Huddersfield station is awesome. It reminds me of the old joke about Bristol. The city with a railway station that looks like a cathedral, and a cathedral that looks like a railway station!
I travel to Huddersfield from Leeds daily for university, and I can say the station building never ceases to take my breath away. A magnificent and beautiful piece of architecture!
Totally agree with you, I use to go here sometimes when at college in the '80s, it is sad though that they appear to have to have done only the bare minimum in investment since then, but that could apply to everything outside of the south-east, good luck with your education.
While many people seem to dislike the class 802s because of the comfort, I believe they are great stock. They have been allowed to give an intercity service across the pennies boosting capacity and enabling further use of the transpennine route.
Excellent review!
you might like them 90 percent of us do not, if you like to be squesed in thats ok, its a pity you missed out on the 6pul units and 4cor units, they were comfortable and did not have do gooder anoucements
@@petersmith4455 Pretty harsh take on these. The old stock on this route wasn't bad comfort-wise but came nowhere close to meeting demand. These are better suited to the route when compared to the older stock and will be significantly better for the environment as they can run on both diesel and overhead wires.
Thanks 😁
The 802s are a bit naff same as lner ones for longer distance but for short distance there ok
They're good trains but their build quality can be questioned as well as their interior. The seats are my main criticism. Surely there are seat designs out there that save weight but are still comfortable? Maybe use the same seats as the GWR/Scotrail HSTs?
"Very poor window alignment" - a good turn of phrase for total indifference by rolling stock designers. Other than that, Trans-Pennine tend to be my favourite franchise and I will often take them out of choice over Avanti.
As a fellow-Yorkshireman I was heartened to hear you refer to Leeds City station by its traditional name!
Another good film Dylan, I think the commentary is better than sub-titles.
Great vid😊 love your channel it always brightens my mood when I watch you
You’re so lucky to have the best train service, ever. Here in the States, it’s miserable. Love your videos!
I agree. I'm green with envy.
I love the look of these trains...the livery looks smart and inside looks cool too...Good report.
Thanks!
Newcastle station is impressive and the city is lovely! You are missing out and need to visit! Great video as always Dylan. 👍🏻
I enjoy layout videos.
I enjoy all your videos very much.
Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman described Huddersfield Station as “the most splendid in England”. There may well be several other stations that would challenge that claim but the fact is that for a traditional industrial northern town like Huddersfield, the station is indeed a splendid one.
Make a New Years resolution to get off the train at Newcastle to see the station and have a walk through the center of the city. You'll have a very pleasant time and maybe it will inspire you to do a video on your visit. Absolutely love your videos! Keep up the good work!
there is plenty of TOCs he could try to get up there, perhaps a XC offering, or a one off on the tyne & wear metro,
Definitely agree at 11:03 the livery of their trains really does look so much better than the old livery. I always have that whenever I see their trains in person.
Sorry I missed this on Monday. The holiday threw me off & I forgot. Yes, your home-based train station is a beautiful structure. It's nice to visualize where you depart from. Your current train is sleek & modern. Peeking in at first class doesn't seem to have seats any thicker than what you had. Everything does seem to be quite clean & well kept. For the price & distance it was a goodly price. Hoping they get the food service back on board. Merry Xmas & a happy, healthy New Year. Happy traveling.
Great to see the Huddersfield Station again. We have followed Felix for some time and when we were visiting Manchester (from New Zealand) in 2017 we were pleased to see her in person when we visited Huddersfield. I have heard you mention Her Royal Floofyness before in your Reports.
That seemed like a good, smooth ride. And quite picturesque. That'll go on my to-do list iff I ever make it to the UK.
Respect from the Colonies.🇦🇺
Brilliant video. I absolutely love York. Such a beautiful place. Loved the National Railway Museum.
Thanks, Dylan! That was a fun trip!
Those coastal views are magnificent.
As in other reviews, TransPennine seem to offer a good product with these Class 802 units, although I think Lumo have done slightly better on the interior (perhaps they took their cue from TP and improved on the padding, lighting and several other small points. I must go back and have another look at Lumo to confirm my thoughts. At any rate, these units make up for the lack of capacity on a single Class 185. I was fortunate to have a couple of rides on these units and thought that a 5 car set would have been a better offering. i'm just wondering what my own local regional train operator, V/Line, might do when it comes time to replace 4 and 5 car loco-hauled sets that have a catering facility for medium/long distance journeys. The lovely V/Locity units at 3 cars long just don't cut it for journeys such as Melbourne to Echuca, Maryborough or Bairnsdale. Anyway, thanks again for a great review of the TP Class 802 units and hope you and your family and friends have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and can avoid this latest Covid curse, Omicron. Cheers from Michael.
