An up-and-coming attorney takes on a case to sue the Catholic Church for discrimination against a young woman who desperately wants to become a priest. In a world where gender equality is a critical issue, the Church remains steeped in tradition. As the trial unfolds and divine authority is challenged, their lives become in danger as extremists plot to stop the heresy at any cost.

Created Equal has a plot that simply could not happen. A nun wishes to go to a Catholic seminary in order, ultimately, to become a priest. However, the Catholic Church and the popes have been adamant....men, alone, can become priests. So, the woman approaches a law firm in order to sue the Church into accepting her to the seminary because she is being discriminated against by not being allowed in the program. While I could see someone wanting to sue for this right, finding a law firm or a court willing to try tackling the issue in the United States is problematic, as this clearly violates the notion of religious freedom. Lawmakers and judges simply do not nor could they create religious doctrine. However, the filmmakers who made Created Equal have also managed, somehow, to make the story interesting and compelling.
Sister Batista (Edy Ganem) is an unhappy nun. She is feeling unfulfilled in this role and feels that God has called her to be the first Catholic female priest. This seemingly unwinnable case is given to a hot-shot lawyer known for always setting cases without taking them to court. Tom Reilly (Aaron Tveit) plans on convincing the Sister to drop the case or accept a cash settlement. After all, he seems like a cynical guy who is much more interested in making partner at the law firm than actually doing anything else. However, something unusual happens...over time, Sister Batista wins him over and convinces him that they might just be able to win the case. Up against them is a lawyer and priest (Lou Diamond Phillips) as well as a psycho intent on stopping her at any price.
The acting and direction in this film was pretty good...and that made a seemingly ludicrous story actually work. I also liked the local color given to the story by filming it around New Orleans. My only quibble, other than the basic idea, is the big confrontation scene with the would-be killer...it didn't quite work for me. But solid acting, tension and uniqueness make this an entertaining flick."

Great movie. I am a female ordinate in a reformed church but believe me it is still a 'battle', but God. By God's grace I serve His church with the gifts He has given me and the title doesn't matter. If God can use a donkey.... just saying. Be faithful in your calling, and learn to serve the Lord and His church without a title. That is freedom!
You're right, title doesn't matter. God's will exists nowhere else than in individual faith, and texts, all texts, are interpretations and only interpretations of this faith.

Going to biblical collège getting certificats in biblical studies are wonderful and degrees but no one needs a title to share the Gosbel when God sends you on a mission all doors he will open.preist, Evangelist, minister, Révérend, pastor must all be called by God anointed by God. He will tell you what if any your title will be. Such a good movie, which answers a lot of questions for me because a friend and I had a discussion about woman becoming pastors and her argument was the bible say referring to 1 Timothy 2:1-2. Now I have a better understanding.

But seems that Christ specifically commissioned his apostles & gave them authority over demons & such. They were all men. Then when reappearing to his apostles after his death, breathed on them & gave them authority to forgives sins & preach the Gospel. Then Paul says in 2 Tim. 2: 9
6 "For which cause I admonish thee, that thou stir up the grace of God which is in thee, by the imposition of my hands" ...so therefore commissioned by Paul's authority given to him by Peter (Cephas) . & in Galatians 2 ; 9: " And when they had known the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship: that we should go unto the Gentiles," so in affect commissioned as well So it was a calling but verified & authorized by a comission given by authority

Super movie showing that both men and women want to serve God and people. I will check with a Bible study group to get further clarification of the writings in the Bible regarding whether women can become priests. And then provide a conclusion to this debate.

It was stated several times during the movie that women can be priests. But not in the Catholic church. I think every Christian should know that every church has it's own personality.
One thing for sure....you can't go up against God and expect to win! That's for sure, that's referenced in Scripturel! The first one tried and look where he ended up!!! N0 women priests in God's Church, no one except God can change that! Obedience!!! Sad how many countless times we want to put our will over God's Will, like we're all that! Such arrogance ugh!
@@miamaria333 This case proved that there is no Scriptural justification for male priests only; the jury decided that the plaintiffs won the case. But there's still the issue of the male hierarchy of the church not wanting women priests. We all can see that the Pope is not God; that's been proven throughout history with all the corrupt Pope's the Roman church has had, and I emphasize Roman. Roman is not the same as catholic. Rome is corrupt.

First of all , brilliant performance by the lawyer Tom. Christ did not say that women could not be apostles In order to keep up with the culture of those times in that part of the world. But Mary Magdalene and his mother Mary and the other women around him were his apostles and perhaps were more faithful through out .
He did not reject women , he rejected women having the role as head of men.
Y'all need to look into what it is to be a priest .

The two Mary's were never apostles. The Virgin Mary was Christ's mother and as such had her own special role as Mother of Christ and Mother towards his apostles, definitely not the same role as an apostle. Mary Magdalene became a disciple along with many other men and women. The apostles were the chosen 12 and their role was a vocation to lead disciples and spread the good news and teaching the Gospel of the Lord, to the ends of the earth.

