The first episode of Dragon Ball Z revealed that Goku had been an alien this whole time, a member of the Saiyan race, a warrior species with great power and a thirst for battle. Since then, we learned more and more about Saiyans, from episodes of DBZ to Super and even the franchise’s latest film. There’s a lot to know about Saiyans, especially when it comes to the personality traits, attributes and coincidental occurrences they all have in common.
Everything from their taste in mates to their strange aging and its many side-effects, the Saiyans are an interesting people, each new fact learned being just as fascinating as the last, which is why we decided to round up some of the most interesting things that ALL Saiyans do in the main canon of the series. I always saw the kids turning SSJ as a show of the fathers strength. It took Gohan longer than Goten and Trunks because Goku was weaker at the time of his conception. That goes for Pan too since Gohan stops his training and gets weaker before having her.

I'm pretty sure it was explained as if your father is a super saiyan, you will also be a super saiyan, the better your father is with super saiyan, the easier it is for you, that's why its easier for Goten and Trunks to transform compared to Gohan

There actually is a reason for the tail. The original Dragon Ball was based on journey to the west with Son Goku having a similar name, weapon, physical appearance and even flying cloud mount as Sun Wukong. Many of the side characters also have Journey to the West counterparts, like Oolong and Pigsy being an obvious connection.
Chi Chi can kill anyone weaker than Krillin (99.9% of humans). She ain't just strong-willed, she's the Ox Princess!
Edit: i mean weaker than the z fighters since piccolo killed all the other combatants. Also, Yajorobi is clearly the strongest z fighter cause theyd all be dead without his ninja sword sneak attack skills ;)

It would be cool seeing a short series seeing them get scrappy on planets they needed to conquer. Even if they didn't go super saiyan their could be some good fights and enemies with interesting abilities and technology.
One thing my friends and I all assumed is that a Saiyan losing his tail leads to a huge power increase. Yes they get stronger with every battle, but each Saiyan that loses his tail experiences a massive power boost right after. Vegeta felt so strong after losing his that he thought he already was a Super Saiyan. Gohan, Vegeta, Brolly, Trunks, all of them became much stronger when they didn’t have a tail.
He thought he was a super Saiyan because of the zenkai boost he abused that arc
I don’t think it’s true when they lose their tail also means they lose some power. I’ve researched and having a tail pretty much unlocks all of your saiyan power so I don’t think it gives a zenkai boost..

I've always wondered what would have happened if tarble would have showed up for the tournament of power I honestly think he would be just as strong as cabba but I'm pretty sure that throughout that time he would have got way stronger and he would have probably done super Saiyan transformation just like cabba did

Whenever a Saiyan is in the process of powering up, their opponents just stare at them motionlessly. They fear the increased power level, but it never occurs to them to interfere mid-charge.

However, something like UI or Kaio-Ken which can be attained by someone other than a Saiyan does not need screaming.
The point of theri fights is to challenge themselves. That's why a Saiyan will allow you to go to your full power only to than kick your ass to dust. Jiren follows the same pattern, allowing everyone to power up only to smack them around.

2. Huge appetite, requires tons of calories to fuel power
3. Have tails, incredibly sensitive without training
4. Can control Oozaru form with training
5. Get stronger after recovering from injury/near death
6. Highly aggressive, survival of the fittest society
7. Love to fight, evolved to fight, Halfbreeds are more tempered
8. Attracted to strong, aggressive, energetic, strong willed mates
9. Weirdly, no living Saiyan, Halfbreed or any mix of blood has a tail
10. Saiyans all named after Vegetables
11. All Saiyans have dark hair, and it tends to be spiky, and dark eyes
12. Full Blooded Saiyans hair grows to a point and then becomes static
13. Every sequential Saiyan had an easier time obtaining SSj than the last
14. Saiyans have always invaded and conquered other planets
15. The more kind-hearted a Saiyan/Halfbreed/Mix is the stronger they can become

