It was their Super Hits Of The 70s series in the 90s that I loved the most, which generally focused on singles that, at the time, had not been available on CD. For 6 years they released 25 volumes and I immediately bought them as soon as they were released. They also had a Soul Hits Of The 70s series (20 volumes) around the same time that I would buy as well.

Loved this video, Matt. By the mid 70's finding albums by bands like the Yardbirds, Beau Brummels, Love and others was extremely difficult, if not impossible, so when Rhino appeared in the 80's with their compilations, it truly seemed like a gift from the Heavens for a guy like me. Thank you for your dedication to this great music, my friend.

I loved the Monkees outtakes Rhino unearthed but it left me wondering a bit why they chose some of the songs they did on the later original Monkees albums. I look forward to the profile on The Monkees, I was someone who as a kid watched the reruns in the late 80's. I saw them on Much Music which was for many years Canada's answer to MTV and VH-1.

Back in the 1980s, many 1960s bands that weren't on major labels album catalogs became out of print. Rhino reissued those hard-to-find great albums such as the Turtles, the Nazz, Easybeats, the Monkees, as well as their own Nuggets & Dr. Demento series. What a fun and essential label for a teenage record collector like me back then. What a fun and nostalgic presentation!

Another great video, Matt. After I graduated HS and got my first real job in '84, I'd hit the Crow's Nest record store and get at least one Rhino LP a month. The Best of the Music Machine album is excellent too. Around that same time, I'd flip through the store's giant catalog and special order a lot of the Bam Caruso compilation LPs from the UK. I enjoyed those even more because at the time, those obscure UK 45s were impossible to find in the US.

Thanks for calling attention to Rhino.
I do want to mention their amazing series The History of British Rock, Volume 1-9, featuring music from 1962-1970. Fantastic sound & mastering, incredible selections, 20 tracks on each CD.
Somehow, they were able to license all of the great songs from the sixties (except for some of the big boys: no Who, no Stones, no Beatles except for the pre-mania German singles). Of course, each CD has an informative booklet and great pics.
The Rhino folks simply loved the music, as well as the IDEA of the music.
I'd be fascinated to hear you discuss David Bowie's absolute FAILURE of a career in the early sixties before Space Oddity changed his life, and most of those early singles were excellent (well, some were pretty cheesy!), and his 1967 album (released the same day as Sgt. Pepper - whoops) has some very good songs. His story to musicians is to NEVER give up.

Matt, I share your enthusiam for Rhino.
Rhino has saved much wonderful music from being relegated to the dustbins of history.
I share your love of the Association. They were certainly not hip back in the day, but there is a quality and an elegance to their music that shines on
    .
Mark-Almond`s Greatest Hits is a godsend from Rhino. Jazz-Folk at it`s best, Jon Mark (vocals, guitar) Johnny Almond (sax, flute) this is a semi-forgotten group that had a unique, hip sound, great tunes, first-class musicians (Mark and Almond both played on the influential John Mayall album The Turning Point) and the result is exceptional.
God bless Rhino (if it ain`t out of keeping with the situation«)

He was an enigmatic figure Mr. Mark.
At the time that Rhino released the Mark-Almond compilation - which I highly recommend - his whereabouts were unknown and he was even rumoured to have died.
Actually, he had moved to New Zealand, and begun creating some fantastic ambient music. His recordings are very beautiful, very Zen..
He even won a Grammy Award with his wife Thelma Burchell for their recordings of Tibetan monk chants.
A superior musician who never stopped seeking his next sound. A spiritual seeker.
His album The Standing Stones of Callanish is peace and tranquility incarnate.

Regarding the Monkees: 1. Both Missing Links and the Listen To The Band set have one of my two favorite Monkees songs of all time, Nine Times Blue. When I first heard it, I thought it was just a standard country song, but then something about it stuck with me. My other favorite is also one of yours, Porpoise Song. I count it as one of my top-10 psychedelic songs, along with the song I mentioned in my other post, the Turtles' To See the Sun. 2. I interviewed Micky Dolenz once, and I remarked to him, thanks to Rhino and Andrew Sandoval, the Monkees' legacy was getting better treatment than the Beatles in terms of deep dives into their archives. Of course, that changed with the later Beatles Super Deluxe boxes.

