not saying this is proof enough to confirm anything at all about the "Andraste is Mythal" theory...but I do find it interesting that a few items with their namesake share similar abilities and buffs. Item examples: Andraste's Ashes, Andraste's Grace (DA2 Ring), Mythal's Blessing (DAO shield), Mythal's Favor (DA2 grenade)

On the mage thing, I get why it's Blasphemous in Southern Thedas, given their general attitude about mages but I always kinda thought "why not both?" There really isn't a reason she can't be both a Mage AND the Bride of the Maker. It kinda makes her "Magic exists to serve man, never to rule over him" a little odd, but you COULD make the argument she was never a direct ruler herself, that was Maferath and Shartan and her other supporters, she herself was always a spiritual leader. An academic distinction maybe but it still matters from a doctrine standpoint. It also just makes sense to me that she would be a mage - the raw power of creation and the natural world at her fingertips, like the Maker himself? One of His children who doesn't abuse the gift He gave them and in fact uses it to free everyone else from those who do? That makes sense.
    On another note though -
I have always liked the idea that Haliserre was the OGB, and that after the mysterious event in the woods that led to her death, Andraste took Dumat into herself (probably unwillingly but who knows). The theory works a lot more cleanly that way. She did apparently meet the Maker in the woods after all. This way, Andraste's actual birth date/location doesn't matter as much, the question of her tainted parents doesn't matter, and it explains some of the weird stuff about her:
We know that her health was pretty shattered after that event - maybe just pneumonia wrecked her lungs or something, but it could also be that she was the subject of a magical ritual, which we know can be pretty brutal on the body - take Fenris and his lyrium tattoos for example. I think this would be especially true in this case since I somehow doubt magic soul surgery is a clean and painless process.
She has a pretty sudden shift in personality after that event too - maybe her brush with death changed her, that could certainly be the case, but maybe it's Dumat whispering in her ear. Kieran is definitely... off whenever you talk to him. As said in the video he knows too much about places and people for a 10-year-old, plus some of the stuff he comes out with is not just something he could learn by reading mommy's books or listening in at court - the lines about the titans or Qunari blood for example. He reminds me of Cole in that way - Cole can see into minds and memories, and read feelings. Kieran is like that but a bit different and he feels like.... MORE you know? A bigger and deeper presence than the spirit in Cole could ever hope to be.
Hearing bells and voices - a lot of explanations for this one. maybe the maker sure, or if she's a mage, demons tempting her or something, even good old-fashioned schizophrenia. Or maybe it's Dumat again, and maybe she can hear the other old gods. The calling has always been described as a beautiful song.
Natural Disasters - Powerful magic and luck, enough said. Probably some fallout from nearly 200 years of Teventer's total war with the darkspawn as well, I feel like you can't rip reality apart with abandon for that long and not have consequences. Maybe all that magic getting thrown around built up and burst the dam as it were, causing the storms and such. if nothing else, I'd imagine that long-term manipulation of the weather might have some fallout as well, and those systems don't move fast.

I think the hero of the Third Blight might have been the one to discover the method of surviving the killing of an archdemon. The unique axe Cleave in DAI says it was used by the Hero of the Third Blight, a dwarven man named Loris, and he gave the axe to his nephew before going on his Calling. If we assume that “Hero of the Nth Blight” is the title given to whomever killed the Archdemon, this means he survived long enough to later go on his Calling rather than die on the spot.
Unless “Hero of the Blight” is a more generic title that can be given to anyone who performed great deeds during a Blight?

    • @MetalKara
      @MetalKara 3 роки тому +5

Well, your warden always get this title whether he killed the archdemon, or Alistair/Loghain did. So I think its not always only the title of the person who did it.

