There's a kind of beauty in the child who discovers his love for the Beatles and proceeds to become a connoiseur collector. Thanks for sharing, Matt-you're a journalistic treasure and a gem of a man.

LOVE the Easybeats!!! They had 3 albums and several singles, all great, when still in Australia, before getting to the UK and Friday on my Mind 😉
Huge fan of Donovan too, you're right, that Live album is fantastic!

I have found that no matter the storage approach, there will always be logistic issues when actively buying more albums and trying to retain an alphabetized collection.

    • @multiverser9585
      @multiverser9585 Місяць тому

I know it sounds like a crazy idea, but I've been thinking of re-shelving all my records and instead of the order being alphabetical by artist name, I would order them by release date. Sometimes I get nostalgic for the sounds of a specific year or timeframe in history. I haven't committed to doing this yet, but I'm considering it. Anyone have any thoughts about it? Up to now, I've always done alpha by artist name.

    • @shyman99
      @shyman99 Місяць тому

@@multiverser9585 - It would reduce the moving around of albums but not completely eliminate it because I'm sure you buy albums with old release dates. The biggest problem with your idea would be the difficulty of remembering the release date to be able to quickly locate an album. I would think it would require creating a spreadsheet with the release date of an album because it would be hard to remember all of them offhand. Unless all of your listening is based on timeframes, I would stick with the alphabet.

Reminds me of the film High Fidelity. I think there is great value in sorting by release, it forces you to really remember more!

In the early 80s "The Grassroots" played at a dance bar I attended (frequently) and when they started playing "Midnight Confessions" I let out such a squall that it brought a smile to the singer's face.Love your show Matt.👍

Brass Ring Disadvantages of you! Remembered the tune (from the old Benson & Hedges TV commercials) but could never find it until meeting a DJ who knew who did it - a quintessential 60’s happy memory for me!

Just stumbled onto this site. In 1966 I was 10 years old. I used to listen to my older siblings albums. A lot of psychedelic stuff, pop, garage rock, blues, etc. I even listened to The Fugs.
I still listen to 60s rock. Have recently got back into garage rock. It's crude, sloppy, loud. I love it.😊
Great site, will be back for sure.

Beau Brummels. Sad Little Girl. My husband was a musician in the 70’s. He and his brother would record in his studio in the basement. Sad little girl was a cover they did. Made me cry. I’ll never forget it. I have their reel to reel recording on CD now. 😀

Yeahhhh... like this! Always wanted know what Matt has in there! Some interesting things. It's not a massive collection, but exhaustive collections are just, well, exhausting. I can see the amount of material for band biographies is enormous. Viewers of this channel just sort of expect a Grassroots bio to come along. Seems natural. Looking forward to part two!!

I always considered this collection to be average size and I’ve gotten rid of some just to keep it manageable. I wanted to keep these 2 videos to digestible lengths so I skipped by some artists for the sake of time. When I moved there in 2022, I really felt like downsizing!

If you cover The Grassroots anytime soon, please make sure you mention that their big hit, " Let's Live for Today" is a note for note rip off of the chorus of the Drifters hit, "I count The Tears" released 6 years earlier. I had to chuckle when you displayed that album cover

Excellent, Matt! I was hoping you would get to the letter I... as I am curious if you have or have heard of the late 60's band The Illusion from New York. They put out 3 albums in 1969 and 1970, and had one hit single "Did You See Her Eyes", which reached #32 in the US in mid-1969.

The Beatles Beat by Odeon - an import that my brother was able to find in a record store in the late 70's and passed it down to me - the All Music Guide has a very positive review on it. I was also able to find a copy of the Boston Tea Party LP back in the 80s. Cilla Black only had one U.S. album in the 60's - "Is It Love" on Capitol. I was fortunate to find a copy of that album in the racks as well. One of the comments talks about the Box Tops' gatefold LP "Non Stop" which I was able to pick up. For my non-Beatles/Stones/Who LPs, I never went out of my way to find specific titles for my modest 60s collection - I only picked up whatever I could find in used record stores and thrift shops from the early 80's to the early 90's.

