Legally Blonde should have been on this list. It's deceptively complex, requiring powerful leads, a killer ensemble, and the music and staging are extremely intricate and high energy. There's literally a number where the cast dances using JUMP ROPES. Overall it's a challenging piece to do well
I think the difficulty of doing Dreamgirls is overly simplified when you reduce it to just the role of Effie. The entire show requires performers who can handle demanding, technically precise music and dramatic scenes that, if you've ever seen an amateur production, is not for the faint-hearted.
I think "Come from Away" should have been an honorable mention. While it may look pretty straightforward, the entire story is told by only about a dozen actors, all of them taking on multiple roles, including changing accents, some of them having to turn on a dime. Plus, they are ALL out there on stage for the entire show, there are a lot of high energy numbers, there are a lot of emotional roller coasters to manage, and there's no intermission to take a breather! Every time I've seen this show, I've been in awe of what the cast has to do to put it on.
@@shiftfocus1 They really are! As much as I love Philippa Soo, I thought Morgan Anita Wood was even better. And Darnell Abraham gave Chris Jackson a run for his money. Justin Showell was fantastic, too, but nobody can beat Daveed Diggs 😆
Wait wait wait, you’re gonna show Hadestown in the opening but not even going to give it an honorable mention? Swinging lanterns, multiple rotating stage portions, amazing vocals & music, small cast & involved ensemble, and more.
The ensemble for Hadestown are some of the most supremely talented performers out there, they need to deliver phenomenal individual and collective vocal performances, multiple different ensemble characterisations, and dealing with a plethora of props, a moving stage, swinging lights and at times doing it all in pitch darkness! It makes for absolutely mind blowing theatre though, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who loves theatre…or Greek myth…or just joy!
I think Hunchback is a crazy hard show considering the fact that it has an ensemble as well as a choir, not to mention that you ideally create a huge cathedral-looking set, have to work with intense material, and have someone to play Quasimodo. It’s a very difficult show that is amazing when done well.
I was just in Hunchback. I was in the choir, it was intense! We won best set design and best costumes in the Utah Musical Theatre Awards. It was so much fun
Even though I admire the Broadway musical, for me the original Hunchback is and will be Garou in the French version based on the novel by Hugo. "Le temps des cathédrales" and "Belle" to say a few are beautiful. (If you want to listen to those songs, the first one is sung by Bruno Pelletier and the second one by Garou, Daniel Lavoie and Patrick Fiori, there are other versions but those are the originals).
Hi Adam, I do have to admit that The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a hard show. I was in it two years ago as a congregant, choir and ensemble member. There are a lot things to learn like singing in latin and finding your place on stage. Thank you for taking the time to mention it. See you soon on the MsMojo comments.
Carrie is SO hard. You try all those high af belts, and then singing after being doused in blood or during heavy physical work between Margaret and Carrie, and dancing like crazy in some versions of The World According To Chris. It’s hard believe me.
I played Curly for a community theatre and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Could not have done it without my fellow actors and crew. I struggled to find a way to set myself apart from iconic performances such as Hugh Jackman in the London show. I couldn't have done it without the amazing actors, actresses, directors and crew members.
I remember being in a production of "The Little Mermaid" before. While playing five ensemble roles, it was a lot of hard work during rehearsals, but it was a lot of fun during performances.
Should’ve mentioned School of Rock. The kids in the musical was amazing, they even sang a great song all together that every kid could relate to If Only You Would Listen
I’m so glad that Moulin Rouge made the list! I had the wonderful dream come true opportunity to see it on B’way and the Sonya Tayeh choreography absolutely blew me away. Best choreography I’ve seen since Movin’ Out (which probably should have been on this list too).
I was so lucky to be apart of a production of The Lion King jr this summer and I got to play Nala. It was hard work but it was so worth it and I would do it 100 times if I could!
Natasha Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812? With the insane long and high notes from Anatole? Pierre's deep, gruff, operatic voice? The dual role of Old Prince Bolkonsky and Andrey? The emotionally gripping ending? The set design having to incorporate the stage into the audience's seats for the immersive experience? The ensemble having to dance and play instruments non-stop? The impeccable comedic timing?
Come from Awa-y - moving chairs to create new scenes, all the while singing, change costumes, changing character, changing accents! A wonderful musical. I was in "Little Mary Sunshine: in high school - not very complicated.
Thank you for this wonderful video, Ms mojo! I think that the hardest musicals are Miss Saigon, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. As a person with Down Syndrome and an actress in South Carolina, I can honestly say that yes it is a lot of work to be in a musical, but it is very rewarding. There are no limits to what you can achieve, it's so much fun, and dreams do come true!
I have been in my school’s performance of Susical and I was Vlad And my school also did a smaller performance called Back to the 80’s and I was a character called Huey Jackson And my theatre class created a performance and me and another guy did Make ‘em Laugh from Singing in the Rain and made it into a duo
"A STRANGE LOOP", while relatively new, deserves a slot here since the show is 2 hours of non-stop emotionally taxing work from the lead, and an ensemble that has to play at least half a dozen characters apiece. The songs are also not easy to sing - very much in the vein of NEXT TO NORMAL
14:00 Small Hairspray Fact I learned from my director: On Broadway, the iconic song “You Can’t Stop The Beat” has another nickname given by actors called “You Can’t Stop to Breath” because with its high-energy choreography and fast-pace lyrics, finding breathing breaks is no small feat and is nearly impossible.
I 100% agree with your list. Some of the hardest for me personally were also Sweeney Todd and Little Orphan Annie. Since everyone knew them so well the pressure was on to nail it. Not to mention sometimes the crowds would be singing so loud that you couldn't hear yourself. Again just my opinion. I love preforming all of the musicals that I have done though. 10 out of 10
