- After I've had the chance to really get a good peek behind the curtain of the three tier system, I have a real fear that some of the best whiskey out there, may never actually make it to your taste buds. The system is broken, and doesn't seem to be getting any better.
There is actually something you can do about it. Stick around to the end of the video to hear ways you can help make a difference.

Randy, you are doing a great job as the salesperson and brand ambassador. Your whiskey also has a reputation and quality that speaks for itself. Good job at beating the system
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Another example of our governments ability to add bureaucracy to the consumers! Let free markets reign!
A lot of this is based in antiquated temperance laws. So really religion interfering in secular life.
He literally says at the beginning that, in his opinion, bootleggers with lots of money influenced the system. This is why money/government is the likely cause. I’m sure that the big distillers, producers, and distributors would net let government ease restrictions. So, they are the problem here.
The wholesaler/distributors have all the power in the system. They are not required to carry a brand, nor are they required to supply a brand to a store or bar. The wholesaler is not motivated to deliver small quantities of craft and makes more $ off sales of big brands. This is great info.
The funny part is they say everything takes like buffalo trace. 😂😂
Good video Randy! The system definitely is broken and you're 100% right the fault falls on the wholesaler. Nobody should be able to tell us what we can and cannot drink. In my state of Iowa I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that a lot of our state allocated bottles end up in the possession of those that work for the state run wholesalers. It's BS.
That’s what happens when the states decide, 51 different liquor laws, need a manual in every state
I'm shocked nobody had run on streamlining a federal liquor standard.
I have your 6 year rye and bourbon and they are fantastic. I saw the 15 year a couple of years back and passed on it. So much regret 😞
System is definitely broken. Typical bureaucracy is involved. Thanks for the information.
Alabama almost never sees anything from small companies. I'm fortunate enough to live near Tennessee. But for many others in the state they will never see some of the stuff I am able to get. This is unfortunate because these smaller guys is what I like to get.
I was just in Nashville and really enjoyed seeing the selection of shelf available bottles. Well done TN
It will be interesting to see how their representative program works
Love the idea for your street team/ambassador program!
In TN we cant even have spirits shipped to us from out of state. Very arcane laws.
It's the same in New Mexico.
Thanks for the deep insight on the 3 tier system! One day I'll benefit everyone equally!
Longtime sub, first time commenting. Just wanted to say that I appreciate the insight and honest point of view provided by your channel.
Love the info you continually get out there. Hopefully there is opportunities in government to get change for the betterment of all.
The more I learn about the three tier system, the more I despise it. It sounds like the system isn't just stupid, but also thoroughly corrupt.
Thanks for bringing clarity of what's going in the industry. This helps consumers to understand what goes on behind our purchases
Its time for a change, why can wineries sell online direct to consumers but distilleries cant. this would change the market so much and get rid of the secondary prices.
Every liquor store in my area (southwest Louisiana) tells the same story. You have to buy case deals to be able to purchase allocations. Or even what they consider allocations. Penelope white label has been allocated to a smaller liquor store.
Great video Randy! The deep pockets are trying not to have the law passed in NYS. NYS Legislature just passed a Bill. Lets see it the NYS Governor signs it to make it a law. Read below:
The New York State Distillers Guild and the New York Cider Association are pleased to report that the New York State Legislature passed a bill that will allow their members to safely ship products to adult consumers (A3132-Lupardo/S2852-Skoufis). If enacted, the bill will authorize intrastate shipping as well as interstate shipping to states where direct-to-consumer (DtC) shipping is legal and that have equivalent license classes. The bill now awaits signature by the governor to be enacted into law.
I feel like I need a shower after listening to this.
Yeah, pretty disgusting hearing about legalized corruption.
All whiskey just needs to stay under 100$ if it’s between 4-6 years no matter the brand.
A lot to digest. Super informative and very helpful. Thank you for educating us! Hopefully this can change in the years to come.
I hate the 3-tier system and have commented on your past videos about this system. I live in Kentucky, I've started just going to distilleries and buying bottles. It's still not ideal. For example, I go to Buffalo Trace about once every 3 months to buy a bottle because they will only sell you one every 90 days. It's ridiculous. I've been a whiskey fan for 30 years, and in the last 5-6 years it's been virtually impossible to get what I want. I found a Weller Antique 107 store pick last Friday for $64. It's the first limited release I've been able to buy at the store all year. I now see retailers gouging the public. It wasn't bad here until about a year ago. I regularly see bottles at retailers now with prices many times what MSRP is. There's a retailer in the town over that has even developed a point system. They have limited releases on their shelves for up to %1000 markup. Every time you buy at the store, you get points. When you've saved enough points, you can trade them in so you can buy a bottle at a normal price.😂 I think it's silly. But it obviously works for this retailer. If you spend thousands of dollars at this store, you can buy a limited release for only a slight markup. This store is not the cheapest store on any product. You're paying more for every bottle you buy. Something needs to change.
The distilleries buy back their gift shop alcohol from distributors. They do not avoid the three tier system.
