📚 Description: The Gibson Corvus and Futura are some strangely shaped guitars. They are often called the "can opener" or "Pacman guitar" but the shape is actually supposed to resemble a bird in flight - more specifically... a crow because Corvus is Latin for crow. Gibson's marketing team turned this once headless design into a laughing stock of a guitar.
Despite the odd shape - they are nice comfortable bedroom strummers with a pretty good tone. The neck heavy design doesnt' make them my favorite to stand with unless you're in a "power-rock" pose.

"Doofy looking" = cheap looking. Or, at the very least, NOT what you'd shop Gibson for. It brings to mind another brand's "travel" guitar. That design guy looks like a young Magnum PI. Thanks for explaining the design. That actually made sense. Too bad what was supposed to be a "headless" guitar, this baby ended up with one of Gibson's biggest. I love the bridge / tailpiece. It certainly didn't effect the sound any. I think if Gibson gave it straight Les Paul hardware, it would have had a better asking price and collector's value.

The story of the marketing people messing this up reminds me of a story from the mid 80s. Martyn Booth worked for Gibson based in the UK. He came up with the concept of putting a nice top on a S335 plus a trem and everyone who saw it loved it. Except Gibson's marketing people.
Come NAMM a bloke from Maryland launches his range and everyone falls in love with the PRS Custom. A double cutaway guitar with a nice top and a trem. Gibson were pushing a tweaked victory superstrat style thing.
Booth later made his concept with Yamaha (who themselves had turned PRS down in '83) and now makes a range of guitars under his own name. IMO his version of a one pickup DC special is the best you can get.

The reason there's a gap in the finish like that is because there's normally a piece of masking tape there that's finished over. I can't say if that's true for EVERY Corvus, but my silver Corvus 2 still has the tape in the exact same spot. Also, that bridge is the Schaller 455 and the brass saddles are actually just gold-plated.

Wow I haven't seen that Corvus ad since 10th grade. Yes he certainly is rocking out, in a budget kinda way. What a shame to not of been headless, and ahead of it's time.

What’s that music in the background around 5:30 in the vid? I like it, it’s very nice and kinda reminds me of a magical Christmas movie or something

I cut both the front horns off my Warlock along with a cut straight across the top to even with the back point, changed out the pickups to more of a Paf style for a travel guitar, looks just like it Lol.

I think these are great. Gibson has been making the exact same things with slight changes over and over for years. It's nice to see that they can make something out of the ordinary. They should do it more often. Like more serious metal axes, PLEASE!

The should have done a test run of headless bolt on necks versions. that way the could have done what they did anyway and used the headless necks for a later headless series of any shape. I suggest the square \ rectangle Bo Diddly but smaller with different types of tuners.
BTW those black plastic Lawrence pickups are very nice sounding.

Those cheap, rare-ish 90s red label, ibanez ex necks were one peice maple. They were so sweet....oh yeah, solid maple body too. The best mod platform. Check em out, like 1or200 bux, gut the thing, keep body and neck and put your parts on.

Ovation at the same time made a very similar looking guitar I can't remember what it was called but I remember in about 91 I worked in a little music shop and they had one it felt like a super heavy hunk of junk I'm sure it wasn't but that just my memory of it but yeah Ovation had a very similar body style and model of electric guitar

Corvus encompaces a range of birds from the Jack door to the Magpie, Crow, Ravens and Rooks, they are all Corvids and so are of the Corvus strain. I think their cool. I have a black 66 Trini Lopez for $4000 in extra super condition.

They could have put the bottom strap button at the crow's wing than the head. I have been interested in that kind of guitar since Guitar Hero. That guitar is easy to use that could have been part of the Designer series.

Remove upper strap button, tie strap to headstock like an acoustic. You wont look any weirded than you did to begin with... because it's a Corvus either way.

I remember these from then. Can Opener is my first thought (this makes the Moderne look like Marilyn Monroe).
ha, almost bought a Sonix back then in late '81. A flat black LP shape, bolt on made out of compressed wood chips with a funky pick guard.
Bought a Matsumoku built Aria Pro II Cardinal CS250 (had to look it up, long time ago). Loved it but it broke strings like crazy.
It was gone in a year. Who knows which would have been a better buy .

I think the way to get the best sounds out of a Corvus/Futura is to get in a car with your recording equipment get up to about 65/70 mph. Then throw it out the window and record the sound of it crashing on to the road