I bought Nuggetts 2 randomly when I was 13. it was just after my mother died and discovering this music, looking back, saved my soul just when i needed it. Nuggetts 1 and 2., best of the Music Machine also. In the eighties. Edsel put out some great stuff. I loved See For Miles with all their UK stuff. British Psych Trip Vol2 was one i bought randomly at the same time as Nuggetts 2. Family's Music from a Doll's House. i recently bought their Zombies coolection of A and B sides, thanks to your video I discovered how much i like this group, every song is fantastic. I missed them for over 30 years until I watched their Pop goes the 60's bio! Thanks Matt. i wish that I could I could show my appreciation by sending you some money but I don't have much myself and I am already supporting a couple of good friends who have big financial problems at the moment. I completely agree, sounds like we travelled the same musical journey. I had an older brother that bought records as we were teens in the eighties. I remember when picked up Nuggets Vol 1, the Hits. I disregarded the liner notes and thought they were all current bands. My mind was blown away! I'd watch MTV in hopes they would play the Seeds or Electric Prunes, it's funny now to think about it, but true. Eventually I started buying records, and those Rhino comps were my first purchases. Best of the Yardbirds, Beau Brummels, Bobby Fuller, Love, y'know. They were priced fairly, the liners where top notch and I felt I always got the best for the buck. Then of course I started buying comps from Charly and the others you mentioned, plus the Eva label from France was really good!

What a great episode. Rhino was a real godsend at a time when it looked like so much of the sixties would be lost or else put out cheaply on K-Tel. Rhino began as a record store in West Hollywood, then the music heads who owned it decided to not only put out records, but give them superb engineering and excellent liner notes with rare pictures. That was really important, because in the 60s no one knew much about these performers, often not even what they looked like because it was a radio world. A city had one or two Top 40 stations and TV appearances were rare. Album notes were all fluff written by promo men and unlike Britain, we had no serious rock press until 1968 or '69. Warner Brothers bought Rhino in 1992. Some fans said the sound quality slipped but I don't hear it. Their true successor was Bob Irwin's Sundazed Records and there are currently some great British labels making super high quality CDs of 60s material. How I'd love to comment on all these groups... Do cover groups like Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Herman's Hermits, etc. Many "less than hip" performers are skipped and this distorts the music history, which becomes a history of what was hip instead of a true picture of the times. If you ever do the New Colony Six I hope you include heir biggest Chicago competitors, the Cryan' Shames, a sorely undervalued band.

Great presentation Matt of your Rhino record collection👍As a teenager growing up in 80's and getting heavily into 60's music, Rhino was a Godsend, if it wasnt for Rhino many of us would have never heard many of these bands.for example all the music I ever had from The Monkees where recorded on Sony cassette tapes from my uncle's record collection, so as soon as I discovered The Monkees being released on Rhino I got ALL of their albums!!! So along with the Monkees this led me into other 60's bands such as Love- The Best Of Love (1986) Blue Cheer-Louder Than God, The Turtles, The Left Banke, The Blues Magoos, The Choclate Watch Band, and of course the Grand Daddy of them all- The Nuggets Albums-and I bought everything I could get my hands on!!! And so began the many Pilgrimages from the suburbs to Tower Records in San Francisco on Columbus and Bay, and Rasputin Records on Telegraph in Berkeley where I would hunt down All these albums. It was a Great time to be a teenager discovering all this music. The last thing I bought from Rhino were The Nuggets Box Set (on CD) Orginal Artyfacts From The Psychedelic Era 1965-1968, Artyfacts From The British Empire And Beyond, Los Angeles Nuggets- Where The Action Is, San Francisco Nuggets-Love Is The Song We Are Singing -All Great Box sets !!!👍

I was lucky to grow up not far from Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton NJ which was an awesome shop. I remember being fascinated at the import section in the late 80s and looking at the original UK Parlophone Beatles albums, and how exotic and bizarre they seemed. I was also lucky my best friend's dad had been a DJ for Armed Forces radio and apparently stole every record the US military ever purchased lol. I always thought Rhino as a top notch label. They always provided great liner notes, hard to find rare tracks and alternate mixes, etc. They also seemed to use rare band pictures for their covers, which really caught my attention in the shops. In looking back, I think the Bobby Fuller Four release was my most favorite. I only knew "I Fought The Law" and found the rare instance where I loved every other song on that comp. Like you, I was a big fan of the baroque-pop sound of Merry-Go-Round. Also, I'm glad you mentioned the Chocolate Watchband (whose track "Are you gonna be there (at the love-in)?" is one of the great garage band tracks of the 60s, IMO). Finally, I was shocked when you referred to the Standells as an L.A. band. I was familiar with their hit, "Dirty Water", which I had played in a garage band back in the day. The song specifically mentions Boston in the lyrics, and so I had always assumed they were a Boston band. However, the Standells didn't actually write the song. I grew up in Boston, and I was well-aware of all the 60s Boston bands -- The Remains, The Barbarians, Beacon Street Union, Ultimate Spinach, Arlo Guthrie, Earth Opera, etc. Now I can cross the Standells off the list! Nice collection you have Matt, brings back some good memories of my own record hunts back in the 70s. My late BIL had a real treasure trove of CD compilations by Time-Life and Rhino for 60s thru 80s music. You are planning a profile of the Monkees is that correct? That will be a tough one IMO since the band has been so extensively documented. Also the issue of the band's success and popularity being derived from chart hits written outside the group, I don't remember the band's own music having much impact at the time. Cheers!

