Ok a sonic robo blast 2 player here for one there's different styles of play standerd strafe and another id recommend strafe for keyboard and mouse plus you picked the hardest character to play as for beginners being sonic his thok is very powerful and those who don't understand his abilities and how to properly utilize them need to sit and practice to master them I don't mean to be harsh but the main thing is that the easy character is tails I would recommend playing as tails to get used to the physics then master sonic's thok later on and finally I would recommend a re-evaluation when you understand these factors it's a stellar game for those who understand the engine

Dev of Horizons here. Yeah a lot of the issues and bugs mentioned here are the aftermath of me rushing the hell out of the game in fear that if I pulled out of SAGE at the last minute I'd get a lot of hate (so basically I was in a lose-lose situation). I knew the game was too buggy and unfinished to be out there, but I pushed myself to the limit to *try* and get it in a playable state (fyi: I'm the only person working on the game, it's a one-man army).
In the end, I was really disappointed in myself with how it came out. Left my body absolutely disabled for like 3 days due to the extreme stress and overwork I put myself through, and let out a buggy mess of a game. Though even with all the hate and stuff, I kept an open mind and have been gathering as many opinions as I could to build a new document regarding the development for it, and we've recently restarted work on majority of the areas to hopefully fix and make the game as good as it can be
also you can rev the spindash by spamming A/space

Btw in the beta/ test level area if the previous build I liked getting a hang of sonics wall running but the controls seem a bit loose so on smaller wall run sections it’s a struggle to hold on in the previous build wall running sections where huge I think the wall running needs to be tighter for small wall running platforms or to make them larger bc sonic goes to fast to use the wall running

Hi, Falk here. Thanks for the shoutout! Would just like to point out I had an entire professional career between Sonic Before the Sequel (and its sequels, lol) and Sonic Mania which often gets overlooked- it's not as simple as "make fan game, hope SEGA notices". James, Pejman, Andy and myself did and still do a lot of retail soundtracks together. I worked on everything from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy and a whole slew of other Japanese games, to a few rhythm games, several Malaysian games (where I'm from), to anime like Made in Abyss, before shipping Sonic Mania with Tee Lopes.
I mention this because I'd like to give practical advice to folks hoping there's some kind of shortcut. There isn't one. Fan games are cool, but nothing beats actual industry experience with the accountability and triage that comes with getting a product over the finish line to ship, and that's honestly irreplaceable. Knowing the franchise inside out is a plus. On the other, knowing how to finish a project in time, within budget and without stepping on anyone's toes too much is mandatory. Get out there and make original games too!
On the flipside, if that's a little bit of a downer to hear, I do come bearing gifts in the form of officially acknowledging that I've included a few easter eggs from this fan project in the Sonic Symphony tour, of which I'm co-music directing. :V
Gotta respect my roots and all that

    Some SRB2 tips!
If you're playing with Keyboard + Mouse, I'd HIGHLY recommend switching the camera mode to "Manual" instead of "Automatic". With Manual Camera, the camera will ONLY move when you tell it to (which is ideal for mouse controls), and most importantly character abilities like Sonic's Speed Thok will ALWAYS go in the direction of the camera, NOT the direction of the character. This makes it WAY easier to aim the Speed Thok to go exactly where you want, and - with *practice* - it's possible to be incredibly precise and have it aid (rather than hurt) platforming. Though as a beginner, I'd say maybe only use the Speed Thok on straights when you're sure there isn't a bottomless pit nearby. Greenflower Zone Act 2 makes a fantastic practice ground, actually. (Act 1 is a little small.)
As for level design, the levels themselves are designed to be played through with Sonic in mind, and so if you end up skipping things as Tails/Knuckles/modded characters, you may end up unsure which way is forwards. Rings, springs and signposts will *generally* point the way, but sometimes it isn't so clear. (And, just so you know, the game's actually pretty great at NOT having softlocks - that pit you were in which you thought you had to fly out of? There was a button at the bottom of the goop, which raises the goop so Sonic can get out.)
If you manage to get your controller working (make sure to select which controller is "active" in the "Select Gamepad..." option in the menu), I would heavily recommend setting your "Jump" and "Spin" buttons to the bumpers (L/R) or triggers (zL/zR). This is so you can always have your thumb on the right analogue stick for camera control, and even makes "Manual" controls usable on a controller (though you might still want to go with "Automatic" - that one's personal preference). I have the game set up on my Steam Deck with these controls, and while I lose a *bit* of accuracy compared to KB+M (analogue sticks be how analogue sticks be), I still have far more control than I would in a game like, say, Sonic Adventure.