@@MetalKara Oh that’s a fair point. My Warden is always the one to do the killing blow, so I forgot that was an option. Even so, when Leliana is announced at the Winter Palace, she is given the title “Veteran of the Fifth Blight,” so the title of “Hero of the Blight” seems a bit ambiguous it seems, and it could be an editing issue. I want to say Garahel is titled with Hero of the Fourth Blight, so that’s where I based my assumption. 😅

I'm not firm enough in the lore department to come up with a real "theory" that aptly covers this, but I do feel that the Jaws of Hakkon DLC was kind of trying to give us a hint about Andraste. Idk. A powerful spirit bound to a dragon (DAO "reborn Andraste" anyone?) in a ritual done by the Avvar (who were once part of the Alamarri) which involves singing (Andraste and her singing for the Maker?). Maybe Andraste was a vessel for the Maker, who is a god-like spirit like Hakkon Wintersbreath? And maybe when she died it was transferred to the Dragon? i mean it would mean that the Warden kind of killed the Maker but then again Inky killed Hakkon so it's not that much of a stretch. Just some random thoughts

The more holes are put in human cultural traditions the more they make it known or implied elves were at play, and honestly I'm sick and tired of elves being at the heart of every single lore point.
      The fade? Elves.
      Black city? Elves.
      Blight? Elves.
      Rise of Tevinter? Elves.
      Avvar gods? Elves.
      Temple of Andraste? Elves.
      Collapse of dwarf society? Elves.
      Corypheus? Elves.

Way too many elves in way too many plot points.

i personally like the idea that andraste was a powerful dreamer mage and i think that explains quite a bit about her life, including how she managed to get lucky enough for an elven slave rebellion right when she needed it: she could communicate with others in their dreams too.
tangential but i have always thought that the maker was just an extremely powerful spirit of creation. and while i have very little in universe evidence, i actually do think that the evanuris usurped the actual elven gods, similar to say pharaohs irl who called themselves X gods incarnate but were obviously not. the evanuris had other names once, long ago, maybe they were even high priests of the actual elven gods. it would make all the tevinter parallels with ancient arlathan slot better/feel neater imo. corypheus was also a high priest of dumat but when he found the throne of the black city empty, he decided to become a god in truth. maybe the evanuris was attempting something similar. i dunno, it just feels weird to me that the evanuris would use 'fen'harel' when creating propaganda against solas and not like his actual name which could mean a pride demon and could be very effectively wielded as such. it feels like there has to be existing lore there in fen'harel for the evanuris to graft onto solas. having a fen'harel figure already exist might explain some of that.

I think the "Andraste is Mythal" theory the most interesting and believable. For the point of "why didn't Andraste survive like Flemeth?", for what we know/seen it take preparation for Flemeth to not be killed, maybe Mythal learned for Andraste's death and after she found Flemeth she made sure that there is always a piece of her, that is saved. It could also be, that it has to do with Flemeth's magic abilities, which Andraste didn't have.
The Make could then be, as you mention, just be a scam by Mythal to get the humans on her side.

    • @wos1223

Late reply I know but one interesting thing to note on that particular theory is that Mythal is known to the Dalish as the wife of Elgar'nan who is called "The Eldest of the Sun" and who supposedly cast the Sun down from the sky at some point in vengeance , only being convinced to return it to the sky after Mythal begged him to do so. That's an interesting connection given that the symbol of the Maker and the Chantry is a Sun.

I always had the thought that the old gods were keys to open the gate for the elven gods, and the old gods were sentient dragons that Solas trapped their minds in the fade.
I also believed that the bight was created by the slain titan as a way to spite the elven gods, mostly because it knew the elves wanted it's blood.

I think Andraste's story looks to be inspired by Jesus, in regards to a religion being founded in her name after her death. But during her life she resembles more of Joan of Arc, including hearing voices and being burned at the stake. With Joan it is speculated to have been epilepsy, but with Andraste (if we assume she was a mage) it might have been spirit possession since it would fit the magical world of Thedas better.

