- Senior UN Human Rights official Craig Mokhiber recently resigned over the organization's failure to address the brutal genocide in Gaza and Israel's apartheid policies against Palestinians. In this interview with Vijay Prashad, he talks about how the UN failed the people of Palestine over the decades and how the UN moved away from the principled norms-based approach rooted in international law when it came to the question of Palestine. Mokhiber explains the role played by countries such as the United States in this shift. He also says that hope lies in the massive demonstrations that are taking place across the world in solidarity with the people of Palestine and against the Israeli genocide.

Craig Mokhiber’s interview was enlightening
and highly informative. His descriptions from
personal experiences in defense of human
rights around the globe, as the U.N.s top
official in that area, put everything about the
current tragedy unfolding in Gaza, into
proper perspective! He is clearly man of great
integrity, honesty and human decency, to have
resigned from his position at the U.N., in protest
of the atrocities being committed by IDF against
Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and the U.N.s
inability to condemn the ongoing genocide.
Craig shows great courage by coming forward
and getting this narrative into the public sphere!
It is most unfortunate that so many top officials
at the United Nations today, are little more than
political hacks, only interested in furthering
their own careers. Dedicated servants of the
people like Craig Morkhiber are unfortunately
the exception at the U.N. , rather than the rule,
and have resulted in a loss of confidence in
the effectiveness and relevancy of the
organization. The fact that the U.N. was
able to find fault with other countries
committing grave human rights violations,
but never Israel, largely because of U.S
and European support, is a tragic legacy
for the organization, almost from its
inception. The beleaguered civilian
population of Palestine have been forced
to endure untold hardships and suffering
because of this. Perhaps Craig’s resignation
letter can open the eyes of the world, that
it is time to right the wrongs that the
Palestinian people in Gaza and West Bank
have been subjected to for far too long?

The UN is compromised by having its headquarters in the US. A move to a 'neutral' country like Switzerland might be a good idea. It is heartwarming to see individuals like Craig taking a principled stance, however.

Yes. The Un did focus on human rights and international law in the case of South Africa. But also African countries did stand by South Struggle by providing training, and arming ANC members of South Africa. Palestine is failed by its family members, Arabs failed Palestine.

Thank you for this outstanding interview... It gives me hope. I live in South Africa. I came in 1983 so saw the tail end of the Apartheid system. Being dark skinned, I experienced a small bit of the discrimination, but always had a "white" ID book to fall back on. Now, in the area that I live, no one really cares what race someone is. There is some reminates of an old Colonial mind-set, and as an expatriate, I still see South Africans as identifying by race first, but this is largely due to the Government policies that still use race as a means to implement policies and positions. I wish that wasn't the case as we have lost a lot of young talented people because they have no prospect of promotion because of their race.

Attended a demonstration today - its was 3/4 Arabs and 1/4 people of the Jewish faith - side by side, chanting the same chants.
Mr Mokhiber, in this interview, has said what most politicians and journalists have not dared to convey to their constituents and audience: the truth about our crooked, twisted, and false imagery of human rights around the world and here at home in the USA.

How can anyone realistically expect the two peoples to be able to live together with equal rights, given the history?
Why is 2 state solution impossible? Why can't settlements in occupied territories be forcibly removed?
2 states are a deception. Palestine is one country for jews, Muslims and Christians. How difficult is this to understand. The zionist state needs to be dissolved and the rights of the indigenous peoples of Palestine restored. Also you need to have a truth and reconciliation set up to expose the apartheid regimes evil.

@@Ec0ssaise555 what was the percentage natives and occupiers in S Africa? It was an apartheid state, but were they expelling indigenous population as well? Remember that there is a huge refugee population of Palestine waiting to come back to their country as well. It would be great if it works out but I find it unlikely.

I read Mr. Mokhiber's letter and it is unusual, in being a document emanating from a global multilateral organisation that looked honestly at a situation and told the truth. It is a shame that he had to resign in order to make the point publicly, our global institutions need more Craigs. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours

A man of honour, truth and conviction.
History has explained how the Europeans with dire need of proper food or water, reached the American continent and after settling there contended because of the richness of the soil & the native’s own way of life styles- how the new settlers treated the natives etc. the whole world knows. Hence taking an upper hand with all the plundered wealth the way Israelis behave ( after the harsh treatment they received from Hitler) towards the Palestinians who from the olden days put up or tolerated sympathetically has come to an end. Hereafter the Israelis Or Americans will not have their own arrogant making their own selfish agendas are Not going to help them, unless they come to their proper senses.
