Francis had the best character development on the show up to a point. He started out as a delinquent and ended up a rather responsible adult. Each of his experiences, no matter how terrible, was integral towards his growth. At home, his friends and brothers encourage his irresponsibility and stubborn rebellion, and he takes his screaming matches with Lois as victories. But the military academy and Spangler represented the harsh truth of life that it doesn't care how much you whine or scream at it. Alaska and Lavernia represented the unstoppable nature of life, and that fighting against it is futile. Otto and the farm represented the responsibilities of life, and in a place where nobody was stepping up, he had to take charge. Ultimately, the writers didn't know how to progress further and they stumbled him around after abruptly making him mess up with Otto and get fired. They really regressed him back to wanting to blame everything on everybody else, making excuses for himself, even though Ranch Francis was properly matured.
Francis wasn't supposed to be fired in season 6, but rather stay in New Mexico. He and Otto were supposed to have more adventures around the ranch. The only reason for Francis' firing in Hal's Christmas Gift was because Kenneth Mars who played Otto, was suffering from Pancreatic Cancer in 2006. Thus, he was unable to reprise his role and retired. Which is sad since I liked him in being the cheery, kind, albeit careless boss to Francis' newfound maturity and being a responsible adult.
D33Y4 yes all true, I think they just ran out of ideas for Francis, I wish he had stayed with Auto and Grechin as they were great side characters who added to the comedy. It was after he left the ranch that his character started regressing and not developing anymore. Plus the reason he even left the ranch didn’t add up to his or Auto’s character.
ladyfire44 thanks for that info, I wish Otto could have stayed on as a character because like Stevy and his dad as well as the rest of Hal’s poker buddies they greatly added to the comedy. Francis didn’t have many good stories after Otto had to be written out.
Honestly I hated that they screwed over his character at the end. There was no reason to butcher his character development and make him regress to his season 1 counterpart.
@@Kronoblade99 Fracis at the ranch shows what it means to truly grow up. It's extremely relatable, because that's how life goes for most people who don't pursue higher education. You start out confused, lured by the amazing offer on some job, Alaska here, then you realize just how much jobs can suck, but you learn to accept it somehow, thinking there isn't a way out because you need the small amount of money to survive. Then you finally stop working there because of some unexpected reason and you find yourself somehow different, feeling free but strange, because to adapt to that crappy job you had to adopt a certain mentality to make it through, not maturity but adaptation, and it's the only way you've known how to live for the "longest" time. But you stop working there and you feel confused but somehow liberated and you find a new job, somewhere with actual responsibilities and where you can at least enjoy parts of it. Where you finally think, this might be it. For most people they'll go through at least 5 jobs, some better paid, but hard, and when you quit and work elsewhere, you realize that it was pretty good, but you weren't mature enough to appreciate it. Some jobs are much easier, the pay is ok, but it's so demeaning to be working there, it's beneath you. But you keep trying, and you suffer all on your own, and you try to make it, you try and get more out of life. You balance money, quality of life, stress and so on. Sadly we didn't see Francis grow up even more after the ranch, he was left unfinished. he was my childhood crush in elementary school. now i'm 18 and i still understand why i felt this way. he always had the most adorable and charming face, especially when he was smiling. irresistible, great and funny character.
I started this show sometime during the 3rd season or so and I remember finding it so odd a dynamic that Francis was written to be this isolated character from the get go, always separated and doing his own thing. It was a stroke that caused Muniz' memory loss
Corycool2
I would call that tragic.
He can remember the show, that was media spread bullshit
"theres a good chance i won't remember any of this" ... Yeah be careful what you wish for.
She's a good Mum! Malcom is a genius & Lois knows it, he will be fine no matter what, she is not caulus!
She is callous. Down to her core (and she even admits it when she hunts down the girls that humiliated Reese), she has some of her mother's craziness and passed it down to her sons. She's also incredibly stubborn about everything, but she does love her kids. She is the backbone where Hal isn't.
Lainey
She has a dark side but cannot be called callous. panda pub describes her perfectly.
"The one good thing about a head injury, there's a good chance I won't remember any of this."
And now we know why, Frankie Muniz remembers absolutely nothing about being on the show
Well Francis was talking to his younger brother Malcolm he's talking about roller skates he he said a bad word a sailor talk
I've heard that some memories of being on the show have come back to him, but not a lot. And it's very jumbled. So sad!
That foreshadowing was deep af.
Hal is a great dad. I personally love the part where is confronts Francis about the car. I love that part
“This week is my intervention, better put me down as a maybe” hahahaha
One of my favorite all-time lines from the show probably my favorite all time sequence of lines from the show if you will
"Uh oh!"
"What?"
"Its TOO clean."
"Youre right... they'll never buy it."😂🤣😂🤣
goddamn that show was one of the best things to watch after school when i was 14,15, good memories, and i remember re-watching it fully in 2015 and yeah still good, one of the best shows ever
Actually Francis does have a point. That guy was simply just hugging his father.
Affection should never be frowned upon or called out. 48:00
I think Francis's friend Eric was hilarious in the marshmellow eating episode
“Aunt Helen died?”
“We’ll I sure hope so we’re going to her funeral” had me cracking up
Even Commandant Spangler knows when he's beat when Lois is on the scene.
It's so funny how your perspective and view changed as you get older. By that I mean these kids look so young compared to when I was first watching it as a teen. Francis always looked older when I was just a teen watching. Now watching at 33 he looks like a kid too lol.
francis should of had his own spin off
“Francis first” 😂
Francis in the Front
Francis On Top
21:26 Should I remind you all that This guy took "Going Commando" to a Whole New Level?
"You wanna know the thing about a head injury? There's a good chance I won't remember any of this."
Too true, Frankie :(
I know this is about Francis,, but when Lois ask "where's your eye?" Kills every time!! 😂😂😂
I love how proud of Francis Hal was at the end for sticking up and helping the others even if he got in trouble for it
43:37 "yeah Francis that's Malcolms Spot"
OHHH Francis can freaking get it. Childhood and current crush tf
Up until the end of series 6 Francis had the best character ark growing into a responsible working adult. No idea why they destroyed that in series 7
Season 7 screwed over Reese too. Sucks that they rushed that season so badly.
@@grylos5887 yeah they just made him a high school janitor.
Why didn’t they do anything with his cooking? Like have him go to culinary school or him becoming a head chef.
11:03-11:09
Just the referee’s look and how the whistle falls out of his mouth......priceless.
41:03 to 43:10 is exactly what it's like living with ADHD.
"Okay now I'm studying hard, for real. Concentration mode engaged."
*30 seconds later*
"Oh wow, the plaster in the wall next to me almost looks like a person's face when the light hits it at the right angle. I wonder if there are more in this room."
...
I just realized that as I'm writing this comment, I'm over 40 minutes into a video after getting distracted from another video, after getting distracted from learning how to use blender, which distracted me from when I planned to mow the lawn three hours ago. Jesus Christ this show is the most relatable thing ever.
This was one of the funniest shows ever on TV, and it was ahead of its tim, too, because looking back at it now, as an adult, there are actually a lot of positive themes surrounding minorities, particularly homosexuality and disability.
I'm pretty sure this is literally every scene with Francis so yeah it absolutely is the best bits
8:53 damn creepy, i heard Frankie had a severe memory loss or something,
The quack marshmallow one, omg. 😂😂😂😂
Reminiscent of Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke."