I see a lot of familiar albums in there. i have well over 1000 albums I'd say 75 percent of my collection is 50s and 60s. There were so many changes in music during that decade. i liked everything from early teen idols like tommy Sands and brian hyland many others. To mid 60s groups like grass roots or gary puckett who like you said had many hits but for many years didn't get appreciated really many still touring i met peter noone and tommy james last year so still can catch some of them. Lastly, it took me forever to find that critters album it is indeed great, and i have 3 of Gale garnetts albums as well. I'm glad you mentioned her.. 😁

Also, I don't know how you would feel about this, but novelty tunes were very popular in the 60s. This was mostly with us kids and our parents. I know it is more of a Dr. Demento thing, but novelty songs are very 60s and 70s. Anyway...
Thanks for the tour, Matt, and I look forward to more!

You possess a very thoughtful collection. Love how all your genres are blended together - (the way it should be) - Glen Campbell, 13th Floor Elevators, The Archies, Jimi Hendrix, etc.
And GREATLY anticipating your 5th Dimension video!!! The Magic Garden is also my favorite 5th D LP, but I truly LOVE them all. I do wish though that they had put Ticket to Ride on their previous release, Up, Up and Away LP, where it was originally slated, and placed Rosecrans Blvd. on The Magic Garden album. (which would fit SO well with Webb's "Susan" concept on TMG). Also, like you, I have listened more to the 5th Dimension than any other group over the last several years. 5th D as you know had a very gifted supporting cast in, Bones Howe, Bob Alcivar, Jimmy Webb, and the Wrecking Crew...what more can one ask for?

Matt, I loved this episode, especially as it was a trip down memory lane going through the new releases at the local record store. For those still acquiring vinyl, '67 was when albums, specifically stereo albums, took over from 45s. You showed the first Blues Magoos (mercury) and HP Lovecraft (Philips) albums which I bought in mono only to find that the record inside was stereo. The Mercury/Philips/Smash (Left Banke's first album as well)/ ... stopped making mono records and just put stereo copies inside the sleeve. Then the companies phased out mono as stereo records listed for a dollar more ($3.98 versus $2.98) so the record companies effectively raised prices by 33%. I love the first Critters album, but the army kept depleting the group, so, for me, the next albums were not up to the standard of the first. And in 1991 Sundazed put out a live CD by HP Lovecraft (May 11, 1968) which is superb as the band could play the studio live and extremely well. May I request the Beau Brummels, HP Lovecraft, & Electric Prunes (whom I saw live circa 2003 when I talked to bassist Mark Tulin who said that the band only really made(the first) two albums - producer Dave Hassinger owned the band's name and recorded what he, not the band, wanted including Mass).

Billy Nicholls is worth a listen and if you don't already have it, Forever Changes by Love, released in 1967 and another band worth a try is Downliners Sect. The Move (if you don't already have them in your collection), more commercial but you do have the writing of Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne.

Nice collection and some really rare titles there. Was that a genuine, original Butcher cover Yesterday and Today? Sandy Bull was a surprise since you rarely go back to the Folk Revival, and he was a lesser known Vanguard guy. I like that you get all of even a one or two hit group's albums; the later ones nobody knows can be very interesting. Please do the Beau Brummels, who were all the rage along with the zombies in late '64 then vanished (zombies would be great with their 1969 comeback (even though they had already broken up). I'm glad you appreciate the Fifth Dimension, whose Magic Garden is a pop masterpiece that failed to sell but now has a following. (they are totally ignored by the critics, who didn't know what to do with them). I remember Kites Are Fun by the Free Design, who were probably too jazzy for AM radio. I can't even imagine taking on Dylan

What a diverse collection. Definitely covers all genres of the '60's. When you talked about Hendrix not being a great vocalist it dawned on me, probably because you had just showed the "Guess Who" albums, how much I love Burton Cummings' voice and their fairly sophisticated compositions & jazz- flavored music. Very unique band. Lots of great ones in that A-H collection & quite a few I've yet to hear. Looking forward to your future installments!

For A Capella groups I'd love to see a bit on the Persuasions and the O'Jays, both groups put together harmonies and beat complexities to rival Stevie Wonder. They may have been an inspiration to Manhattan Transfer but they mostly built on Lamber, Hendricks and Bavan and later with Ross.

Terrific collection, Matt! Shout out to four of the bands you mentioned that I would LOVE to see band histories of -- the Easybeats, the 5th Dimension, the Grassroots, and Guess Who. (Also, possibly Francois Hardy. However, while I don't want to offend anyone, I have to admit that I've never been fond of Grateful Dead.) Looking forward to part 2!