Regarding the "half-saiyans don't have food names" bit. Gohan *is* named after food. The "Han" part of his name is written with the Kanji for rice: 飯
Gohan in itself means "cooked rice", albeit with the Hiragana Go ご instead of the Kanji Go 悟 that he shares with his father's name, Goku 悟空

I love this video. The only part that I felt was a little misinformed was the part about the half saiyans not having the same innate love for fighting as Full-blooded saiyans. I feel like only Gohan lost his love for fighting. And he didn’t even lose the love, he just lost himself to his studies. He took that saiyan determination and put it toward his education and his family. We then see, in Dragonball Super, that he quite enjoys himself as he gets back into the fighting game. Sure he’s a bit rusty but, it’s still there. Also Goten and Trunks jumped at the chance to fight whenever they could and got quite disappointed when they had to ride the bench.

The tail thing comes from Chinese mythology. When I was a kid my Japanese grandmother would tell me I had a tail. She said they found me in a tree and cut off my tail and that’s how I came to be. I also had a Mongolian birthmark it’s gone now but that’s where they said my tail was.

The fact chichi is the only person that can go kaioken with out yelling it is impressive
I feel like the reason they're able to go super saiyan so easily is because at first it was only a myth so they didn't truly believe in being able to achieve the form. Once goku was able to reach super saiyan they knew it was possible and with goku training and figuring out how to summon the power, it just made it easier to explain to the others how to do it making it basically muscle memory. Hence vegeta teaching cabba how to do it in the middle of a tournament and cabba also explaining his experience doing it to caulifla and kale. That also gives me a theory about how universe 6 saiyans will go back home and teach the rest of their people how to do it because the saiyan race is alive and thriving.

Honestly, those with tails might have died out because they relied on the power of the great ape form instead of using thier natural base form's power. This could explain why saiyans hadn't figured out super Saiyan because if they were in a pickle they focused on becoming a great ape.

Ssj was lost lost in time and the saiyans forgot about It i believe because the Nameks already knew of ssg in their sacred book way before we ever saw ssj don't know why they didn't mention it in the freiza saga oh well but how did they get the knowledge someone knew also vegeta told the story of the legendary super saiyan that exploded because he could not contain the power and Frieza was scared that's why he destroyed planet vegeta as far as I'm aware I don't know if I'm getting my dubs mixed up but this all leads me to believe the knowledge was lost over time
Could also say evolution took over and they adapted to becoming stronger by other means.

About "rule" number 9; I noticed something similar at first and theorized that super Saiyans only emerged after their tails were removed, and thought that made sense. Super Saiyans were basically myth before Goku became one and his tail had been gone for a long time, and Vegeta did so after his tail had been gone as well. Saiyans were probably loathe to have their tails messed with due to the sensitivity and the power that came from the great ape transformation, so they wouldn't realize that by doing so they would eventually be able to ascend to super Saiyan form.

@Merak Firgun Well I was not aware of that at the time. Plus I don't know what is considered Canon past a certain point. Regardless, there is a reason I used past tense when I wrote all that, it was a past theory.
The reason why no living sayian or mixed sayian has a tail is because it constantly puts them at a risk of turning oozaru and breaking stuff. The earlier ones like goku, vegeta and gohan had their tails cut and the later ones Toriyama just made them be born without a tail because he probably did not like the hassle of constantly dealing with the story of how their tails got cut. Toriyama does this kind of thing pretty often where parts of DB that become problematic or he forgets about he simply removes from the story.