Some of Ali's answers during the trial had not much weight as far as I can see. It makes no sense for her to drag everyone through all this, she obviously doesn't believe in the Catholic teachings if she doesn't believe in the authority given to it to decide whether a woman can become a priest or not. So if she believes that then how can she trust that the church has the authority for making her a priest in the first place? Find a different religion then maybe.
And that argument that she was attacked & almost killed b/c she wanted to be a priest was not valid as the attacker was not on any way connected to the church but was a crazy person not able to reason rationally. The church has some extraordinary & inspiring writings from woman in the Catholic church who where named Doctors of the Church & are very much appreciated & valued

What a nice movie that everyone must watch. Great acting too from the cast especially in deliberation in the court trials. Both counsels were great defending their belief & stands same as the judge.The decision of the judge was correct but even the plaintiff won on this case still the Catholic church has the final decision whether they will accept women to enter the seminary to become a priest.
It only shows that our judicial system has no control over the Catholic church teachings & beliefs.
However she can still serve God even she will not become a priest.
I just smiled coz the counsel proved that he's a good lawyer even he was known for not defending any cases. 😊

Wonderful movie! A lot to say of course..., but what impressed me most (as a woman) was when she mentioned about Joan d'Arc - I had tears in my eyes. Born and raised in the eastern Europe (Romania) I never thought about any difference in value between women and men. I was very, very surprised to learn about this after crossing the ocean to the N. America - unbelievable!

Funny - the Roman Catholics accept married clergy from Anglican, Lutheran and Methodist traditions which makes those priests born and raised in the Catholic religion shake their heads. Might add the what many people call "Greek Catholics" ( not Orthodox ) allow priests to be married (not get married ) and they are a valid part of the Papacy! Some of the Apostles were also married. Anyway, they now have Communion services lead by women but the Host has been consecrated by a priest. Some of these concessions are being made because too few men want to go into the priesthood. Anyway--------just sayin'

Lutherans and other denominations do not believe in the Real Prescence. They would have to convert but still would not be a priest. Catholic Riests have at least 10 years of study and formation.

After watching th movie I now realize why it won th academy award. It's bcos its opposing th Holy Church. Those who join th Church of Christ inorder 2 change it 2 suit their misconcieved idiologies should 1st study th history of th Church so that they make educated decision whether 2 joint it or not. No one s forced 2 join th Catholic Church. There r so many other churches which ordain women. Or better still they can form their own church. Period!!!

Wrong. The judge was in error for not dismissing the case at the outset. All other arguments aside, the trial was an exercise in futility. No church can be compelled to ordain a priest. That is entirely outside any court's jurisdiction.

I hope Catholics aren't really this ignorant of the Bible. One of the main arguments of the defense was that the Bible doesn't say that women should not be Pastors/Priests i.e. leaders of the church, but 1 Timothy 2 12-14 spells it out pretty well.

The fanatic certainly worked on his own. However in the Inquisition they did not. Certainly there is a point to be made in non ordination of women based on Jesus ' choice of Apostles, some of whom were married men, however, he was not silent on involvement in warfare and politics. Consistency. A very thought provoking movie that could not possibly cover every aspect involved but nevertheless made good points where it could.

The Church has the right to choose who they want and politics should not interfere. Only the Pope has the authority to rule on women's behalf and not in the courts. If this is a true story, which I doubt, it should have never been brought to the court to determine one woman's desire to be a priest.
You must have missed the point that America is a nation of laws, and noone is above the law, not even a church. And the jury decided that the church was breaking the law by discriminating against women. You can choose to live in a nation that's not under law if you like, but it won't be the U.S.A.

This is crazy, I’m catholic, I’m a male and I see no harm in a woman wanting to become a priest. I believe a woman would make a great priest and probably better than some of the men who are already priests.
The priest is male because Jesus drained it to be so. He chose the first 12 priests and Priests act in persona Christi when they consecrate the sacraments. Women have other roles in the church but Jesus was male and we are all to quick to say oh...Jesus is wrong because that was then and this is now. Ridiculous! God had a plan and you don't adapt it for modern misguided and worldly theology. Jesus has worked over history through many powerful women but he created male priest.

The reason woman are not allowed to be priests is ... during their menstrual cycle they are considered unclean and not fit for the alter of God. Similarly, in Islam woman are not allowed in temple when they are having their period.

Catholicism has a dark side it preaches and only the priest's have the highest respect for these scriptures. King Charles 11 was nominated to be beheaded. Because he wanted to practice Catholicism. When society did not. There is also a movie of his escape during those times. He hid like a rat in the countryside and slums of England. This is the reason why Elizabeth 11 named her first born son Charles and bought back the Catholicism practice. It's a must watch.
She could go preach the gospel in a Protestant church. The gospel is the gospel. It’s perfect in its simplicity. The main thing is she would be reaching people with it.
