The Battle of Savo Island (aka Iron B Bay) is an incredible story, & shows that the Allies had -- to put it mildly -- quite a bit to learn from the IJN. The story of the communications muck-up is an epic tale of military blundering. The IJN at this time was just superbly trained ... for example, a Japanese carrier could launch a full strike in a little over 20 minutes; I've read that -- at Midway -- the Hornet took an hour to do the same, and even then most of their planes flew off in the wrong direction. Great post: thanks.

At this time, Japan had more practice. They had been at war in China for 7 years.
Plus bureaucrats didn't see the need in wasting money on drills, when the US was an isolationist country at the time. That is also why our torpedoes were useless at the beginning of the war.

@@StacyBaldwin-qv5cj My God! What was it? The Mark 14 torpedo? How many Yankee submariners died because their torpedoes would miss, hit but fail to explode, or circle back and sink themselves? A truly tragic story.

@@Laurencemardon the point I was making good sir, is they weren't better trained, they had more experience. There is a difference.

This book gets a lot of facts incorrect but I just wanted to note that a lot of people signed up for the Marines because I thought it'd be easier to fight the Japanese than the Nazis... close call but I believe I would have rather fought in Europe

Not to mention the stormed islands that they could have left to rot on the vine and let the people starve rather than having Marines killed to take the islands

actually the problem was at many levels. The Combined Staff of US and British officers put unreasonable demands compared to the forces they supplied for the tasks
Ghormley was a good officer but not suited for that duty.
If you really wand to know the complete story read Richard Franks Guadalcanal; published after all the documents were either declassified on the US side and translated on the Japanese side.