Thks for the trip !!
Hi Dylan great channel I used to work on the railway for gwr at Paddington and Oxford 13 years and loved it think your channel is really good there are a lot of routes I like my favourite one is Nottingham to Skegness just because it reminds my of my childhood growing up in Leicester and always used to go to skeggy on bank holidays and in the summer I wouldn’t say it’s spectacular but there some nice quaint little places that it goes through give a go one day maybe keep up the good work
Hi Dylan, just popped on to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too.
Your videos are great! I like it👍 The fact that class 800 runs on electrified train lines and also on non-electrified lines is interesting.
Thanks a lot!
What a rebel you are, going up the stairs that say "No Entry"! :-)
Nice content as always
Another brilliant video, thank you. I have to say though, that the translation app is hilarious. My favourite on this video is at 16:29. I live about 4 miles from you)))
I appreciate that different coaches may give different ride. My Azuma to Edinburgh a few months ago vibrated a lot above 115mph. I'm booked on lumo in Feb, so I'll see if there's any difference. My local 80n in the West Country can also be a mixed bag.
Wrt seats, the 2nd class GWR seats catch me on the back of my thighs where the seat rises towards the front edge, but as you say, the shape is generally ok.
I worry the units will age quickly, given the current variation in ride quality between different coaches.
Great trip on a nice livery train.
Felix & Bolt !!! 😍😍👍👍👍😆Those trains all looked very nice !!! And this train ! Those blue chairs are looking good 👍 The padding looked a bit too thin ,though !! But,you said very comfortable despite some bad reputation ! Do they reclin ? It looked o.k.for a 3hr trip !! Very clean ,too !! Does it have a cafe ? I just wondered . It seems like every train stations in England has Costa coffee !!? Lol. Very convenient !! What a huge platform in York !!! I'd love to go to Whitby someday !! I am planning to visit Devon ! Your videos are always very nice & interesting !! Your vlogs make me feel like travelling all over the world by train !!! That must be a fantastic thing to do !!! 😍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🎄🎁🚈💕💞
Great video !!
awesome scene of Huddersfield station - soon to change with the rebuilding for the wires
Great video,
Another great video.Totally agree with you about the scenery north of Berwick , I always liked to have a meal on the mainline service from and to KX when travelling to Edinburgh along this section of the line. What could be better ?🍽🥃
what a amazing video the interia is awsome the seats look more comphy than the lner azumas livery great i might take a trip on one
I was fortune to do that journey from Leeds to Edinburgh on a TPE Nova 1 just prior to the first lockdown for £2 each way!! I got the tickets in the TPE ticket sale. Also, at Morpeth they switch back to diesel for the remainder of the journey as there is insufficient power to meet the demand for trains running on electricity.
Great review Dylan. I have been on these units a fair few times and in my opinion the seats are an absolute disgrace. These trains could be incredible but the seats and the abysmal ride quality really do let these trains down. On the plus side the acceleration really is amazing.
Always a memorable trip running up the east coast mainline. I don't think I've ever done the west coast. Only got as far on there from London to Preston. Cheers. Dylan!
Don't expect any coast
I agree that coastal stretch north of Berwick-u-Tweed is incredibly beautiful.🙂
Another great video but a bit surprised you showed a power station and didn't show a view of Holy Island. But who am I to question why lol 😆
Nice scenic trip. The fresh spring green looks inviting from this late December view. I assume those are Scottish Broom bushes blooming alongside the train. Durham Cathedral was a monumental sight alone in the distance. If the place is amenable for it, I think it might be good if you give a tour of the National Railway Museum.
@15:14 Wowzer .. you really need to visitt the city and the station at Newcastle .. and BTW we have a great football team too (at last !)
Regards from Whitley Bay (10 miles east of NCL)
You got bloody lucky with no fountains 😉
Aye, too right 😂
Awesome 👍👍👍 bro
I hate it when people complain about these trains, I really don’t get it why these are so hated. Lighting is fine, leg room is good and seats are comfy, what’s not to like? These trains are perfect intercity Units.