@@Biggians00 the funny thing is that SSJ3 was the most popular for a LOOOONG time. Figurines, posters, etc. I understand it being a bitch to animate. But then it's nearly immediately nerfed by toriyama with the excuses that it isn't as fast as SSJ2 and it drains stamina too fast to be useful in a fight. But then goku's red and blue god form come out and are far more powerful than SSJ3 but somehow don't drain goku as fast as a weaker form. We all know that it comes down to the animating. therefore it's just more about being lazy. @@arcadiagreen150 SSG and SSGSS both use "God Ki" which is different than normal Ki and once the form is attained you gain extreme control over your Ki which allows you to use less than one of the more powerful SS transformations so you won't burn out as fast. Lore wise anyway. Also Gundam Wing is a bad example to bring up. If you go back and watch action sequences, pretty much every Gundam other than Wing and Wing Zero get the exact same action scenes in every episode with the background swapped out. Heavy Arms is particularly bad, he does the same "shoot the sky then shoot to the side" move in every fight.
15:18 Freiza actually destroyed the Saiyans out of fear that they would rebel against him. This was later altered as the series went on to be about the Super Saiyan legend, then altered again to be about the Super Saiyan god myth. I wish they would just stick to one reason.
#13 has an answer in canon. A mixed Saiyan is more kind (normally). So it is actually easier for gohan and goten to do it, being half human. So a human / Saiyan is the perfect template to make a super Saiyan. Akira himself has said the genetics for Super Saiyan require a Saiyan, but the "trigger" is easier to reach with a pure heart and since Saiyans had been making a warrior race, it became harder and harder to achieve.

Dragonball was originally made with the reference of the Chinese story 西游记 。 Lots of characters was made off of characters from the story. Like the tail from Son Goku was referenced from the main character of 西游记 which is a monkey(probably where the tail came from)。 Their names are also the same XD (孙悟空 and 孙悟空). Like the 筋斗云，阎王，如意金箍棒 also came from there. On the latter parts of Dbz for some reason they stopped it.
You can have some hint about the tail thing in dragon ball z kakarot.
In a side quest someone asks Gohan why he doesn't have a tail anymore and why the tail of his dad has never grown up again. At the end of the quest they come up with the theory that a saiyan seems to lose the ability to regrow his/her tail after the individual reached a power-lvl where he doesn't need the tail anymore. But like I said, it's just a theory.

Well the principles of genetics in real life is this: if someone has dark genes like black hair and they're dominant and someone is platinum blonde with recursive genes 1 in 3 offsprings are likely to have dirty blonde hair. The rest brown or black. Some blonde genes can be dominant though over dark haired genes but usually not as commonly.

Regarding 8: Chichi IS physically strong, and used to be an accomplished martial artist. Unfortunately, she gave that up when she got married, so probably atrophied quite a bit.
Regarding 9: The tail seems to be a hindrance to Saiyan evolution. Tellingly, ALL Saiyans who have achieved Super Saiyan status have either lost their tails or were born without them. This seems to be confirmed in Super, as the Universe 6 Saiyans are all born without tails and also seem to achieve the transformation very easily, though they also seem to need to know that it exists in order to achieve it.
I've got an official DBZ book from the early 2000's when I was over in the US and it explained that to first transform a saiyan had to have no tail!

The hair color can vary pretty evenly with regard to genetics.
I think the reason that Gohan, Goten and Pan all have dark hair is because the Son-Satan family has only dark-haired humans in it: Ox-King, Chi-Chi, Hercule and Videl all have dark black hair. It makes sense that Gohan, Goten and Pan would share in those genes and have dark hair (since we know the Bardock, Gine and Raditz all have Saiyan black hair as well).
Where as the humans in The Briefs family have more colorful hair. Dr. Briefs (purple), Mrs. Briefs (Blonde) and Bulma (Blue). Vegetas children Trunks and Bulla have Brief-colored hair (purple and blue respectively), instead of Black
The reason Gohan , Goten and Trunks got super saiyan easier is because they're hybrids. Half human half saiyan. Saiyans access the super saiyan transformations easier when they use their emotions but full blooded saiyans aren't good at accessing their emotions. So being half human means better access to emotions which means easier and faster transformations . Seriously CBR if you gonna make DB know your facts

Could argue that Goku got some of his kindheartedness from Bardock as well, since Bardock has been shown to be somewhat more caring than other Saiyans.

the tail situation is that tails get pulled off, they regrow until the saiyan gets to strong and doesnt need to ape form anymore, goten probably didnt have his tail because he reached super saiyan