You should have included "Come From Away" which tasks its performers with moving the basic wooden set furniture of tables & chairs into buses, planes (on a mobile circular platform), & school gyms, & handing off costume changes all while singing & doing complex unified movements. Oh yeah, & every performer plays multiple roles, many of which require very tricky accents! And then there's the subject matter of 9/11. And there's a scene where they do movements & singing while getting progressively drunk! And it's an awesome show!!!
From a memorization/rehearsal standpoint I have to shoutout The Mystery of Edwin Drood - having the audience vote on outcomes means the cast as a whole has to be ready for over 30 potential combinations of who's doing what by the end of the show.
Thank god, Chorus Line was mentioned! I was worried it wouldn’t be. I played Bobby and covered for Paul and Greg. Performing show was the most draining month ever. I was doing 2 shows a day sometimes. I also performed in Newsies a while back, I was in 3RD GRADE! This was PROFESSIONAL theater. I only got in because they wanted my mom though 💀
I pray whoever eyes catch this comment god gives you the strength you need to over come every battle your facing. May the dark thoughts and overthinking, the doubts exit your mind right now. May replace confusion. May peace and calmness fill in your life. 🙏❤️
I have performed in many community shows of operettas - mostly Gilbert and Sullivan, but also Mozart; Sigmund Romberg; Richard Strauss; Victor Herbert; and Offenbach.
IMO, starlight express is the hardest musical to preform. It's done entirely on roller skates, singing, dancing, and roller derby in a two hour show, it's exhausting to even watch
in college I was cast as the wardrobe in BatB but was unable to perform it due to royalty issues. We'd only been able to rehearse 3 songs. 2 years later I was in the ensemble of Zombie Prom. My college choir has also done a few musical medleys, including Les Mis and Jesus Christ Superstar, which is a beast.
I did many musicals including Beauty and the Beast, Annie, Honk the ugly duckling story, Once on this island, Sound of Music, Grease, Schoolhouse Rock, and The Music Man. I played the teen angle in Grease.
I’d have put (The Mystery of Edwin) Drood in as an honorable mention at least. The audience votes on a number of elements of the resolution, and the cast goes into the last few scenes not knowing who will be singing the last few songs. Many of the lyrics earlier in the show are fairly difficult and fast as well.
Right now I have done 4 show and they are Annie , into the woods, dear edwina, and Willy wonka soon I’m going to do Shrek and I love your little videos
Weak list. Thumbs down. Do your research. You missed Das Barbecue (5 actors play like 47 roles), La Boheme ( which had 2 casts of leads), West Side Story, Porgy & Bess, Hair, Spring Awakening, Rent, Squonk!, Will Rogers Follies, Mack & Mabel, Fiddler, Groundhog Day, Contact, Marie Christine, Ragtime, Movin’ Out, Swing, 42nd Street, etc.
So your saying, Hamilton has the most words of any broadway musical, is 3 hours long, has the quickest rap of any musical (quicker than rap god) and they still don't win? Tapped man
I saw The Lion King on Broadway 3 or 4 years ago and man it is one of the coolest experiences ever would highly recommend if you haven’t seen it and are in NYC
My first Broadway show that I’ve seen is Miss Saigon after that I have no money because every new show coming out of Broadway I saw them, sometimes I see the show more twice, like wicked I’ve seen them four times it will be five times because I will see the movie first then see the show in Broadway this December, when I die I’ll be happy but broke 🤣
I would have also included bad Cinderella from Andrew Lloyd webbers Cinderella (uk west end) as the actress has to sing and get dragged round a revolving stage and any song the character Cinderella has to sing and the main ones are bad Cinderella, I know I have a heart, far to late and Cinderellas soliloquy which are all fabulous and can be hard to sing plus the soliloquy is a triple reprise of I know I have a heart far to late and bad Cinderella all in one song
The point is obvious, isn't it? Just going straight to belt, and sticking there, breaks every rule in constructing a memorable gig. You need contrast, colour, light-and-dark.
Worth mentioning about Lion king, how many different African languages are spoken throughout the show. I think I saw Rafiki needs to be bilingual. So just another challenge. Also, am I the only one who thinks le mis is just an excuse to show off vocal talent? Maybe it's just the productions I've seen, but if someone played "do you hear the people sing" and asked me to guess who was singing and why, I'd never say a mobile of angry townsfolk ready to revolt. More likely I'd say a college kid needed an interview song. Pretty? Yes. Emotional or beleivable? Meh.
While we're talking about the Broadway shows, I think Hugh Jackman's Valjean and Russell Crowe's Javert deserve to be mentioned here. How about a to Broadway show and movie comparison?
@@PS-DLMA A terrible performance is a terrible performance regardless of their history. Andrew Garfield had never sung before, yet he gave one of the best performances in modern movie musical history. As a musical theatre professional, I would prefer that they cast actual musical Theatre actors instead of celebrities in all movie musicals all the time. However, I'm still able to acknowledge when a performance by a celebrity was actually good. Crowe and Jackman were horrendous.
Cats, Evita, Beauty and The Beast, The Phantom Of The Opera, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sweeney Todd, Rent, The Color Purple, Aida, Barnum, Monty Python's Spamalot, Matilda, School Of Rock: The Musical, etc. should've been on the list. 🗽🗼🇬🇧🏯🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🥁🪘🎻🪕🎸🎷🎷🎺🎺🎺🎤🎤🎤🪗🎟️🎟️🎟️There should be a list of more musicals that are hard to perform, Top 10 Worst Alvin and The Chipmunks Song Covers, Top 10 Worst Kidz Bop Song Covers, Top 10 Recess episodes, Top 10 Reasons Nickelodeon Isn't Awesome Anymore, Top 10 Nickelodeon Game Shows(Legends Of The Hidden Temple, Nick Arcade, Don't Just Sit There, Double Dare, Figure It Out, Brain Surge, etc.), Top 10 Classic Game Shows, Top 10 Celebrities Who Haven't Won An Oscar Yet(Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Tom Hanks, etc.), Top 20 Steven King books, etc. 🎥🎥📽️🎬🎬🎬📺
RENT : The only reason it probably didn't make this list is because a great cast makes it look so easy. But I have seen enough terrible casts phone it in, that it seems like a mediocre show as a result; proving that it is a difficult show to perform. I think Hamilton could be phoned in by a cast and still look great, which means that it is an easier show to perform than you may realize. Hard shows could be challenging on one member may be the hardest, like Dear Evan Hansen or Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Evita, Etc..
any difficulty is any of them including SIX rent chicago cats but heathers mean girls grease you totally need determination stamina confidence to do them lion king maybe fun but the music itself to hard also wicked
I’m sorry but Newsies not being over Next to Normal and Miss Saigon is atrocious. I love those shows but the dancing required for Newsies along with the insane vocals makes it at least top 5 for me