So I was rewatching this and I just had a thought. One of the main points against the OGB theory is neither of her parents were wardens or had the blight but... We know from Fiona that pregnacies seem to have some effect with curing the blight (now this could be because of Maric's blood but we don't know for certain that is a factor and even if it is perhaps the ritual would have a similar effect). So what if Andraste's mother was a warden and then the ritual was done with her and this in addition to saving the first warden's life and preserving the soul of Dumat also cured her of the blight then like Fiona she would probably have been cast out of the wardens because she couldn't fight them anymore.
This would explain why her mother was never known as a grey warden and why she was able to 'retire', the ritual when done with a blighted warden cures them of the blight, this open the way for that point against the theory to not be as applicable. now there are some holes as we don't know exactly what caused Fiona to be cured or if the ritual would have the same effect but it was something I thought about.
Not sure anyone will see this but I thought it was an interesting think to consider so I wanted to write it down.

My current theory on where Dumat went is Archon Hessarian (which means I will be expanding or discarding my theory as I play DA4). After Andraste died, he suddenly heard the voice of the maker and wrote a story where the Magisters were tricked by the old gods. Everyone decided this was just propoganda, not least because he had no way of knowing the events of that event, as he wasn't there. ...Except, if he had Dumat whispering in his ear, he technically was there...
Oh, and that story was called the Canticle of Silence.

I am a tad late to the party, but one theory I think may have a ironic twist is the the True gods of Thedas is the Dragons, and also that Andraste... is Andraste.
Deliberate statement aside, there has been a theory I have seen circling in the background of Dragon Age for a decade now, and it is how Dragons are inherently important to the story of Dragon Age, both in name, theme and just general world building. Examples include the ceremony to become a reaver is similar to that of the joining, the importance of the royal blood of Fereldan having 'dragons blood' and how it was important for Flemeth to encourage the awakening of sleeping dragons which kicked off the Dragon Age. In addition there have been theories on the idea that dragons were once greater than they are now, in they were more intelligent or more godlike as opposed to the creatures you hunt in game: with the Old Gods being the 'true Gods' before they were placed to sleep beneath the earth and forgotten... the Forgotten Ones. Indeed I have seen even grander theories stating that Thedas may just be the dreams of the dragons... though evidence for this is scant and I cannot find the original posts: though the ideas were shaky as is.
Thematically it would also be suitably macabre storytelling if throughout the games where dragons are presented as the 'ultimate challenge', and in truth you are killing the true gods of the world. And yet despite their alluded importance to each game they play very littlie role in the direct plot save for the Arch Demon in DA:O and the false arch demon in DA:I.
Still this barmy theory ties into two others, one of which is that Andraste is a Old God Baby, and that Andraste... is in fact the dragon you encounter at the temple Urn of Sacred Ashes. Neither one of these theories is my own, but tying them together the general gist is that Andraste was born one year following the first blight by Dumat, and Andraste prophercies were the whispered of the soul of Dumat, just like Kieran can hear the whispers and has portence of strange things no child should know. We also know Andraste is recorded to have been a odd child, which if you speak to Kieran lines up. Still the theory develops therefore that following her death Andraste would be reborn as a dragon, completing a metamorphosis from Old God to Human to Dragon. And maybe... just maybe the dragon Cultists spoke truthfully about how the ashes from the urn are a "remnant of her true form, and she cannot move on as long as they exist." As we know blood (or in this case carbonised prophet) contains power in the Dragon Age universe, with the urn containing real healing magic (even separated from all that lyrium). So would it not be even more macabre that in DA:O you slay the true Andraste in her dragon form, who was unable to become a true 'new-old' god due to her ties to her old life: and we didn't listen because it was told to us by a man who acts like a crazy deranged culprit! Still what may be most telling is in DA Keep, one of the options you can pick is if you killed the High Dragon at the Urn of Sacred Ashes... despite it never really coming up: it could be telling... or it could be just one line of dialogue.
I mean... the dragon cultists could also be crazy: and most likely are, but it would be funny if they are not.

Thank you so much for another wonderful chapter of theories, this time with an Andraste flavor! We all assume now that Andraste was a mage, as we learn that mages often become elevated to Gods. While I’m not a firm believer that andraste was possessed by Mythal, it’s interesting to think about that maybe Mythal/Andraste did try to free the Elves and was betrayed by humans (Maferath). So when Mythal finds Flemeth, they both understand ‘the hearts of man’ and that’s why Flemeth lurks in the shadows now. She knows what will happen if she tries to fight for the Elves.

