    Love my 500 F4 VR. Handhold it 99% of the time on a D800. The VR works a treat.

      I normally handhold a 300 2.8 but can't really do that for very prolonged periods of time

    Hi Jason, I just came across this video, and having owned this lens for 7 years, I can whole-heartily agree with everything you've said. I can't wait to put the 500 on my newly purchased D500 when the cooler weather rolls around. The St. Marks NWR in North Florida is my second home for birding and other wildlife. You should give it a try, or maybe you have?

    Most practical and honest review that I've seen. Thank you. I am considering this 500mm, but it will be a stretch financially. As an alternative, about $3K less, I am also considering the new Sigma 150 - 600mm. I "hear" that it is wicked sharp at the long end, but I am skeptical. It is also not as fast. Any thoughts on this new Sigma lens?

    Great review as always. You have some great equipment Jason. I will assume you are a full time photographer?

    Very well spoken with excellent points, thank you for the review. In the process of getting a 500 f/4 G lens myself. Any thoughts on how it pairs with the tc-14iii and do you use it primarily with a Wemberly? I was thinking about their side kick option. Thx for any feedback 🙏

    good stuff, congrats on the lens. I still like the 400mm as it has that 2.8 aperture, but I almost always end up using it with teleconverters. I use the old version, no VR. Buying used is the only option for me when it comes to this big glass. I also used to have the 500mm manual focus Nikon lens, and the focal lengths is really nice. If I had a chance to buy all over again it would be really hard to choose between 400mm or 500mm. thanks for the video.

    Jason, you mention how heavy that Nikon 500mm f4 AF-S lens is. Try my elderly Nikon 500mm f4 AF-I ( 1995 ) !!. It's about another 500 grams ( 1.1 lbs.) heavier. It also has a one piece lens hood.( steel ). I purchased that lens when I lived in Japan in the 90's. I have the TC14E ( great ), TC17E ( good) and TC20E ( MK1 model and not that good ) I also have a Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-S and Nikon 800mm f5.6 ( manual focus )

    Hi sir. I'm a beginner, i own a nikon d3200, and i love shooting birds.
    But i don't really have the right equipment. I was thinking about buying the 70-300mm, but now that i saw this…..
    What do you think would be best for my beginner camera? Thanks!

    Hello Jason, at the moment I'm being offered a previous version of this lenses (AF-S non-VR) at a good price but I'm skeptical about shooting it handheld at anything below 1/1000s. Would you recommend me getting it or saving a few more years to get the VR version? Thanks

      @JasonOdellPhoto  8 років тому +3

      +Juan David Fernández While the VR version is definitely better, I wouldn't consider hand-holding either of those lenses as a primary shooting strategy. Even with VR, the 500/4 is big and heavy, and the narrow angle of view makes target acquisition difficult when you're not supporting it with a monopod or tripod.

    Great video, I have made my mind up to go with the 500mm over the 600mm. Thanks for a great informative video..

      I'd strongly consider the 500mm f/5.6 PF lens. It's much lighter and very easy to hand-hold.

      @@JasonOdellPhoto Thanks for the advice but I have the 200-500 which is also F5.6, I just hope the prime will be slightly better and I can also use a 1.4TC with it..

      @highpeakbirds6685 Рік тому

      I’ve watched your comparison video of the 200-500 vs 500 F4 so many times 🤦‍♂️, justifying spending £2.5k for the marginal benefit is hard.. but a little bit better is still better 🤔..

    • @JasonOdellPhoto
      @JasonOdellPhoto  Рік тому

      @@highpeakbirds6685 Keep in mind that you can use the 500/5.6 PF hand-held. It's several lbs lighter than your 200-500mm, and significantly less expensive than the 500/4. The 500/4 will always require either a tripod with gimbal head or a monopod for best results. That's a lot of extra overhead, depending on how you shoot.

      I thought I’d finally settled on the F4 500mm over the 600mm and now you’ve added the 500pf to the mix 🤦‍♂️😂.. As I assume you’ve owned all three, purely on optics which would you consider the best. I happily currently carry the 200-500 6-7 miles a day..

    UnBoxing is always fun. Thanks for the explanation of all the buttons and features. Carole rented a 500mm F4 from BorrowLenses.com for a few days to see if she would like it. Worked out well. Then she bought it from Berger Brothers Camera and saved $300 with free shipping. Then I sold my non-VR 600mm f4 and got the 500mm f4 from Berger Brothers. If you need a little more reach it works well with the 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter. I don't understand why Nikon doesn't change their lens feet to the Arca-swiss style so you don't have to pay an extra large amount of money for the Arca-swiss foot.

      Thanks for the feedback. I definitely got the best price on this lens by going with Berger Brothers. $400 cheaper than B&H, and free shipping, too! I really think with the higher MP cameras that the 500mm is once again the best all-purpose wildlife lens, and I can't wait to use this one down in South Texas in May.

    Looking at picking this lens up used. Have you used at all on the Nikon z7? If so how is the autofocus speed? Was also looking at the sigma 500 f/4 but worried it won’t be as fast on the z7 as a Nikon f mount.

      Jason Odell oh nice! How much are you selling it for out of curiosity? I don’t think i have enough money for it yet, maybe in a few months. Have you used it with the z system at all? Ive been using the Nikon 200-500 for the past few years but am ready for an upgrade

      Jonathan Vail I literally exactly the same I’ve been using the nikon D500 with 200 to 500mm and think I’m ready for an upgrade