  • @zebulan1485
    @zebulan1485 Рік тому +101

Have you tried turning on "Orbital looking" in the SRB2 controls? That positions the camera center on Sonic, rather than on a point behind him. You might also consider switching to the OpenGL renderer to enable 3D models and enable vertical camera control (which doesn't work well with the Software renderer), which can help with depth perception and positioning.
I'd also recommend avoiding the use of the thok for most platforming. It's not intended to be used like an air dash. Basic jumps can take you a lot further than you might expect, and spindash jumps can be used for larger gaps. The thok is almost never applicable to jumping from one platform to another (at least not until you get really good at the game). For inexperienced players, it functions best as a way to pick up speed in hallways or to change direction quickly.

@@GrownUpMonke69 Weirdly enough, I don't truly get a handle on Sonic's momentum in SRB2 until I turned auto-brake *off*, thus forcing myself to figure out how much I needed to tap/hold backwards to avoid overshooting jumps and sliding off ledges. It's similar to what you have to learn in 2D Sonic, with one notable difference in that SRB2 has a somewhat odd mid-air acceleration curve, which can be seen most easily in the low-gravity sections of Egg Rock.
Notably, Sonic Team Junior has been working on another massive update to the game that will change the physics to be even more momentum-based (and presumably remove the weirdness with mid-air acceleration); alongside this, they're currently planning to remove the thok, since its mostly static speed doesn't work well with the new physics. However, they have yet to figure out what to replace the thok with, and it currently looks like the next major update is still a few years away.

Sonic Mania was a joint effort, the "fans" and Sonic Team/Sega themselves came together to do it, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon or PagodaWest Games didn't do it in the afternoons at home when they were bored and had free time.
Whitehead even worked before with Sega to create the port of Sonic 1, 2 and CD (the best versions of these games, even superior to the origins versions). He was more than just a fan, he was an already recognized member.
Stop using it as an excuse, Sonic Mania is wonderful, but it exists thanks to the collaboration of both parties. Also, do you think there are no fans within Sonic Team? ask yourself that.

On the SRB2 discussion, I got to disagree The level design does a great job of show casing each of the core 3's strengths and weaknesses that recontextualizes each stage for them in ways only really seen in 3K, The Advanced Trilogy and Most recently Mania.
Of course theres Sonic with the Thok, as you pointed out is incredible for Speed, but it's hard to master as a platforming tool, which is fine because...
Tails has his flight and its just as strong as the Thok, not as fast but it more than makes up with it with line's through stages Sonic can only dream of and of course the extra precision when platforming is huge until you can get uses to other characters.
Then there's Knuckles, sporting a worse jump that sometimes forces him into his very own sections of the stage just like 3K and Mania, where the level design can be built around his unique traits in climbing and Gliding.
However not to say that everyone is a home run, the unlockable characters are a mixed bag. Amy makes an appearance and takes the SRB2 formula to the extreme since without a spindash she often has to find other methods of going fast. My favorite example being Arid Canyon 1 where her speedrun route has her build up momentum before jumping, precisely hammer bouncing off an enemy which gives her a ton of height and mantaining her speed, Amy might not be the best character, but she's the best example of what SRB2 does.
Fang however is the other nospin and by far my least favorite character. His pop gun is terrible at doing really anything other than hitting bosses and his tail bounce, while it's his main source of speed, is dependent on the terrain in a way that's more frustrating than interesting unlike Amy or even the Spindash of the core 3. While Knuckles is harder than Sonic and especially tails, he can still be an enjoyable time, but Fang? He really needs a master to even be the slightest bit fun... At least he's probably my favorite character in Battlemod? Bullying other nospins with his gun is always fun.

It's probably the reason Metal Sonic is so fun, because it's.. interesting. And honestly, I can't think of anything interesting for him, and, the hover actually works with speed, instead of the characters mentioned. So, that kind of makes Metal Sonic want to go fast for the hover thing, and as well for the spike bursting, higher speed, and.. yeah. It's really small, but it's definitely effective.

That being said, I have to commend the passion and effort that goes into these because it is remarkable. While most aren’t better than the official games, some such as P06, TT 16-Bit, GT, Fallen Star, and the fan remasters of 1, 2, 3&K and CD are objectively better than most official games, I’d argue that from a mechanical POV, P06 is the best 3D Sonic by far, while 3&K Air is basically on the level of Mania, aka peak 2D Sonic.