Rhino used to have a record store on Westwood Blvd. in Los Angeles where back in the 80's, this was one of my main sources for seeking out out-of-print 60's albums and recent releases of compilations of 60's artists (e.g. See for Miles, Edsel/Demon), primarily UK bands. But my introduction to 60's music was listening to oldies radio in Los Angeles on both AM and FM radio in the late 70s and early 80's. This was where I first heard for example, the Merry Go Round (Live), Sopwith Camel (Hello Hello), New Colony Six (Things I'd Like to Say), Sunshine Company (Back on the Street Again), Danny Hutton (Roses and Rainbows), etc. Was there an oldies radio station in your locality where you could have at least heard the greatest hit (or two) from these artists first?
The Love greatest hits album (where they're posing in the desert) was the earliest Rhino compilation I ever saw in the shops in the early 80's, along with the Love Live picture disc. But the Forever Changes album was still in print back then, along with the Love Revisited hits collection (both on Elektra). I personally never bought any of the Rhino compilations on vinyl back in the 80's, was never really interested in them (would have rather looked for the original 60s issues). Only much later did I pick up the Rhino reissues/compilations - the Monkees' Missing Links collections and the original albums on CDs, since they contained bonus tracks. I already had the original LPs on Colgems from their first to the "Birds and the Bees". The collection of early David Bowie/David Jones 45s and outtakes from pre-1967 is one of my favorite non-Monkee Rhino releases.

Great video again Matt, nice to hear you mention some groups I listened to in the 60's. As a teenager then with only AM radio when you purchased an album you played each side completely while reading the liner notes. I made a few purchases which have withstood the test of time and still enjoy listening to, the first albums by the Merry-Go-Round, The Left Banke and Moby Grape are still some of my favorites. Moby Grape 69, my second favorite Grape album should have been the follow up to their initial release, it has some tunes on it. Hope you do a history of Grape someday - their manager and recording company did them in - besides drugs on Skip Spence.

I bought quite alot of Rhino Records CD's many years ago. Super Hits of the 70's (Have A Nice Day), Billboard Top Pop Hits, Soul Hits of the '70's. And who can not forget the "Golden Throats" series where celebrities sang or spoke pop hits, like William Shatner's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". Leonard Nimoy's rendition of "Proud Mary", Jim Nabors doing "You Are The Sunshine of My Life"?? And as an encore?? "Mr. Tambourine Man" by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy's "If I Had A Hammer". Guaranteed to clear out any leftover stragglers from that party you finished up a couple of hours ago.

Excellent job Matt, love your channel and topics. I recall Rhino also got into releasing albums by (then) current artists. I bought the Beat Farmers first record on Rhino, which came with a booklet made from the band themselves, pretty hilarious. As I recall, there were a few releases Rhino did with a booklet inside, there was a cool one inside one of the Bobby Fuller comps. I also enjoyed just going over the plastic Rhino inner sleeve, looking at all the other artists and comps. Beau Brummels, Left Banke, the Nazz and so many others. I got to give credit to Rhino for doing a great job of reissuing the Monkees catalog. I think it gave a newer generation and others a chance to reassess their music. The Monkees might have been looked at as square or bubblegum, but I think time as shown they were a great band, and Rhino did a fantastic job of showing that...

Just some observations, as I had tons of Rhinos back in the day (still have CDs). Standells: one listen to full-length "Rari" will make you a fan. Troggs: would love to see a dive into this band (a favorite of mine). Outsiders: Sonny Geraci was a class performer up to the end, lots of internal strife within the band, loads of LPs put out, not terribly polished, but I loved them (had them all). Cryan' Shames: best Chicago based band ever (and I'm not a Chicagoan). I could go on about them, but one listen to "A Scratch in the Sky" LP will make you a believer. This is a neat collection, and a cool overview. FWIW - what I'd like to see: Troggs, Spanky, NC6, Vogues. Keep 'em coming! Great stuff.

