I had my perfect day today. My daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren are here in Virginia from Massachusetts (750 miles). My grandson is eight and a delight. My granddaughter turned two in October. She has discovered while here that one of her favorite things to do is sit next to Grandpa and hold his hand - for as longas an hour! She looks at me, smiles with twinkling eyes and says, "Ampa." She'll get the rest of the word soon enough. And yes, my wife is "Amma." It just delighted my heart to have that sweet little soul next to me with that tiny hand enfolded in my rather large one. It does not get any better. It has been a glorious Christmas.

You sir, are a kindred spirit. Like you I retired early (at 57) and am still on a journey of self-improvement. I happened to be journaling on the exact topic of this video last night by asking myself what would my perfect day be like, and what would a perfect week be like? I concluded my perfect day - which already happens nearly every day because I organize it that way - includes walking the dogs for several miles with my wife in the morning and evening for exercise, cooking a healthy breakfast, tackling and completing a task I have pre-planned for that day which might include a trip to the gym coupled with an errand or two, interior home cleaning or repair, yard work, car maintenance, or participating in some sort of activity with family or friends. My perfect week is more of the same except I try to dedicate most of each day to a specific type of activity so everything is accomplished that is important to me and my family. Sunday is a family day that usually includes some sort of recreational activity and the day when I typically grill our dinner. Monday is a gym day. Tuesday is car maintenance day when I wash cars or perform light repairs and maintenance ( I own four older Jaguars). Wednesday is gym day and family night out for dinner. Thursday is house cleaning day. Friday is an outdoor / yard day followed by a happy hour at home and a light meal. Saturday is the Lord's day and my time to get cleaned up and dressed properly for church, which we attend in the early evening. This a good day to shine shoes and get some ironing done. After church my wife and I enjoy a dinner out at our club or a nice restaurant. We eat a clean diet as you do and am happy to say I am in very good health at 65 years of age and am at what I consider to be my ideal weight of 155 pounds. Reading is also part of my perfect day. I typically read two or three chapters from my King James Bible in the morning and then have a brief chat with the man upstairs before walking the dogs. At lunchtime, I will read for an hour or so - typically non-fiction such as history, philosophy or biography. In the evening I journal on what I have accomplished that day, clean up my email and review my finances. My wife and I like to watch a detective show or a classic movie before bed. Thankfully, my wife is also task-oriented, enjoys exercise and prepares healthy meals for us. She is a real treasure. We both believe time is what you make of it. Thank you for your excellent channel. My wife enjoys it too.

Ash, the evening you described in your Patreon video is my Wednesday evening with my lovely wife and two teenage kids. I am 54. I cook dinner and enjoy sitting down on a night when we can all be around the table to talk about how our day was with each other. We then go to our family room to watch some type of comedy sitcom or an adventure movie for about an hour and then everyone breaks away to do their own thing. To me...I cherish those nights.

I began Taekwondo in July of 2017. During lockdown, the ability to have a physical activity to do was critical for mental and physical health. Ever sense then, running through each of the forms I have committed to memory everyday has proven of such great value even on, perhaps especially on, the days where I am ill or in a bit of social or mental funk.

Great video Ash, men have an instinct to build and create so I think the ‘meaningful activity” you mentioned is as a result of that.

Looking great in the reefer Ash. Self development and benefiting others each day is essential. Some sort of creative pursuit is also necessary. Win the lottery, live humbley and become a philanthropist. Keep working, setting new goals and reinventing yourself.
    Happy New Year Ash!
    You're a fine chap.

Interesting video. I’m also in my early 40s, two young kids and feeling my advancing years carrying an extra 20 or so KG. Need to change something for sure. I’m thinking clean eating and regular exercise might be the way forward. To be become more energised would be great and just feel healthier in general.

I am usually up quite early, because I like to see the sun rise, whether in the summer or the winter months. At this time of year, I will build a fire in the fire place in our den, water the flowers and plants, and tidy up the kitchen from the night before while brewing up a cup of fresh ground coffee in my French press, and then sit down to watch The Chap's Guide and other favourite news and information programs on my laptop, in front of a roaring fire.
After shaving and washing up, I'll get dressed and go out for my morning's walk, which takes about one hour. (It's a delight to walk down main street in my little town, greeting the local merchants and members of the community who, like me, are out for a morning walk, or a trip to the grocery store.) On my way home, I will stop in at a local coffee shop where I will spend an hour or so chatting with a small group of male friends who meet here, about five days of the week.
By the time I return home, it's usually about noon, and my wife will have lunch prepared and a variety of news and information programs lined up to watch as we consume our afternoon meal.
By two in the afternoon, it's naptime, and we crawl into bed to luxuriate in the quiet and warmth of sheets and pillows and blankets for about two hours.
In the late afternoon, I will replenish the wood stacked beside the fireplace in our den by venturing outside to the woodshed, and then settle in for a couple of hours of sitting on the couch and either reading a book, or listening to music, or both.
A light dinner is usually accompanied by an hour or two of television watching, after which my wife and I will turn in for the evening. I often will read in bed until my head drops and the book falls out of my hand.
It's a quiet day, without a great deal of activity or stress. But after teaching high school for thirty years, I crave quiet and something approaching solitude. -Just knowing I don't have lessons to prepare or essays and projects to mark, and that my time is finally my own after decades of working hours that meant I was really labouring for not much more than minimum wage, makes me feel quite contented.

Ash, now that I am retired it is a little harder to fill time. But on the better side I am able to spend more time with my wife. I also have been able to read more but still not as much as I would like. We always need to have things to work on and improve ourselves. I am always a work in progress. A perfect day would be reading in the morning after a brisk walk. Participating in a favorite hobby with friends. Dinner at the table with my wife. And ending the day with a fire and a chat with good friends or the wife. Cheers Ron

Do you set an alarm clock to awake at 6am in the morning or do you naturally wake up at the time?

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  Рік тому +1

I naturally wake at about 5:30am and rise from my bed at 6am. I rarely sleep beyond 6am after all these years of routine. In fact, I find it hard to sleep longer even when on holiday. Hard habit to shake.

9:12 She's beautiful. 😻 What a good life she has. She is however correctly described as a tabby and white DSH rather than just as a tabby. Most of my cats are tabby and white. I don't trust anyone who doesn't like cats but automatic respect for anyone who spoils their animals rotten, especially that most beguiling creature; the maligned and misunderstood beautiful cat. 👍🏻

Its very surprising that you are able to enjoy life even by following the simplest things ... that says a lot about you ... I claim to my wife that I am too a simple person yet I cramp lot of things to my perfect day ( morning walk , reading books , going out with family , drawing some pictures , playing my favourite drum kit to my favourite songs , doing bit fo software coding ) only to get tired by the end of the day and yet feeling I need more time to enjoy the day ... maybe I am lacking something and need to wait to start enjoying life more in a simple way

You refer to your son as a perfect example. Take some advice from an old grandpa, with Severn grandchildren, now in their 20's. He will rebel at some point soon. He will reject all your values and probably do exactly the reverse.
I am probably 30/40 years older than you ' seen it all '.