Was it even possible for people to become tranquill before the veil went up? Since you couldn't really separate the magic from people and the world. I wonder if elves like Solas would be able to tell the difference of tranquills and non-mages in the beginning when he first woke up, maybe they would both just look like non magical shells that can only immitate feelings (that's my headcannon anyway)
If Solas were to bring down the veil would all the tranquils become super unstable mages surrounded by spirits/demons and would they even still bother possesing people if they can enter Thedas easily? Gonna be a lot of "Anders nukes" either way :/

According to humans the Maker is the one who held sway in the Golden City. When the Tevinter mages entered the Golden City it turned black. The Maker, the blight and the Magisters are connected through this theory.
According to Solas is there a Maker? He, himself, is a powerful mage, so can we assume all the Evanuris were also mages? Ifso then Solas and "his people" were like the Magisters. Before Solas separated the Fade from reality by creating the Veil, did his Elven, Elvhen, Arlathan "people" inhabit a Fade with a Golden City or with a Black City? Was there a blight in the time of Arlathan? I'm assuming that Arlathan was the time of the Evanuris and that the Evanuris included Fen Harel (Solas), Mythal (Flemeth), El Garnan (?), etcetera?
Was there a Golden City in Arlathan's time? Did it continue to exist after Solas created the Veil? Or did the Black City appear when Solas created the Veil?

Andraste basically being the same as Flemeth and “the Maker” being Mythal would be somewhat hilarious. Kind of ties in with the “Black City is Arlathan” and “the elves found/caused the blight” theories too.
Although, and this possibly pokes a hole in the theory, one has to wonder what an Andraste-Mythal’s agenda was then. Because what she did doesn’t really seem to fit with where Flemeth’s agenda seems to be heading now.

  • @BelieveIt1051
    @BelieveIt1051 3 роки тому

I would just point out that it's impossible for Andraste to have been a mage, and for the story to still make sense. The reason people followed her is because she told of the Maker as the one true god of their world, and this Maker responded to her in visible ways. So when Andraste fought the Imperium there were massive events like earthquakes, floods, fires, famines, etc., that wiped out Tevinter's forces. This all happened because a normal woman prayed for it. Any doubters would have suspected her as a mage by default and would have checked to see if this was the case by watching her. It is easy to confirm who is a mage and who is not. Magic is a visible effect, and Andraste must have shown NONE at all for people to believe she had a connection to the Maker, who was the true source of the miracles.
Also, Andraste could not have been carrying Mythal because she was betrayed and burned alive until Hessarian ran her through. Mythal would have prevented that, since she was betrayed herself.
I think BioWare first presented the Chantry's account of the Maker, the world's creation, the old gods, Andraste, and the like as historical fact in Origins through 2, and then in Inquisition they decided to make it more ambiguous. Now they might be going in a totally different direction with it to include more elvhen pantheon influence.

Believe it or not, pregnancies can happen unexpectedly and not be planned like Morrigan did. If the pregnant Warden was present at the death of the Old God, then she would have gotten the Old God's soul, like Morrigan did. I can easily believe in two wardens taking comfort with one another in the days leading up to the final battle.

It's more than just a pregnancy though. It does involved magic for an OGB. What that entails is unclear since they never planned for Dragon Age to become a franchise, but I doubt two wardens just stumbled into a magic ritual.

@@absollum What ritual? All I've heard is that when an Old God is slain, it heads toward the warden that slew it. That kills both of them. Secondly, she tells Alistair that he is going to have the time of his life. This strongly suggests to me that the ritual has nothing to do with the Old God, but simply to ensure the conception takes place. It's the Thedas' equivalent to Tantric yoga, if you like.

