D&B here at last!! I enjoyed your comparison of the tool and your "home made" version. I think there is a place for both. However, as you have just demonstrated, D&B can be emulated quite easily so I am wondering why they didn't introduce Clone and Stamp first as this is something you can't do any other way (apart from erase, but more intricate work needs C&S - still having to hop over to another program if C&S is needed. Fingers crossed for C&S to come soon!
@@AnthonyTurnham Good news!! Just opened NEO to check for the D&B update along with the new HDR Merge (free for me as an owner of Aurora) and it says the version 1.1.1 is the latest update!! Has it been released yet or have you got an early test version?
@@brucecampbell4485 Thanks, yes, I remember seeing that date. Hi @Nigel Moore the general release date for the update is in fact 28th July 2022. I got crossed wires on the info. My bad. A couple more days and you'll be good to go!
Hi again Anthony! Nice to see Skylum re-introducing the tools available in Luminar 4 and Luminar AI, but still no 'clone stamp' tool! I agree, dodge and burn can be overdone, so like yourself, I only subtly apply it. By the way, Masterclass please Anthony! Regards from. Felix the Cat. 🐱🐱
I have good hopes for Neo, but until they fix the issue where keywords are stripped out unless you are using Lightroom, I can't use it full time in my workflow. This has been going on since Luminar 3 at least and they don't seem to be able to fix it, or care to. Thanks for another great video, Anthony.
Masterclass would be nice. What is missing from these tools is the normal highlights, midtones, darks, options for the dodge and burn. Feels like a quickly cobbled-together and half-finished module dropped in because users said "where's the dodge and burn". Pretty much like the HDR add-in that has no control for the user from the makers of Aurora (it is barely better than nothing - but then I do still have Aurora). I've been a user of Macphun (skylum) since Aurora was first released and I still only see NEO or AI as effects plugins for use with apps that have much better core editing tools
I have been using Neo now for a couple of weeks and find it to be a really useful tool for my photo editing. This was an interesting video and I'm sure down the road there will be improvements to the new doge & burn tool. I use a lot of what you demonstrated in the develop tool and for now, will probably stick with method #2 as you described.
Great tips. But, I'm confused why you inverted the mask before you started to burn/dodge. Why couldn't you just start brushing once you adjusted the exposure?
Just keeping you on your toes Tom 😜 No, in seriousness, it's nothing more than I like seeing my image as is, and taking a few seconds to visualise how to approach the dodging or burning before I commit to laying a brush stroke.
I appreciate your extreme attention to detail. As we know, the devil is always to be found hiding in the details and if we are not concerned about the subtle details then, frankly, we are not worthy of calling ourselves true artists but are actually nothing but crude hacks. Obviously, not all things we produce are needed to have the ultimate high art treatment but for those works that do warrant it compromising and saying "that's good enough" is like swearing.
Although I'm not a huge fan of the Dodge and Burn tool, I am a fan of the new HDR Merge plugin for Neo Find out more here: bit.ly/HDRMerge. You can save when you buy it with NEO using the code ATNEO here: bit.ly/NEOandHDR or if you already have NEO you can order your copy of the HDR Merge plugin here: bit.ly/HDR4NEO I hope this video is useful to you! Let me know if you want a deep dive into the best ways to apply the dodge and burn technique. Just write "masterclass" in the comments to let me know. If the interest is there I'll put something together.
We have reached version 1.2 of Luminar Neo, a program that since version 1.05 has a huge bug. After cropping a photo proportionally with, for example, the original dimensions of 5184x3456, when we finish editing if we export indicating that we want the original dimensions, Neo simply ignores the instruction and keeps the dimensions after the crop. As I mentioned the problem only arises I think in version 1.05 (or 1.06 I'm not sure anymore). And no one at Skylum detects the bug. As long as it persists, the acquisition is not justified.
I'd need to do a bit more research into that for a definitive answer. I'd expect similarly aggressive and still better to be done through the develop tool.
Hi Anthony, what happens if you duplicate the layer and set the blending mode on that layer on luminosity. After that dodge and burn on that layer. Is it correct that I won't see any color shifting? Regards.
