Nice video, I had to watch since I sold my beloved 400mm f/2.8E FL to buy the 500mm f/4E FL. So seeing a comparison was surprising since not many people review these big lenses and the people who do, are not always daily users of said lenses. I’m a newspaper photographer or “photojournalist” who uses these almost everyday. I originally bought the 400FL since I’ve always been a 400mm f/2.8 guy, for sports and breaking news. The main reason I bought the 400FL in the first place and sold my perfectly good 400G VR, was weight savings! However, after the initial shock of 2lbs or 1kilo reduction in weight..wore off, I realized it was still a large and heavy lens. It was just too heavy to hand-hold for more than a couple minutes. So that’s why I sold the 400FL and bought a new 500FL. I thought I might be slightly disappointed in the image quality and I figured the 400FL would beat the 500FL. This was based on the previous G VR lenses, I tested the 500G and owned the 400G, and the 400G was noticeably better sharpness and overall IQ wise. Not the case with the 500FL, the 500FL is just as good as the 400FL if not better. So I found it interesting you also found the 500FL to be slightly better. I will however disagree with you on the handholding, but that’s subjective or based on human performance.
I don’t mean to sound like a “tough guy,” but I handhold the 500FL all of the time, often for an hour to two hours. Not up to my eye, for the whole time obviously, but partly over my shoulder and partly shooting. With the 500FL being so light, I often leave my monopod and tripod at home or in my car. I carry my 500FL and D5 or D850 on my shoulder with Nikon padded long lens strap that’s included, attached to peak design anchors. I don’t have any issues with doing this. Except for occasional sore shoulder afterwards! I guess since I used to handhold the heavier 400FL, and I’ve had heavy 400mm f/2.8 lenses for 20 years…I’m used to it. But the 500FL is so well balanced now that it feels lighter than it really is. It feels lighter than the 200-500mm, even though it’s not. So I do know it’s hand holdable, at least for me, I’m a strong guy, but I’m not a bodybuilder or anything. Anyways good review, as someone whose owned both of the lenses shown here, I agree with you almost 100%! Both are fabulous lenses, but if only have or have used the 400FL, you might mistakenly believe it’s better. At least IQ wise, I know I did think that myself, but now I know I was wrong. The 500FL is just as great as the 400FL, just as sharp, and there no longer is an IQ advantage to the 400mm f/2.8, like there used to be with the previous models. I highly recommend the 500FL.
I think the 500pf took a lot of the 500FL sales, but unless you absolutely need the 500pf for medical issues, and you can afford the 500FL, get it. There really is a few great reasons why the 500FL is worth the extra money. Not that the 500pf is bad in anyway, it’s not, it’s awesome, but its just not quite as impressive. The 500FL collects twice the amount of light over the 500pf, it’s autofocus is noticeably better on the D5/D6/D850/D500 and it’s autofocus is also better adapted with the FTZ on mirrorless. Having f/4 also means better AF with teleconverter’s and better bokeh or separation, etc. I’ve owned and or tested almost every Nikon and Canon super-tele prime and zoom. They’re all great, but the 500mm f/4E VR FL is the best lens I’ve ever used and I’m so happy I bought one. I was hesitant at first to sell my beloved 400FL, it was a fabulous lens. But I was pleasantly surprised to find the 500FL was even better, and much lighter.

Hi Patrick, this is such an epic comment! Thank you so much. The 500FL is my favorite. I think what would have helped me is your padded strap and the Peak Design anchors. Lugging both around was a pain. One on its own would be ok and like you say the 500FL would be fine handheld. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and if you ever want to turn that beast of a lens you own towards wildlife do let us know! Perhaps you would appreciate some time off traveling from your busy job. Cheers Murray

      Hello Patrick
I just bought a 500FL on the used market as a nice Christmas gift (to myself 😇).
I agree with every statement of yours 100%. I walk with the lens attached to a D850 all day and shoot handheld. I have exchanged the lensfoot with the reallyrightstuff LCF-18 foot. It has this QD hole and I attach a magpul ms4 QDM strap. This is a great combination to comfortably carry the weight and still being ready to shoot within a second 😃
      I love it ❤️

@@edbritelight7683 Congrats sorry I did not respond until now, lol. Thankfully the 500FL is still the top dog though, it’s MTF chart is better than the new 400mm f/2.8 S and 800mm PF lenses. Plus it’s still only 6.6 pounds and Nikon has no replacement in the roadmap so it should last many years to come. It works great with the Z9 and FTZ/II adapter as I already tried it on my friends Z9! I’m still using a D6 and D850 but I’m happy about it working so well on the Z9! The near perfect IQ or sharpness l, electronic aperture and low weight is what makes it still so relevant! I’m looking forward to using it with the Z9 or Z8 if Nikon ever releases a smaller Z9! Glad you found one!

Hahaha! Peter! Great to hear from you! Sorry the video has taken a while to come out! Just had so many thoughts and content to get into a "short" video! That 400 is a beast I was truly knackered after hauling it around all day! Thanks as always for the comment!
