It's also painfully 'jammy', which many people, myself included, cannot stand. I admittedly have not heard every Snarky Puppy song, and Lingus has it's moments; I just can't get into them overall as a group. If you bare with me, I think the best way of describing their sound to me is that it's less interesting than it is *trying* to sound interesting. The music to me sounds like they are saying "hey listen to us, aren't we cool?! you're supposed to like us!", which is what I think Anthony was getting at when he said it's jazz's equivalent to a college thesis. I guess it sounds somewhat superficial to my ear, kind of like the guy who we all know who isn't interesting/cool so he makes up for it by telling everyone how interesting/cool he is when we all know it's bullshit. As pseudo-intellectual as this sounds, it's as if they are telling me to like them rather than just giving me a reason to like them on my own--if that makes sense. Lotta mumbo-jumbo in there, I know. But I am trying to give a well thought out reason as to why I, and perhaps other people don't particularly care for Snarky Puppy. I don't hate them, wouldn't be upset if they were playing in the background, but can't force myself to put them on for more than a couple minutes before getting tired of it. And yes, I am a musician who can appreciate the technical ability, yes I am into all kinds of music, etc etc blah blah blah...
@@WinedandDined27 i can kinda see where you are coming from. However, I would say it’s the community surrounding the band that kinda has that atmosphere of insisting that you have to like them. Personally, I never really got that impression by the group themselves.
@@brysonmiller3113, I wasn't talking about the band verbally giving off that air or even doing so in their attitude--but rather instrumentally, musically. What's that thing people always say about Vampire Weekend? That their music sounds like what their fanbase looks like or something like that? Similar concept here. Idk anything about the band themselves, it just sounds like when I hear a song from them it's the musical equivalent of some guy telling me how cool he is instead of just actually being cool and letting me figure it out for myself. The classic "show don't tell" deal, albeit a bit more nuanced and analogical in this instance. And/or, to use the college thesis thing again, it's this perfectly written paper; grammar is on point, 10k words, lush vocabulary, etc. but isn't really saying anything. Kinda shallow, I suppose. Even tho they are talented, I guess I feel like any group of extremely competent musicians could do the same thing. We've all read stuff like that before whereas we're reading it we think for a brief moment that we're getting something of real poignancy or depth due to it seeming to be technically well written, only to realize it's just a bunch of big words that don't mean much at the end of the day. Nothing stuck with you, because the writer didn't actually have much to say, and instead was just sort of showing off his writing ability (think current Eminem). Not a perfect comp, but there are elements of what makes modern Eminem less pleasant than older Eminem in Snarky Puppy for me, along with the somewhat abstract "show don't tell" bit I previously iterated. It feels weird to go so in-depth on why I DON'T like something, but when you stated you couldn't see how anyone could not like them it actually piqued my interest, seeing as I don't like them but never really pinpointed why specifically.
“cole’s music appeals but doesn’t always impress” is perfectly said about j cole’s music. People were acting like he dropped black on both sides or something when in reality he just dropped an okay rap album
@Perverted Alchemist I used to be a cole Stan and this is 1000% true. He can drop a 12 track album full of songs to the level of Middle Child if he would stop staying true
to me, J Cole and Big Sean are the two most mediocre rappers of their generation. They are literally as mid as mid gets; if you were to make a graph of every single rapper of the 2010s, from the underground to the mumble rap to the pop to whatever else, they would be dead centre in the middle of it all. I have never liked either (tho I Do It was admittedly pretty catchy when it first dropped). I think both of them are capable of much better music but both put out the most generic sounding, run of the mill, average (in terms of lyrics, production, and even voice) hip hop of the 2010s. I'm not a hater at all, I think they both have it in them to put out monster albums, I just haven't heard it yet. I could care less, either way, tho. I'm only here to say I never saw the hype in either, especially Cole.
@@WinedandDined27 the only reason there not mediocre is because there worst but jcole definently has great songs so what u said is definently a stretch even though his albums are so mid certain songs stand out to me in his discography

@@21innocentbystander Yes. It brought back the heaviness of White Pony with cleaner production, but not so clean that it sounded shiny (ya know, like a good metal album should be).