One of my favorite rhino records is a really great box set it’s a three box set series but I only have the two of them and ask do you want that’s the simple title of the first one and then do you want to. I love the doo-wop box set the first one because it has all the essential tracks like why do fools fall in love by Frankie Lymon and the teenagers one Summer night by the Dan layers and it even has Randy and the rainbows Denise along with so many great classic songs. I think they’re still doing box sets and CD compilations another box set that I was able to get called song book by Gordon Lightfoot

The CDs they put out in the 90s of their albums were lovingly packaged. Best looking CDs/cases I owned at the time! As a result of actually owning their own records they were able to license their music to Rhino. But one compilation that I always loved was their first venture into licensing" "Happy Together Again." It was a 29 track double album on Sire issued in '74. I did/do love that band. Matt, A totally enjoyable video. And based on the comments, I am hardly the only one to think so. I think that you really touched on the personal experience of finding the vinyl, later CDs, of bands that are more or less forgotten. Music does not need to be famous to be enjoyable. A tour through your collection of See for Miles or Edsel or other British reissues (Big Beat covers the Chocolate Watchband and SF scene well) would be entertaining. As a child of the sixties I have a bit of shame about the large gaps of my knowledge in this music beyond the hits. Then I listened to Rhino's Nuggets cd box set in 1998. After this my listening habits changed. I lost interest in a lot of the prog and fusion I was listening to and became obsessed with garage , psych and freak beat. I also regularly listened to Little Steven's Underground Garage. It would be good if along with band histories , you could have guests like Steven Van Zandt , Lenny Kaye and others to give an overview of this genre. I know you've got a lot on your plate , but OVERVIEW doesn't mean band histories for garage bands. Anyway thanks and keep up the good work. 👍👍

This was fun. Just going through the record collection generates topics of interest. If you are looking for a topic, I have a suggestion: The difference between American and British sound in the 60s. On your episode about the Small Faces, you said one reason they did not sell well in the US was they sounded very British. I'm not what that means yet. The Yesterday's Papers channel has reactions from artists at the time to songs. One thing that is heard occasionally something like: "definitely British" or "definitely American". This intrigues me. Thanks!

@@popgoesthe60s52 The source for Yesterday's Papers is a London newspaper in the 60s. An artist (American or British) would be played songs without telling them anything about it. The reactions were then in the paper. These were ambiguous songs to the listener for the most part. Obviously, Beatles, Supremes, or the Beach Boys would be recognized right away. There seem to be a lot of these, but I have not listened to that many. I've heard Stevie Wonder and John Lennon among others.

    Hi Matt:
I also relied on Rhino to really beef up my oldies collection! I have the Standells Rarities album too, great album! The Best of The Standells (the one in the predominantly pink cover) was one of my first Rhino purchases. Later I replaced that with the Best of Standells that you displayed in your video. However, I bought the CD. I gave my younger brother the Best of that I had bought on vinyl.
I also have Nazz Nazz, but mine is an original on black vinyl. For a while it seemed that the red vinyl versions were more common, but the last time I was on Discogs it seemed like there might have been more black versions.
I really like the Left Banke, but I never bought the Rhino comp, but I did eventually buy the "There's Gonna Be a Storm" CD comp.
I first heard The Merry-Go-Round on one of Rhino's Nuggets comps (You're a Very Lovely Woman). Eventually I was able to snag a promo copy of "Live"/"Time Will Show the Wiser."
I also have the Byrds' In the Beginning on vinyl. Same with Best of The Chocolate Watchband, which I really like! Also have the Turtles Greatest Hits, but mine is on CD. I also have the "Missing Links" album on vinyl, which I think is really, really good! I have Best of The Troggs on vinyl also. Best of Love was my first Rhino purchase! "Forever Changes" was perpetually in print. I have the "Crimson & Clover"/"Cellophane Symphony" CD too. I really like it. I have "Crimson & Clover" on vinyl, but I wanted "Cellophane Symphony" so I bought this CD. As far as Nuggets albums, I have Vol. 1: The Hits, Vol. 2: Punk (my personal favorite of the series), Vol. 3: Pop, Vol. 5: Pop Part III, Vol. 6: Punk Part II, Vol. 7: Early San Francisco, Vol. 11: Pop Part Four, and Vol. 12: Punk Part three.
When they released their Nuggets 4-disc box set, I loved it so much that I typed a letter (no computer yet) to Gary Stewart praising the set, and Rhino, on every level. He responded with a very nice letter explaining that he had put his heart and soul into that project, and to receive that level of praise was extremely gratifying. He went on to say that he felt that they never got it quite right on the twelve volume Nuggets album series. Personally, I think it's a splendid series!
Some of the other Rhino albums I have are some of the Billboard series; The History of Rock Instrumentals: Volumes 1 and 2; The Summer of Love 2 LP set; Introducing The Beau Brummels, The Larry page Orchestra - "Kinky Music" (picture disc); Frat Rock 4 LP box set; The Monkee's first album; More of The Monkees; Headquarters; The Birds, the Bees and The Monkees, and many, many more! I absolutely love this video!! It's really fun to see and be able to compare each other's collections! Thanks so much for sharing Matt!!!