Honestly SRB2 has an issue with it's default settings. The camera issues you pointed out are fixable by messing with the settings, particularly by enabling OpenGL, vertical look, and orbital look, and it's strange that they just haven't since it would prevent situations like 32:04 where the intended path forward is harder than it should be to find.
Also I find it really strange how they never made Sonic less floaty. His lack of vertical abilities makes him one of the worst base game characters to play as and mods of Sonics from other games (particularly Adventure Sonic) end up fitting in better with the level design as a result.
Also minor correction: the story isn't a follow up to Sonic 1, but rather the original Sonic Robo Blast

I love how the character easily lets you control how fast you go with the multi jumps and easy to land attacks, which helps a lot when there’s a bunch of enemies. Fr, Sonic Robo Blast 2 is my current favorite 3D Sonic fangame.... though I have no doubt getting to use a controller greatly increased my enjoyment of it. Losing one's way or getting bogged down by puzzles, I've found those are mainly an issue in one zone, Deep Sea.... and yet, I have a great time with that stage too! At least with my favorite routes. With how infamous water levels in Sonic games are, it's pretty stunning they made Sonic fun to control underwater in 3D, of all things. Most of the time, the routes feel layered much like the top, middle and bottom routes you'd expect in 2D, frequently intersecting to give you plenty of chances to change course if there's another route you prefer 'cause it fits your playstyle or you just think it's neat. What I love most about SRB2 is the pacing. The flow of the platforming and just running and jumping moment to moment is fantastic, and it's unbelievably satisfying to make huge leaps with the crazy hangtime only otherwise seen in 2D classic Sonic games (and now Sonic Frontiers.) Things are constantly happening, but not overwhelmingly so. It's like a song and dance. There's a rhythm. With the best Sonic games, it isn't enough to simply beat it. The goal is to LOOK COOL beating it, and SRB2 gives you that with level design and controls that compliment each other really well. There's just a biiiit of a learning curve, like with any Sonic controls that give you room to f*ck around.

For SRB2, I HIGHLY recommend trying to play in First Person mode if you're doing Mouse + Keyboard. It's my preferred way to play and the control becomes very smooth after playing for a few zones. Also it seems like you didn't change your sensitivity. You can change both your vertical and horizontal sensitivity allowing for incredibly precise camera controls, which can be found in Mouse Options. Try a lower sensitivity since you're struggling to move in a straight line. While in there, turn Mousemove off (Mousemove stops the character from moving forward with the mouse and instead only with a keyboard) and perhaps turn First-Person MouseLook off as well if you're really struggling (MouseLook stops you from looking up or down). While in settings, change Playstyle to Manual as that's intended for Mouse + Keyboard. Manual will stop the camera from automatically changing every time you move in a direction and gives you 100% control over the camera.
32:00 The game will never softlock you for playing with Sonic only. You're supposed to jump on those pistons into the goo, there's a button down there that will flood the area. There really isn't any "puzzle-solving" outside of this one button and Deep Sea Zone.
    Two quick pieces of advice:
Never Thok if you don't know the level design. It's like boosting in Sonic Unleashed, great if you know how to play the game, if you don't, you will fail.
Don't skip sections with a character's abilities (like Tail's flight) if you don't know the layout. The stages have multiple intended paths to the end, skipping a section and landing halfway though a platforming section means you will get lost.

Have you played Triple Trouble 16 Bit? Kinda thought that was a slam dunk to be in this video and I think it does Classic Sonic gameplay pretty much the best of any finished Classic fangame (Galactic is better, but just one zone ATM).
Also even though Encore and GT aren't as tightly designed as they could be, I think it benefits for nearly endless replay value. You aren't likely to get the same experience twice!
Semi-relatedly, one of the reasons I think Generations gets an edge over Colors and Unleashed is that I feel it's the boost game with the most stages that open up 3D level design a bit more, coming closer to Adventure 1. Not all the Modern stages really star in opening up 3D (Green Hill pretty much keeps you on rails for instance in the 3D parts), but the likes of Sky Sanctuary, Seaside Hill, the first half of City Escape, even some sections of Rooftop Run and the start of the otherwise disappointing Planet Wisp really give glimpses of how 3D boost design can also incorporate more path exploration.