Ohms is really underwhelming for me. I liked the way they tried to evolve their sound on Gore and I was hoping they were going to push that enveloppe. Ohms feels like a step way backwards.
I feel like the biggest problem was that he wasn't reviewing the album at face value--instead assuming that the band was trying to go for a neo-soul sound, as opposed to blazing their own trail. Of course he's going to be disappointed when the album doesn't match his preconceived notion of what neo-soul should sound like.
Learning that Fantano doesn't like Snarky Puppy or Hiatus Kaiyote very much probably explains why I find myself disagreeing with his opinions so often lmao. Those two groups are pretty essential to my taste.
I was wondering where these are too. He talked about them last year in another video: My Worst Reviews. Still don't think he'll change his opinions on most of them a year later but you never know
Maybe Salem's King Night too? As much as I agreed with that review, he kind of brought that backlash on himself for giving the foundation of an entire subculture such a low score.

Deftones - Ohms TOOL - Fear Inoculum Royal Blood - Self-Titled Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep of Reason Don’t forget the rock and metal fans Smackthony Smacktano!
Unfortunately, Mouth Dreams’s (currently) like and dislike ratio is 3.7k likes to 4.3k dislikes. Fantano went with the most disliked reviews by ratio, instead. Mouth Dreams will probably get featured in a sequel if it ever happens.
The one that frustrated me the most was Meshuggah's The Violent Sleep of Reason. Not so much because it was a negative view- it's fine if he has a differing opinion from the general consensus- but because he gave it the "Not Good" treatment. An album that is receiving critical acclaim left and right and then ends up on multiple "best of" lists at the end of the year seems out of place for what "Not Good" is supposed to represent. He one time used the example of Kendrick Lamar hypothetically releasing a 3/10 album, and how in that situation, he wouldn't simply give it a "Not Good" because of the significance of Kendrick's music in his scene. By that logic, Meshuggah shouldn't be able to receive a "Not Good" either. Beyond the fact that his opinion of that album was an extreme minority one, Meshuggah is really influential in the metal scene and lumping them in with the "It's not even worth analyzing" review format seemed insulting to Meshuggah's lasting legacy and influence over their specific genre. I understand that Kendrick is a much more significant public figure than Meshuggah, so maybe my comparison doesn't hold up, but I do feel like as a metal fan he was really off the mark on that one.
I can't call myself a true metal fan, as I find 99% of it to be rather shit. So my words don't hold a ton of weight admittedly. That being said, I enjoy some meshuggah. But that album was a bit of a dud to me as well.
This kinda makes me wish he would do full artist reviews, similar to Mic the Snare. Like imagine listening to him go through his feelings on all of the Dance Gavin Dance albums, then give their entire career a collective score of "high 3 to low 4" lmao
House of Sugar by (Sandy) Alex G is the one for me. The production, the eclecticism, the melodies and the absolute heart and soul and colour put into that album puts it so far above a 5/10. I love an album that can take me on a tour through a complete world of sound, and that's that album for me. Also in general, I think Anthony is pretty harsh on The National.

Damn that Snarky Puppy take probably made more people mad than any of these reviews lmao
I had to double take there, Snarky Puppy is one of my favorite groups. I don’t really see what there is to not like about them.
Especially talking about Sylva. Literally the best jazz record of the decade
@@brysonmiller3113, I suppose to me it's kind of derivative sounding (of what specifically I couldn't say, it just doesn't sound fresh when I listen to it).

That’s what I’m saying jcole is not spectacular at all but he’s good
to me, J Cole and Big Sean are the two most mediocre rappers of their generation. I could care less, either way, tho. no cap
That shit was lame
He just mad cause mike ain't follow him lol
The Hiatus Kaiyote review still haunts me bc mans was trippin
It's legit one of the worst reviews he's ever done - absolute whack, crack and smack.
