JRB's intro was the only music from THE BEST SCORE OF THE YEAR (not to mention the best composer on Broadway in recent years)? That was very poor planning on someone's part. (It's not as if it was a surprise win, either.) Outrageous, really.

JRB said in an interview a few years back that the Tony's instead decided to do a number from Finding Neverland.
A show that hadn't opened yet.
      Produced by Harvey Weinstein.

I would have rather seen this in the broadcast than the Sting/Finding Neverland performances

I didn't get to watch the Tonys due to work very early in the morning. By his opening remark, I suppose the cast of Bridges didn't get to perform? That's some crap right there.
But yay for the show winning some awards!

Yeah :-/ Obviously the producers didn't want to shell out a bunch of money for a show that's closed. Would have loved a performance. JRB's Tonys are well deserved.

Would have been nice if he had also thanked the original author of the book! I understand the bitterness, but still - that's the source material for it all... the movie, the musical...

Why would it have to have cost "a bunch of money"? Two singers, one composer at the piano. Hell, even if they needed to pay for their own hair/makeup/wardrobe, it couldn't have been all that expensive.

You have to pay to perform on the Tony's. As in, you have to buy your spot. It's not a matter of just paying the performers.

why did he ditch Stephen Pasquale? I don't think he would have gotten the performance out of Kelli had it not been for him, the two of them being such good friends and all. what was that about?

JRB should have been more gracious and honest. BRIDGES closed a few weeks BEFORE the Tony telecast after only 137 performances. (ROCKY the Musical ran longer.) Why should the Tonys feature selections from a project whose producers didn't believe enough in the endeavor to keep the show running long enough to be included in the Tony telecast? JRB should have called out his producers -- not the Tonys.

Bridges is a fantastic score and a wonderful piece of theater and countless times, when a show cannot be "sold" to the public it is usually a critical success. JRB had every right to make a comment about it, especially when the show actually was nominated for best score. As a musician, it is shocking to see a comment with such hubris that regardless of a plays closure that if it is nominated for a category at that level (meaning score) that they be given their due. Just my two educated cents.

BRIDGES wasn't even nominated for BEST MUSICAL. If the Tony producers had included a song/scene from BRIDGES into the telecast, it would have tipped the audience that it had won BEST SCORE as well as establishing a precedent that musicals nominated for BEST SCORE would now be featured in the telecast. BRIDGES isn't the first BEST SCORE nominated musical to not have a song included in the Tonys. I believe that although COMPANY won six Tonys (including BEST MUSICAL & BEST SCORE) -- it had no musical numbers performed on that awards night. Of course, Stephen Sondheim graciously accepted his awards and made no snarky remark. Just another way that Jason Robert Brown is NO Stephen Sondheim.

@@crisfranco4717 just because something is done, doesnt mean that we have to agree with it. Im a musician, and I believe when something is nominated for best score, there should be some way to feature it. After all, a musical is in fact a work composed by a composer. Just my two cents Mr. Franco.