as a diehard fan of srb2, your criticisms are all valid, but mostly for first-time players. i found myself thinking a lot of the same things when i initially played srb2, but because i stuck with it, i eventually found them to be non-issues or even upsides in a few cases
for the camera, the default mode is designed for use with controllers, but keyboard and mouse is how most long-time srb2 players do it. that's because you can switch the camera mode to manual in the settings, putting it almost entirely in your control. it's a bit more advanced than the standard one you used, which is why it isn't the default option, but once you get used to it it's far superior to the janky and disorienting standard camera
for the controls, they're something that can be irritating for a new player but become one of the game's most defining features once you get used to them. sonic's speed thok (airdash) isn't designed for platforming or combat - it's designed for speed. you press the button, you go fast. if you try to use it for platforming, you go fast off the edge of a platform to your doom. if you try to use it against a boss, you go fast off the edge of the arena. the speed thok is really good in its intended context, but outside of that you just have to get used to the game's weird momentum if you want to have an easier time with the platforming
the levels are confusing at first, but become a lot more navigable when you play them enough. techno hill zone act 2 was a nightmare on my first few playthroughs but it feels like home to me by now. if i could have my wedding in gfz1 i would, and if i could have my wedding be _with_ gfz1 that'd be even better
the puzzles i have no defense for lmao. even on repeat playthroughs they're busywork at best and deep sea zone gargoyles at worst, i have no clue what purpose they're meant to serve
pretty much everything about sonic robo blast 2 is difficult for beginners, but becomes an upside the more you replay it. and between the 6 characters playable in the main game, the endless character addons, the tricky controls, and the open levels, there's plenty to offer for those repeat playthroughs that keep players repeatedly coming back
tl;dr srb2 has a high barrier for entry, but if you stick with it the weird and frustrating parts become the highlights of the game

32:02 If the footage was an example, let me explain.
So, there are a LOT OF physics based gimmicks in this game. And this is probably the one which is most focused on physics. Basically, you first need to land on one of the two pillars. Then, when it starts going up and reaches a decent speed, you need to jump so you can gain a lot of height. Finally, you need to aim for the middle and fall in there. There is a button at the bottom which rises the chemicals, which rises you. The problem is, game doesn't tell or indicate this at all. I was also stuck when I was first going through this. But this and some of deep sea zone is like... The only puzzle-solving aspects.
Also I figured I'd mention, this is my favorite Sonic game OF ALL TIME. Mods included. This game is really really hard to get into, and even if not, you'll probably get motion sickness. But I didn't, and I liked the vanilla game, and I LOVED the mods. One thing to point out though, if you straight up didn't like or have fun with the vanilla game, no mod will save your experience. Adventure Sonic alters the gameplay too much, Modern Sonic is just overpowered and sucks. There are MUCH MUCH BETTER levels as mods than the vanilla levels, but that doesn't help when most people don't like the physics.

  • @SkyBlueFox1
    @SkyBlueFox1 Рік тому +1

Some other people have mentioned suggestions for having an easier time with SRB2, but for what it's worth - if you want an ideal new-player experience, but you also want to actually play as Sonic(tm), try out the Adventure Sonic mod. It has its own quirks for sure, but AdvSonic's moveset is so versatile that it gives you a lot more cushion for making mistakes, or (more importantly) recovering from mistakes. Combined with a controller and the "orbital looking" option someone else brought up, it's a fantastic primer.
In a lot of ways, I'd argue that mods are really the way to go in general for SRB2, for good and ill. The default characters are all fun enough, but their mechanics tend to feel kinda basic compared to modded characters. Default Sonic has the Thok and Spindash and that's it, while AdvSonic has the Spindash, Homing, Bounce, LS Dash, and so on.

The problem with Robo Blast 2 is that its issues are literally tied to the engine it uses; Doom Legacy. Doom Legacy is one of the earliest source ports of Doom's engine.
There weren't very many fan made engines at the time, at least none that were open source. The Retro Engine, BlitzSonic, Sonic Worlds, etc. wouldn't exist until years later, and outside of BlitzSonic, very few engines were 3D capable, but it was a massive resource hog, Doom Legacy was the only engine that was 3D capable available at the time, was light on resources, and was pretty customizable. Its camera issues stem from the fact the engine wasn't designed to be used for Sonic, and while you can customize the camera control somewhat, it will never be perfect.
These are the same problems any fan game using a open source engine will experience; inherent problems from an engine you did not create.
It's still a fun, if challenging campaign. Playing as Sonic alone is fully possible, but you will have to think about how to beat certain areas creatively; like the area in Techno Hill Act 2 where the machine with the two pistons is: you need to jump from the highest point of the piston onto the button under the chemicals to raise it and clear the level. Tricky, but quite doable.
If anyone who reads this comment finds version 2.2 difficult, they are working on 2.3 right now, but 2.2 is much easier than the version 2.0 I played originally back in 2009. That version is much more unforgiving.