Jesus Christ Superstar...I played Judas over ten years ago...I'm still recovering.
Come from away: each actor/ actress has to have at least 2 roles and moving all the probs

Legally Blonde should have been on this list. It's deceptively complex, requiring powerful leads, a killer ensemble, and the music and staging are extremely intricate and high energy. There's literally a number where the cast dances using JUMP ROPES. Overall it's a challenging piece to do well
I would have mentioned Jekyll and Hyde. The Confrontation number in itself is intensely difficult.
It's a super hard role, but the show besides that role isn't that hard
I love that musical! My mom once played the main character in a twisted way, it was her first acting
They mentioned it in a older video called Top 10 Hardest Modern Musical Songs
@@gingergamer3326 have you listened to the first transformation scene, that scene also must be really difficult to perform
I think the difficulty of doing Dreamgirls is overly simplified when you reduce it to just the role of Effie. The entire show requires performers who can handle demanding, technically precise music and dramatic scenes that, if you've ever seen an amateur production, is not for the faint-hearted.
Agreed. All 3 ladies were heavy hitters amongst the rest of the cast.

I’m seeing the touring production in 2 weeks. Can’t wait!

If I were a Broadway performer, nothing would make me happier than being in “Hamilton”.
I wanna play Eliza Schuyler!!!
By my ambitions I kinda relate to both Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Even though I’m a girl.
I’ll be Peggy Schuyler!

I have been in my school’s performance of Susical and I was Vlad
And my school also did a smaller performance called Back to the 80’s and I was a character called Huey Jackson

Special mention to Legally Blonde. Just watching it is exhausting.
I don't think Elle ever leaves the stage, right ?

Avenue Q: literally singing and emoting while doing puppetry. I would have had that on the list for sure.
Honorable Mention to Gilbert a s Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance.

@@carr0760 i dont disagree with you about casting the right people. All i am stating is people shouldnt disregard their history as performers.
@@PS-DLMA so, because they have prior experience, we can't call out their terrible performances? No...
Hamilton made top 5, no surprise there
All the dancing and rapping and high notes and satisfied (because they had to read do helpless and winters ball) probably would make it in the top 5
I want to do newsies someday I now all the lines and songs
The Impossible Dream (Man of La Mancha)
Half of those were on the list...
I would have put Little Shop of Horrors in there purely BC towey would be so hard to pull of convincingly
I love those shows but the dancing required for Newsies along with the insane vocals makes it at least top 5 for me
If I could sing, I would love to be in Les Miserable.
No! Not Saigon! That. Is. So. Sad, darn it!
I’m playing jack rn in newsies
No Fun Home? Beetlejuice?? STARLIGHT EXPRESS??