I feel like he's purposely going against the grain in this case. I think it's the only way
I feel like the biggest problem was that he wasn't reviewing the album at face value--instead assuming that the band was trying to go for a neo-soul sound, as opposed to blazing their own trail. Of course he's going to be disappointed when the album doesn't match his preconceived notion of what neo-soul should sound like.
That album is a treasure, he's completely wrong on it
The next person that tells me "I don't like Indian food" or "I don't like sushi" my answer will be "No, you're wrong".
Learning that Fantano doesn't like Snarky Puppy or Hiatus Kaiyote very much probably explains why I find myself disagreeing with his opinions so often lmao. Those two groups are pretty essential to my taste.
I'm still salty about Cherry Bomb getting a friggin 3
Me too😂
he just couldn’t understand the death grips influence 😤
I’m a Tyler STAN and that shit was actual ass
@@Madbro204 what made you dislike it so much
@@Madbro204 your just wrong
Damn smh melon forgot M83’s “Hurry Up We’re Dreaming,” Deftones “Ohms” and Mac Miller “Swimming.” We see you dodging Melon, we see you.
Tony mate, just saying ‘my most hated review is the friends we made along the way’ isn’t going to cut it I’m afraid
This would be a great series. If you do another, please address Carrie & Lowell, Because the Internet, Ultraviolence, and out of curiosity Yeezus.
Also his Y U No Review of Lucki
There are also a ton of reviews of records from particularly obscure artists that got below the 50:50 like ratio.
and cancer 4 cure
I was wondering where these are too. He talked about them last year in another video: My Worst Reviews.
Still don't think he'll change his opinions on most of them a year later but you never know
Maybe Salem's King Night too? As much as I agreed with that review, he kind of brought that backlash on himself for giving the foundation of an entire subculture such a low score.
Hey Anthony! I've noticed your content has had a weird focus around negative feedback recently, so I just wanted to say that I love you and your content! I know the internet can feel like a faceless mob, but you have a fanbase filled with people like me that love you for your perspective, articulation, and extensive knowledge of music and the industry. (not to mention your bubbly sense of humor).
Keep going strong, we love you!
NICE COMMENT!! SUPER EPIC!!
oh, that was so sweet
Very nice comment for someone who can be quite rude about food songs
❤❤
Also good to remember that a vast majority of viewers aren't posting comments or even rating the video. The people who get upset are a vocal minority when you really look at it. It's still important to listen to criticism but it's almost never as big of an angry crowd as it seems.
This is just 20 minutes of fantano saying: YEA I SAID IT
ahaha like the section
Deftones - Ohms
TOOL - Fear Inoculum
Royal Blood - Self-Titled
Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep of Reason
Don’t forget the rock and metal fans Smackthony Smacktano!
Tool's album wasn't that good, a lot of people didn't like it.
Fear inoculum was honestly dissapointing if I'm being honest, Ohms was fire tho
Don’t forget his Sempiternal review.
@@Utterlyderanged Yeah I honestly tend to agree also, but there was a bit of discourse with it so I put it there, lol.
@@ryanbollinger1759 Ha ha right, that album had a review, 4/10 is criminal IMO, but eh, I dunno.
How did he not bring up Neil Cicierega’s Mouth Dreams? That had people everywhere coming after him
Unfortunately, Mouth Dreams’s (currently) like and dislike ratio is 3.7k likes to 4.3k dislikes. Fantano went with the most disliked reviews by ratio, instead. Mouth Dreams will probably get featured in a sequel if it ever happens.
mouth dreams is only fun once
@@PakuTheMagnificent
mouth dreams is always fun wtf
Saba - care for me
and the Slowdive comeback record, it was actually pretty great. Not a 4/10 melon.
Saba. Yes.
Agreed
He's always harder on metal reviews than other genres I find
@@Palaecro He doesn't review it as much, but a negative metal review isn't as common
I can't call myself a true metal fan, as I find 99% of it to be rather shit. So my words don't hold a ton of weight admittedly. That being said, I enjoy some meshuggah. But that album was a bit of a dud to me as well.