Nice video . Thanks
Dylan - I hope you got the right thing today. I meant to send a tip but accidently sent a request and there was no way to immediately cancel it. I saw it was finally cancelled and meanwhile sent the tip I had intended. Sorry about the mix up. Thanks for another year of great videos.
I love York. If you get a chance to visit the railway museum, allow yourself a few hours. It's worth it.
I originally came from Huddersfield it’s an impressive station 🚉
I'm a tram and I approve this video! :)
YES I live really close to huddersfield. In birstall in fact
Definitely missing out not featuring Newcastle Central station in one of your videos, together with the opportunity to visit the city too. Could take a short trip from there to Wylam where George Stephenson was from also.
I have to agree that Huddersfield along with Liverpool Lime street have 2 of the best Facades in the North of England and that is coming from a Lancastrian.
Nice review of what I would call "just another class 80x" - although TPE are calling it the Nova 1, from what I saw it looks just the same as another Class 80x...
Hi Dylan. I love your videos! What was the worst train trip you recorded?
Brilliant video tpexress 802 nova 1 is my favourite train I need try other company got iep 800 feet and 2 tpexress trains
I do want a TPE trip again on a Nova,
You should do the York to Harrogate to Leeds line - awful jointed track, semaphore signals and parts of it are single lined.
Ah well at least we get Class 170s and some of the scenery is stunning !!
Oh, I subscribed.
so, Dylan's a Yorkshireman!!! who would have thought that! Eyup!
11:50 You can see the A1 60163 Tornado parked outside the National Railway Museum in York.
Which I had a pound every time, I have been up and down the Concourse at Huddersfield Station. Go watch the Terriers when they are at home, never ever seen, Felix and Bolt though through years of trying.
We generally go to Edinburgh every March, never caught the train at Dewsbury, usually get on at Leeds.
Thanks, Dylan! What beautiful Scottish landscapes, it is beautiful Scotland. But have you moved? I thought you lived in Scotland.
Lol, Im the conductor on this train between York and Newcastle!
Once agian, congratulations, Dylan. Very inerestin.
Travelling to see the national rail museum with my brother and based off some deductions I made Im guessing its one of these trains I will be taking (personally wish it was the 185s but ah well)
I’ve been on first class on the train Edinburgh to Newcastle it’s really not bad
6:38, the table looks like a monster where the two eyes are the cupholders.
In 866, Northumbria was in the midst of internecine struggles when the Vikings raided and captured York
In 1068, two years after the Norman conquest of England, the people of York rebelled. Initially they succeeded, but upon the arrival of William the Conqueror the rebellion was put down. Just wanted to correct your statement regarding the Viking capture of York.
Great upload, people must think Huddersfield is really nice when they arrive and see the station when in reality its a cesspit with the most miserable people ive ever come across (i was born and raised in Huddersfield so I'm allowed to say🤣) glad i moved to Rotherham. The Huddersfield to Sheffield train is nice for the scenery once you get through Lockwood and the local kids aren't lobbing bricks through the windows 🤣
It's a gorgeous livery. I remember walking into Scarborough one day when I was about 10 and there was a class 185 with the new livery. Confused me at first lol
The same happened to me at leeds
Merry Christmas buddy from Alan Shelley
Merry Christmas to you too.
Nearly at 100k subs!!
Looks pretty much the same as the 397 which I travelled on in June between Manchester and Haymarket.
If it’s like the Class 800. Maybe Transpennine Express Class 802 Nova 1 could of been Class 804. Huddersfield station is amazing and is like York, Bristol Temple Meads, Newcastle and one large stations with canopies. And the subway has been improved with new lifts added to make the station step free accessible.
I think it’s rather fitting that I got adverts for TPE on this video!
I haven't travelled on one of these but the seats on the "Javelin" trains (similar class) out of St Pancras seem fine to me. These trains are also bi-mode, 3rd rail and overhead electric, they do travel at 140 mph on the HS1 sections but sometimes have to wait as Eurostar does not like it's 180 mph trains to have to slow down with a slower train in front!. Will be interesting to see how the planned changes to the railways improves journey time for services like this.