I really hope Andraste and Mythal has nothing to do with each other. Mythologies come from many different people and cultures. For all myth, legend, etc. to be boiled down into "Happened to the ancient elves!" would be pretty boring from a worldbuilding perspective and would make it look like other cultures in Thedas weren't capable of grand pantheons and legends on their own :S

I would really like the Andraste and the Maker story to be real but with the Maker more akin to the Titans in WoW not an omni present being but more an architect of the world. After the veil was put up and everything thrown out of wack he returned speaking through Andraste.

The Andraste story sounds to me like a retelling of the betrayal and murder of Mythal. So my theory is that the tale of Andraste is a human version of the events. Meaning Andraste IS Mythal, not a vessel for her like Flemeth.
The betrayal by her husband, the murder/burning, the elf general under her (Shartan, known as the Liberator and Solas, the Rebel Wolf) leading an elven slave rebellion at the same time as well as going mad with grief after witnessing Andraste/Mythal’s murder.
I mean, there is a literal tale that states Andraste once climbed to the peak of Mount Sundermount and stayed there for several days, and what is at the peak of the Mount if Sundermount?? A SHRINE OF MYTHAL. And the Mount was once an Ancient Elven city.
Also, every single statue depicting Andraste wears the same crown as Flemeth on her brow. AND With Skyhold being an old fortress of Fen’Harel’s, why would there be an ancient statue of Andraste there? It wouldn’t make sense, but you know what would make sense would be if that statue was a depiction of Mythal.
ALSO ALSO Tevinter is proven to practice Ancient Elven magic in DAI through roaming banter with Dorian and Solas, and their belief is that Andraste was a powerful mage (“one of us” he says)

"Andraste is Mythal" is basically my head-canon at this point. Mythal crawled to Flemeth through ages, so she might have had other hosts along the way. Andraste, Tyrdda Bright-Axe, maybe others.
But "Andraste is OGB" also speaks to me a lot. I feel like, if this one turns out to be true, it's going to be combined with the previous one in some way. Don't really know how, just a hunch.

I’ve always imagined that Mythal came to Andraste in the forest when her mage powers first showed themselves and came to her after she accidentally killed her sister. This accounts for the fact that the book says when she returned from the forest, she was a different person. Maybe it’s just ptsd but I always assumed she was different because now mythal was there aswell. Then she tried to take down the empire that enslaved her people ( The Elves) and that’s why Shartan (possibly Solas) followed her.

I think many like the Mythal is Andraste idea because of the shared symbolistic. The sun crown that are shown as sign of Andraste and Mythal at the same time, Shartan who looks at some pictures and even at some window mosaiks very much like Solas. Her being betrayed by someone they "trusted" (Maferath and Elgar'nan - I know we do not know how the relationship between Mythal and Elgar'nan was, but they were told to be married, and after he was one of the worst of the Evanuris... It would not be too far away from him betraying her), her fight for Justice and freedom for the slaves. And the power they still hold after they died.
Could it be that a story kind of repeated itself there? Right or wrong. I see why people believe into that theory.

Well I believed Sandal to be a Maker until Solas was revealed as the one who created the Veil.
    It was just a...feeling,nothing more.
Now if the Maker was indeed the one who created the Veil, then Solas is the Maker.
I believe Solas as Maker/Maker as Solas is one of the running theories.
Now what would be the implications about Andraste being a Mage in that case?
An Elven or perhaps even Dalish Mage at that?
Solas is disgusted by both the Dalish and Andrastians such as the Chantry.
I do not recall his opinion,if any about the Andraste herself if indeed she was indeed real and not just some made up myth to control and dominate the people more easily .
Perhaps Andraste was his friend/lover and is guarding Arlathan/Black/Golden city for him.
If she was indeed Flemeth and or Mythal ,did Solas just killed her off once and for all?
Unlike most,I was always under the impression that Flemeth/Mythal transferred her essence to Solas and not Solas...absorbing her soul without her approval.
Possibly possessing and controlling him, possibly just sharing.
    So many questions...

I hate the entire Andraste/Mythal theory. It makes no sense. A powerful elven mage picking a woman who is against magic and just running with it? Wouldn't she have snatched up some Tevinter Magister and run the empire instead?