Matt, I got some Russian CD versions of early Beatles releases, which I believe are bootlegs, they do have some interesting bonus tracks, most of which appear to be Beatles rehearsal material and a couple things I have no idea about. FYI. The Indy store that sold me these went out of business a year later, sorely missed.

Great collection! Used to have a crap load but sold them at the Princeton Record Exchange some 30 years ago. Mistake! I still have couple Beatle bootleg double albums - "The Ed Sullivan Shows" and "Live From The Sam Houston Colosseum" afternoon and evening concerts from Aug 19, 1965. I'm a big DC5 fan. Saw your "Weekend In London" album. That was hard to find for me and very good. Their "Satisfied With You" album was the first one I bought because they looked like The Beatles on the cover. Look forward to part 2.

A lot of bands at the time in one way or another tried to catch up with "Pepper".
But "Dolls House" is one of the albums (along with "Sorrow") that outperforms pepper in my humble opinion.
And overshadows "Crimson King" with ease anyway.

Hi Matt - thanks for this video! very, very interesting!! I've got a "healthy" LaserDisc collection, which includes all of the Beatles LDs you showed, plus LET IT BE - yup, the latter's quality pales in comparison to Peter Jackson's GET BACK (and will also look inferior to the upcoming overhauled LET IT BE), but, my LET IT BE copy on LD has served me well over the past 42 years! maybe 15 years ago, I copied it to DVD-Rs for myself and a few friends, in case either of my Pioneer LaserDisc players died; I got rid of my original LaserDisc player (it still worked fine, but, since the sound was analog, I decided to save some space and lose it), but, the better second player (with digital sound) is still working perfectly! (I rarely use it, though) Anyhow, I digress! Thank you for the tour through your vinyl collection and I am looking forward to seeing the next part(s) !! Mike

Thanks Matt.. I would be interesting to see you delve into the Easybeats because they can lead into the production team of Vanda and Young (although that would walk down a more 70s path with AC/DC and the Angels and everyone else on the Alberts roster) .. oh and you said once long ago you were considering a Twilights retrospective, is that still on the table? Looking forward to part 2 :)

I was quite delighted that you own some Tim Buckley albums. I would have thought you owned the "Dream Letter: Live In London 1968" album. Essential Tim Buckley, (maybe the best of all his albums) as it captures him in the beginning stages of his "Happy/Sad - Blue Afternoon" period.
(PS: I also thought you would have owned the Carpenters' "Offering" album, - sandwiched between the Glen Campbells and Chad and Jeremys - since you've expressed your love of Bacharach, early Bee Gees, and the Association. I know that Richard and Karen were influenced by those guys, as well as the Beatles and Beach Boys.)

As you just got into Francois Hardy, back in 1963 a single that kept The Kingsman Louie Louie of the top spot, The Singing Nun-Dominique, it was a worldwide No1 single, certainly the most unusual foreign song to ever achieve such fame! Reading about her life is quite a story!

I have one 1970s revolving wire record rack, 7 foot tall, 3 sides supporting 4 flights of albums. Alas the remainder of my remaining collection is stacked against walls on the floor in 2 rooms. Even in my heyday before I sold so many, I had nowhere near your epic range. You actually have a record shop in your house, Matt.
Mine are relics from '60s pressings up to maybe 1990, with only I AM KLOOT discs into the new millennium. Also, I haven't changed my curtains in at least 15 years. Bachelor's privilege.
There's a funny yt VC parody video about that, not my curtains but someone else's, & with an incredible historic coincidence attached to the vid related to 'The Crazy World of Arthur Brown' ('Fire'). When I laugh at the UK chap in that vid the laugh's on me too. One of the very rare VC parodies that is not an attack vid, if I find theaddress I'll show below.

The Davystrangename parody only gets to the local history & curtains joke at 5 minutes 30 seconds, when ' *The Crazy World of Arthur Brown* ' is shown. The arrow sign is simple & brilliant, how *parody* should be but usually isn't. 5:30 is where it's at:-

Enjoyed the video, but I had to laugh. On a recent video by JustJP, he reacted to a Chilliwack song and he too pronounced it, Chilli-wack. I grew up near that town in British Columbia which the band is named after and just letting you know it's pronounced, Chill-ih-wack. Anyways, onto part two of your look into your collection. 👍
