
When it talks to you like you don't belong
Or tells you you're in the wrong field
When something's in your mitochondrial

god is dead and joseph biden has killed him
Biden is god and joseph dead has killed him
is and god has him dead biden joseph killed

Going to review the new Zeal and Ardor?
interesting record - band new to me - anthony you gave a balanced perspective on this record
Bane has to be one of my favorite songs from last year. It's such an earworm and I love how it shifts from chanty drama to slow and groovy then operatic.

It’s so weird that Alt-J either forges the most incredible songs you’ve heard or they shit on a keyboard and then sell it.
