It is because of the Jewish roots of the apostolic church.
Here are the Bible instructions for priests regarding hair:
Leviticus 21,5 Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies.
Leviticus 19,27 Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.
Ezekiel 44, 20 (a verse only for” the Levitical priests. the descendents of Zadok”, not for “the other levites”) They must not shave their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed.
Any here are other verses about different customs regarding hair (for all people, not just priests):
Numbers 6,5 During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor may be used on their head. They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the LORD is over; they must let their hair grow long.
Acts 18,18 Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken.
2 Samuel 15,26 (about Absalom) Whenever he cut the hair of his head-he used to cut his hair once a year because it became too heavy for him-he would weigh it, and its weight was two hundred shekels by the royal standard.

    • @jeremyhill9720
      @jeremyhill9720 5 місяців тому +8

@@PaliciCristinaYou are only half correct, all of those lines have to do with the fact that the priests being firstborn sons the families had to take the nazarite vow. Now that is a totally legit stance that Rabbi and many individuals take today, but Catholic and Orthodox priests do not take a nazarite vow, and obviously the Protestants don't because they don't believe in any tradition. So there is no biblical requirement for priests to have a beard or long hair, if there was the Roman Catholic Church would have already ruled it necessary for priests and clergy.

In primitive churches of the Anglo isles and Northern Europe many christian men cut their beards short or were completely shaven. This was in rejection of the pride that many of the barbarism races in which men had great pride in their beards and hair. We see that come to fruition in the Viking age where men could spend hours each day helping each other dye their hair and braid their beards. Men with short beards were made fun of. why do english people speak of barbers (barbarians)? If all orthodox men decided to grow all their facial hair without triming the edges or manicuring it they would not have the appealing look the west likes today. Many men would have scragly knarled face hair with crazy hairlines and bald spots. If the west saw the mangy, bald spots many men have in their beards they would think we are crazy since we didnt care about our outward appearance. Then we would truly Christian. @@oueb I don't go clean shaven, I just trim it down to maybe 2-3mm or something. That feels clean and comfortable, and I think it looks best on my face without risking ingrown hairs and looking like an actual baby. Whatever level of maintenance makes you feel comfortable in your own skin is what is right for you. I guess my point is that even the manliest men still take steps to affect how their body feels and is presented to the outside world, and I don't see it as a feminine practice. It is a human practice. Clean shaven looks a bit goofy to me, but I don't associate it with femininity. The male bikini waxing makes me slightly uncomfortable, but I think I would apply the same principles I described with facial hair.

The avoidance of vanity is sort of why I consider no trimming or clean shaven to both be valid traditions. It’s that middle ground where style and more importantly vanity can potentially start to creep in. The trends change over the centuries and there’ve been many long periods where certain looks were preferred in contemporary culture. Keep things simple but classy and you’ll do alright.

My understanding is long hair and beards were a hindrance in warrior cultures when men did a lot of hand to hand combat. Short hair and beards couldn't be grabbed, giving the attackers a better chance to clonk you over the head with an axe. Long hair and beards in men are akin to the long fingernails Chinese elites and scholars grew - it shows you don't do manual labor as the very long beards and hair could get caught in machinery or get full of muck and other disgusting stuff.

I can naturally relate to this, I hate having to care what my hair looks like. I like it better when I can just brush my hair and not be conserned with how my hair looks and then mess with it throughout the day. It's a sentiment that I was not taught as a kid, If my mom didn't give me haircuts, my hair would've been extremely long. I've always kept that sentiment, I'm trying to grow it out long to see if I would like it, but I"m not liking it so far and learning that I like my hair medium length.

    I find this topic fascinating.
First of all, I believe this to be a secondary concern and should not be the cause of anyone to lose faith in the primary message of the bible best summarised in John 3:16.
Here are pieces of scripture that comment on long hair and beards, I would love to hear if anyone else has more to share for or against as I want to grow in knowledge with all my brothers and sisters 🙏
    Leviticus 19:27
You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.
    1 Corinthians 11:14
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,
    Ezekiel 44:20
They shall not shave their heads or let their locks grow long; they shall surely trim the hair of their heads.
    Leviticus 21:5
They shall not make bald patches on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts on their body.

In Judaism a beard was pretty normal to have but in Roman history they removed body hair as did the ancient greeks but cultures are cultures it shows you what was difference from the east and west in many ways as the centuries past.