I heard the javelins are prototypes of these trains, therefore having better seats (on javelins). The seats are similar to the class 700s, but I can’t say if its good or jot because I say every seat is good :)
I generally find it outrageous that in modern trains due to the airline style seating the seats are just randomly in alignment with the windows.
Personally I really like the 802s, I think the blue interiors of TPE and Hull Trains are brighter than the dull GWR sets but much less over the top and harsh than the red of LNER. Could definitely do with softer lighting though! Being blinded on a night is never great.
The 802s also don't suffer from the same issues as the LNER Azumas where different lengths of trains can lead to unit types being swapped out, short sets being run and reservations being completely useless.
They also don't have the issue of a quiet coach in the middle and standard class wheelchair spaces right at the far end of the platforms in London that plague the LNER sets and reduce accessibility.
Litterally this, tweak the lighting, better bike storage and proper set diagraming and these are good units wwith performance that puts their predecessors to shame.
Boa viajem Dylans lindo trem 🚆 azul
Everything past the station frontage in Huddersfield seems grim. I shuddered at the state of that underpass.
What are the chances this pops up in my recommended when I took this exact journey with my partner a few weeks ago to see family. The train itself was over 20 minutes late which isn’t uncommon and as this is the last train to get to leeds from Huddersfield before 9 it was rammed with commuters for the first 20 minutes, although after this it was quite a peaceful journey. It’s a shame its the only direct service but neither transpennine or cross country seem like they’ll be putting another service on any time soon.
I travelled on one of these train recently between Edinburgh and Newcastle. Overall they are very smart looking trains with nice interior, but I found the seats to be a little too uncomfy even for a journey of just under two hours. Then again that might just be because I’d had a hard day at work and I’d only just gotten off an overcrowded class 385 from Glasgow to Edinburgh and of course that’s on one of the infamous ironing board style seats. So by the time I’d gotten to Newcastle I was begging for something really comfy
Maybe do the class 185 Cleethorpes - Man Picc
Dylan, can you help me understand the difference between the terms 'saloon' and 'carriage'? Also, you have convinced me to explore your hometown on my next UK visit.
Interesting video!
The Huddersfield station is very impressive but I’m surprised that it seems small inside. I was expecting a huge hall to match the classic facade but it seems you immediately go directly to the platforms. I wonder if it was always like that. I would think that a Victorian station would have had an impressive passenger ticketing and waiting area.
I agree that the blue colour of the trains is great (the only other colour that I think is impressive on trains is red, such as the Italian ones).
Huddersfield is due a pretty substantial rebuild in the near future as part of the upgrade of this route to high speed running and electrification. As far as Im aware though the passeneger facilities are very similar to when the station opened and wont change a huge amount after the upgrade in terms of size (aside from a potential northern entrance linked to a redevelopment of the goods yards on that side of the station).
I'd say the seats are firm but rather ergonomically friendly
Not just Huddesfield, Newcastle, Glasgow Central, Liverpool Lime St, Leeds, St Pancras, ...... Britain is home to the most beautiful train stations collection in the world.
it's very blue
Doesn't Huddersfield have a station cat? Answered with two cats who are super adorable. have you ever wanted to liberate them on holiday? Was the drone noise annoying which sounds like it under the seat?
"In good working order", while you're waving your hand around frantically trying to trigger the sensor
Wow
Just noticed the panto on the other 802 @16:06 didn't deploy
Are you sure about the at seat service? I've done Hudds to Dewsbury and Hudds to Leeds returns in the past month and no sign of refreshments on any of the 4 TPE trains I traveled on :(
I really am jealous about your trains and stations compared to our shit here in US. But that blue train looks like a subway consists not a train.
My family and I where told to bored at the 1st class carriage and sit in the wheelchair section (on nova 1 it’s the only place for wheelchairs) it was late and meant we didn’t have to take our baby out of her pram
Good vid. But for Scots, the Royal Border Bridge is the border, whatever the de facto situation is…
Strange. I put in 0828 to Edinburgh and there’s no direct train says change at Newcastle.
Wish Transpennine would reinstate the Edinburgh to Liverpool services. But instead there Increasing the Edinburgh to Newcastle part only with 1 of these type rumoured to be getting added to the Scotland - Manchester route inbetween the 397,s
The underground passage to the far platform. The concrete/ stone pieces appear to be the worse for wear. Tripping hazard??
