  • Here are the potential causes of vertical, or longitudinal, ridges on your nails. Nails are composed of a hardened structure called keratin, and take several months to grow. Any process that interrupts the growth will result in changes to the nail appearance, often times resulting in ridges.
In this video, we discuss the causes of vertical nail ridges including aging, nutritional deficiencies, trauma, underlying medical conditions, environmental exposures, and more.
By finding the cause of your ridges, you can help restore your nails to their normal appearance.

I’ve had raised ridges on my thumb nails for several years that is associated with Hashimoto’s Thyroid disease ( which I have ). I started taking Selenium and Zinc just recently. My nails ( in a matter of 2 weeks ) have returned to healthy looking nails again. AMAZING transformation.

The ridges I had for over 30 years turn out to be a B12 deficiency that was never treated and I ended up developing pernicious anemia..a horrible disease 😢
Dr's always said all my symptoms were in my head

@DoctorMikeDiatte yes plenty of other symptoms..chronic fatigue, smooth sore red tongue, blurred vision, black outs, nose bleeds, migraine, walking into walls, brain fog, slurred speech etc..
      And they still missed it.
Thought I had MS , Dementia etc..
Years of tests and the damage to my central nervous system was already a lost cause..
Now im left with left leg and arm drop ( like a stroke) muscle wasting in legs and arms.
And all they had to do was test for my " active B12 "
I have to recieve B12 every month now, for life.
      Thanks for getting back

Helen, I also had undiagnosed pernicious anemia for decades. Very low energy, upper body wasting, brain fog, blurred vision, heart damage, paleness. Started getting numbness and pins and needles in my hands before a Dr. of Chinease Medicine found it in blood tests, which was the first thing she had me do. She put me on liquid methylcobalamin B12 with adenosyl in it and iron pills and vit. C. They say people of northern European descent, especially Irish , Scottish and English have it in their genes. Ive got a good amount of Irish and a little Scottish in me. So much for the luck of the Irish.

I started applying vase line on my nails after every kitchen work completed and my nail quality improved. I also eat curd each day for my b12 as I am lacto vegetarian, and try to eat more greens. It was so helpful, especially the auto immune condition like Hashimoto thyroiditis that makes iron absorption difficult. Since I switched to eating more berries in my food platter, things have stabilised remarkably. Thabk you.

I’m 67, I’ve done the fake nails, glue, smothering my nails to the point they couldn’t breathe. Our nails need moisture, oils, and yes I have ridges. It took 2 months of constant moisture application and wearing gloves for dishes, what an improvement. I also put gold bond under my nails. Don’t try to bend your nails or use them as tools. I’ll use nail polish for special accusations only. ( I have very thin nails)

I since I was a child sufferd from anaemia periodically, years later I had my gall removed which increases nutritional problems leading to daily intake of Vitimine suplements ,then found out my thyroid was slightly low function but nothing much can be done about it, so my nails have always been brittle, ridged badly and so it gets worse as I get older.Never had good nails and so I just keep them short neet and just look after my hands ,the hair is thining and brittle also so its a fight just to look ok.....but it appears its stacked against me.

I went to the doctors because my finger is all my middle finger on the right hand was all swollen and the skin was coming back on the cuticle and I went to the hospital and they said the lady doctor said it was a blocked cuticle. Didn’t tell me how to treat it, but I treated it with that stuff what you keep clean your hands with all the time when we had Covid, but what it’s called, but you know what I mean, that’s the only hands on that finger all the time, and it healed it after a while, but then the doctor said he’s got any more trouble at 32 and another doctor I went to another Doctor Who is an Indian doctor and he said that to you or are you’ve got arthritis I said yes and I showed the papers which which a hospital gave me paper to tell me of arthritis and he said that you need that finger near the word for it, but it means take the bones out each side and I won’t be able to bend it properly well and he said if you’ve got pain I’ll do it when I get saying, I’ve got no pain I took a picture of a me a hand and he said in between your joints are in between a finger you’ve got no fluid and in between and I seen this happened but I didn’t believe it there’s any might be right, but from that day till this day said he’s an operation on your finger is a doctor told me to block cuticle. Will it healed of adobo problem with my finger except it is slightly swollen with that’s that’s the arthritis fair enough I’ve got a pain in the fingers, I can use my fingers just as normal as you can’t at the moment so that’s always trust the doctors telling you because my instinct told me it was a first one what she said it was, it was a block cuticle is swollen, and then I will fluid coming out at the finger on the top of the finger. It’s rolled up like a balloon are at but I know that but it got burgers all the liquid come out did it again and again and then it stopped that are treated. It myself went to the hospital like I have explained to you And then it cleared up at self and even if the doctors secretary rang me up to are you going to have your finger done? I said no, but I’ve got no pain. It was about to take the bones out your fingers unnecessary and I do is block cuticle like she said because it cleared up and I’ve had no pain with it okay with sore on top where the queue to go and give it to the joint itself wasn’t give me any any problems that are still family fingers and do bricked up new number I could do it so I know if it was okay I just thought I thought is to yourself people wise to somebody want to do an operation pop in for money I don’t know I know he gets paid he might get extra because he’s doing is about to be outside finger about the way I work for the health service 33 years service I wasn’t qualified but I kind of knowledge to know a little bit.