Hii, I have Luminar program, but I can't even edit one image, the program is very slow, I have a Mac mini m1 16 GB RAM and a Sony camera a7r Iva , what is the reason for the slow program? The program also takes a large hard disk 😓
Bottom line is Luminar is very dependent on AI and takes a lot of system resources to run. Fast CPU, large amount of RAM and ideally installed on an m.2 ssd for optimum performance. I also shoot large raw files but find 32gb ram and the Ryzen multithread chipset handles it well.
Hi John. Usually dodge and burn comes later in your workflow. So dev raw would be used to set the base of the photo as shown in a lot of my other videos, then you'd build your edit from there. On subsequent applications of the develop tool the mask becomes available.
Anthony, have you ever considered compiling all your wisdom and expertise into a Skillshare or MasterClass course? I would pay...whatever sum you felt was fair... to access all your lessons, techniques and skills within one Super-Course! You are my Go-To Guru for all Real Estate, Luminar and Adobe suite photography wisdom. I do not see it in my luminar Neo. I own Neo, AI, and Aurora. I check for updates and it says I'm all up to date with version 1.1.1 Am I missing something?
I think so. Version 1.2 should be available to you through the "check for updates" or autodetecting that a new version is out. If you're still not having luck maybe reach out to Skylum helpdesk.
Hi Anthony, I enjoyed this video because it confirmed what I had learned and have been using to effect from another of your videos. I'm still waiting for the clone tool but I'll be patient.☺
Hi Jackie, it's a nice idea but the dodge and burn tool used on the grey layer doesn't "see" the information underneath so effectively it's no different to painting with a white and black brush to dodge and burn. Which, yes is of course an option, however, luminosity blend mode also has it's own limitations when dealing with saturation shifts (or the lack of them) when you change the brightness or darkness with more intensity.
Aha! Thanks. I assumed layers in Luminar might work the same way they do in Photoshop. Off-topic related sidenote: it would be great if Luminar could send layers back and forth like we can send Photoshop layers to Luminar and back again. I think it'll happen eventually, so everything works as a plugin to everything else. A bit like how midi and vst became universal standards and transformed the audio world, making it better for everybody.
Hi Dean. V1.2 of Luminar Neo drops on 28th July. Sorry, I got my wires crossed on the general release date and wrongly thought it was available from the time Skylum lifted the embargo on sharing info on it. Sorry for the confusion!
Masterclass would be good. I feel luminar is doing too much quick fix which can take longer than your method when the quick fix method doesn't look right. Personally I use on1 to develop and dodge and burn and luminar to add finishing touches
Hi Martin, in certain instances I take the approach of editing in Lightroom, then Photoshop, then finishing in Luminar, and sometimes some Topaz along the way for image enhancements.
Does photoshop dodge and burn desaturate colors? Also, why doesn’t the company just fix this damaged tool? I gotta laugh as Luminar and ON1 have now both lost me as a customer going forward. BOTH companies engaged id]n a quasi bait and switch practices. You but Neo and then only after you buy it, they start hitting you up for big $ for shit that should be in the damn orig. program! These “add ons” would have been product updates a year ago. Now, they lure the user in with a LACKING product, then want to charge you another 80.00 to bring it up to speed! Pathetic and a low blow for previous customers. ON1 is just as guilty.
I use ethe same technique in Photoshop because of the change in saturation. It's complex to explain but it's just an optical by-product of the lightening/darkening effect. Personally I'm okay with the new extensions. The core of the program is all there and you can fully edit without any of the specialist extensions. HDR, focus stacking and AI upscaling are all things that most companies that produce them charge for as they're pretty dedicated bits of code/development. Photoshop is the exception - however that's a subscription model and you also get these tools included if you choose the subscription with Luminar.
Are you talking about Jon Wetherby's Pro Panel for Photoshop? It's a nice tool but you gotta own PS to use it. A lot of viewers for this video are Luminar owners interested in the HDR function. Very different things to compare.

How does D&B go with RAW files taken in colour but edited to various B&W tonings (not via BW Tool but via a gradual process of edits) or for Sepia

Hi Anthony, what happens if you duplicate the layer and set the blending mode on that layer on luminosity. After that dodge and burn on that layer. Is it correct that I won't see any color shifting? Regards.