I personally have to disagree on Sonic GT's level design if only for how it executes its idea versus other games that just plop Sonic in an open environment. I feel like as long as you follow the rings, you're bound to find your way but there's never really a point where you'll be horribly lost or not having fun because the game's just so much fun to mess with. It's genuinely the closest I've felt a 3D Sonic game has gotten to capturing that sense of flow from the classics with how easy it is to utilize Sonic's different moves. Stages in a way are like big playgrounds where getting to the goal is up to you. Do you want to explore, nab goodies and figure out means of getting to some ridiculously high points or do you want to blaze through the level at supersonic speeds? You have the option and it feels like the game actively encourages you to keep experimenting. Speed is crucial to the franchise for sure but I also feel the stages should keep me invested. Otherwise I could just play a racing game if I want constant thrills of blazing through everything.

30:24 there is a command that is built into the game that you can use cam_speed i think. if you use it and set it to max the camera doesn't do that weird lag behind thing (as to why its not on that by default is beyond me)

For the spindash in Horizons, were you holding the button or repeatedly tapping it? Because you gain more spead by repeatedly tapping Spindash.

In Srb2 ya can play as Amy and nack also known as fang and metal sonic ya can unlock them by beating some stages like the fang boss battle and Amy ya can unlock her by beating a level that you unlock by beating a special stage and metal by beating his race and boss fight too

really shows how badly Sega had dropped the ball on their own character. Why aren't they going to these developers to make official Sonic games like Sonic Mania?!!

Got a quick question, what was the song you used at 7:32 for the Sonic GT intro? I'm making a Sonic fan game myself, and I'd love to see if I could get the artist who made that song to make some music for it.

I agree that the srb2 physics are slippery. Its annoying when i have to race with metal and i just mostly fall in the lava and lose rings at the beginning

    • @JobiMorkos
      @JobiMorkos 11 місяців тому

Yeah no, I don't think "Slippery" is the best way you put it, It's slippery because of you thinking about going fast and not thinking about the eventual outcome like running and then forgetting there's a lava in front of you.

Well I disagree with some of your criticisms like the story, tree Palace, tornado stages and cars2 BS. I am glad you enjoyed the game....(sometimes)

Using motifs from Sonic games is one thing. I mean Tree Palace has that iconic Green Hill melody in the back. But Area 99 and the Cars 2 track literally sound identical that can't be a coincidence

This is going to be a big comment.
I want to touch on Sonic GT's level design. The levels are playgrounds for you to create your own routes with the openness. Perfect for speedrunners or style runners. Like this: ua-cam.com/video/r-s83rdQGxs/v-deo.html
The characters do kind of reflect this too. For example, Ray is slower than everyone else but his flight allows him to cut corners that others can't to make up for it. This kind of level design is also great for experimenting with the best ways to beat the races. Not to mention that kind of gameplay and level design combination flows perfectly with the Combo Star system that this game has.
I also wanted to mention Omens. You say the level design is inconsistent, but I'm not quite sure how that's a bad thing. One kind of level design for the whole game would be incredibly homogenized. For example, Chao Paradise is a casual jaunt through the beach and the aesthetic and layout reflect that. While Citadel of Lotus is a chaotic gauntlet to save the world. Tree Paradise can flow smoothly too once you learn the level.
Now about Shadow's levels. You could technically play them like Sonic, but your Chaos powers are integral to a lot of them. Aside from Moldy Jungle and United Railroad, switches aren't required. Even then, you can bypass slower parts of Moldy Jungle with Chaos Dash. Honestly, the best designed Shadow stage to me is G.U.N Arsenal because you might think it's a tutorial on hitting switches, but you don't have to hit a single one. Take a look: ua-cam.com/video/2U4ogH9YzZI/v-deo.html The team really knew what they were doing when they designed these.
One last thing, the level design makes even more sense when you consider that a lot of the game has parallels to the Ori series. Like the Gnarl chase being the sandworm section of Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and Tree Palace and Waterfall Chase being the Ginso tree section of Ori and the Blind Forest.
One last tidbit. Sonic After the Sequel. I'm shocked you said it's more of the same with worse level design. Worse how? I can see how it's maybe more platform heavy sometimes, but that's all. It dials up the spectacle and player engagement at the same time.
Great video and you have a new subscriber!

This all just boils down the personal preference at the end of the day. I just found ATS's level design to be very repetitive and boring. Same with the omens stuff. But that's just me.