I think a 2nd part would be cool with albums that you like where everyone else hated it (ie Lil Pump)
still shook from that Hobo Johnson 8/10
Came here to say Alex G!
Ohms by Deftones, my god you aimed for the target and hit the hostage on that one
Amen
Not trying to be facetious, I'm a Deftones fan, but what's so good about Ohms? I didn't hear anything on there that was much different to say, songs on Diamond Eyes.
@@JeromeBeckett You can feel how you want about Ohms, i'm criticising Fantano's review, he made some big mistakes in regards to the meaning of songs and some of the points he brought up didn't match the sound of the album
Deftones: Ohms, Koi no yokan. Both deserve another listen before you judge.
Though I don't think they're bad in any capacity, I really don't think they're as dense and creative as they're older albums. White pony and Deftones self titled album just really delivered
Ohms is ok. Koi No Yokan is their absolute best though.
He just doesn’t like Deftones
@@thenateyoulove I think Around the Fur deserves to be listed among their best. I also think Adrenaline, while not as polished as their later releases, is still a pretty solid album with a very raw, authentic energy too.
@@thenateyoulove I’d strongly disagree & say that Koi & Ohms are two of their most sonically dense work. The self titled was great but Frank was completely under the mix, but with Koi & Ohms he totally shines. It’s all about what you want to hear from them. I prefer the more atmospheric deftones over mostly heavy bangers
This needs an update for the Halsey review.
Me as a Hiatus Kaiyote fan: Ouch.
Me as a Snarky Puppy fan: *OUCH.*
Sylva in particular, calling what is probably their most mature and well-crafted album a college thesis. that stings
@@joelcoool No kidding! I'm still recovering.
@@joelcoool I get it though with Snarky Puppy. Yeah its immaculately produced music played by incredibly talented musicians, but man... it's so toothless. Bland. Milquetoast.
@@henryhill92 i mean obviously it's subjective but i really don't get that, it's so texturally diverse and they cover a super wide range of genres and moods.
i feel like sometimes people hear talented musicians and decide it must be boring or needlessly technical. i think they're incredibly tasteful and expressive in their music, and they have amazing chemistry
@@henryhill92 out of interest what snarky puppy tracks have you heard?
You gave swimming a 3/10, why Melon why
Edit: That one deserved to be talked about
Its kinda wierd hearing anthony say his own name
He's said his name so much waht
this video should be called "music critic being stubborn for 20 min straight"
Angry comments cant make him like anything. He's not being stubborn he just doesn't like something that he already said he doesn't like
He wasn’t saying his opinion was objective. He just feels a certain way on them
How is he being stubborn for not conforming to what other people think?
@@howler9171 he doesn’t respond to any real or fair cristism’s being given. He states a lot of his opinions as if their facts
@@derricknewman9238 At no point in time has he ever said that his opinions are fact and that people should never question him. In fact in this very video he THANKS his viewers for disagreeing with him and not just blindly following everything he says.
well... you should definitely do a part 2
I actually thought you were gonna talk about that Arctic Monkeys album. I don’t even like that album that much but damn it felt like an obvious pick lmaoo.
That album is fucking garbage... but yeah Fantano should’ve mentioned it at least.
Yeah at first I was shocked to see him hate on it so much. But then I actually heard it and yeah...
He said he felt like the instrumental serves only as a backdrop for Alex Turner to strike Elvis poses over in his Tranquility Base review. Although I liked the album I think that is my favourite Fantano comment of all time.
@@greatfelixo I was talkin bout AM
@@Garyee__ ah yeah thought so just remind me of this comment. But yeah that album didn't deserve to be slated as much as he slated it, still their worst album in my eyes though.
Swimming has to be here
Nope. He always hides from it.
My least favorite review of yours is the fact Gojira hasn't even been deserving a full album review to you
I’m surprised his reviews of Lana Del Reys earlier albums didn’t get more hate
I love „born to die“ but over the years I met many people who find Lanas earlier music too depressing/slow so I guess that’s why.
The hatred he has for Ultraviolence...I just don't understand????
@P Mosh *Lana, or her fans LOL