@concernedcitizen939 yeah, just rediculous. Unfortunately, nothing is going to change. There's no incentive for the people who benefit from the system to change it. It does crush small or new distillers. Kentucky is getting into medical marijuana now too. The system developed for that is completely rigged to ensure big business crushes the little guy.
At Buffalo Trace you can buy Weller Special Reserve, Blanton's,and EHT EACH so as long as you like variety you have 3 bottles to keep you busy for those 3 months of and bring a friend they can get a bottle too.
Solid info on tier system. Glad you r expanding your Prideful Goat ambassador program.
Thank you!
Extremely informative content here. Thank you for sharing.
Love the show, always informative!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks for the insider info!
Our pleasure!
I’ve had many a conversation with my local brick and mortar (Kingwood Texas) about how the licensing is set up. It’s really a crooked system on who gets what and how they have to go about getting allocated items in the shop. It’s ridiculous.
I agree, and I appreciate the in-depth knowledge you've shared on this. Thank you! As the whiskey community grows, we need to be informed and hopefully have the numbers to influence legislation so we can stop getting shafted in price, supply and choice, and mfgs can have rights to sell their wares direct.
Truly informative and great video!!!
Thank you!
Great information, Real talk. Awesome.
This video reminds me why I dislike government bureaucracy and lobbyists so much. With that said, I would love to see craft distillers pool their resources and hire their own lobbyists.
They tried in TX. To have enough funding to be effective they need the larger craft distilleries to participate, but at least one of the larger craft distillers was threatened by their wholesaler and pulled out.
I really appreciate this type of informative content!
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for the feedback!
The more we know. Thanks for sharing the information. No wonder Chesnut farms are pushed hard, but Total Wine is one of the best places for allocated at or close to MSRP around me.
Thank you Randy. You've been essential in helping me to understand the corrupt system, and why I have such a hard time getting really good bottles, at a FAIR price. Keep up the good work that your doing.
Thank you, will do.
Wow.... I had no idea. Great content
Congrats on the remarkable score of 9.0 given to The Prideful Goat 15 by Matt on ADHD Whiskey in his Wednesday blind. Ordered a bottle of The Prideful Goat 8 yr. rye from Bourbon Outfitters a few months back but it was damaged during shipping and the cost refunded since it was no longer available. Guess I’ll try again. Really like to see the smaller producers succeed in today’s crazy market.
I believe it is in stock at seelbach's
Here in NH, distilleries are allowed to sell directly to consumers, however, they are local distilleries, small in size. Is this something that's happening as well in other states? and how that falls in the tier system discussed? Thanks --
There is generally a way in each state to sell direct to consumer, but it is so restricted that it isn't a viable path to market for a full scale business plan.
🤯🤯🤯🥃🥃🥃that’s a lot to take in. Thanks for the info.
Is the 3 tier system the problem or is it the regulation of it the issue? Seems like there's a problem with the wholesale and retail tier. Like plenty of other industries in this country the system is supposed to work for the people but money seems to get in the way
Oh yea! I'm all in!
Hey I’m super excited to see your product is coming to Wisconsin!!! Was extremely excited when I found out today who your distributor is 😏
Btw I can pitch sales for you up here. No problem. (GB) 😉
Thanks Randy, always appreciate your videos. I hate this system and wish we didn't have to go through this BS to get good bottles (or any bottles period). Thanks again for the information ✌️
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic content as always, very informative and I'm going to pick up a bottle of the prideful goat. I'm also in real estate in the San Antonio area and I'm finishing a really nice bourbon room. We should connect on this ambassador endeavor for sure.
I feel like 200 years of alternating teetotaler/temperence movements have continued to muddy the waters here.
The system needs to be changed.
Very educational
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have a list of store where Prideful Goat is available in Northern California by any chance?
www.pridefulgoat.com/pages/store-locator
Call ahead! I don't know who has run out of inventory.
Is there any indication that the bourbon boom now includes enough politicians who are also bourbon enthusiasts that there might be some traction on issues that wholesalers traditionally block via lobbying? Similarly, are there any moves by bourbon consumer groups to engage in collective lobbying to promote reasonable adjustments to the 3-tier system?
Not that I am aware of
I’ve always wanted to get summa dat Prideful Goat! Being a rep is even better. My name is going on the list.
Never tried this product, is it available in Colorado?
We lost our wholesaler in CO. You can find stores that used to carry it on our website. Call ahead to see if they still have inventory.

Good video
Thanks!
❤
cheers!
I saw the PG 15 year last year for $250 I couldn’t do it. For me it was to much because I didn’t know anything about it.
That bottle was originally released at $140. My wholesaler bumped their margin and pushed the price way up. We fired them, but the stores who have it at a high price are usually charging a normal margin.
I thought you were gonna talk about Springbank Cask Strength :(
Ironically that is what we drank on the podcast I did with Dewayne Poor. He has a single barrel.
I’m in. Let me work for you.
That was gross and enlightening. Thanks, R!
Thanks for watching!
Funny how DC skirts the law, rules for thee and not for me, not surprised 😏
Lawmakers need a direct line to MSRP taters
Sign me up Randy🥃
Wouldn’t the evidence prove that the odds of the best whiskey in the market come from the largest distilleries who like 3 tier? I get the argument but there are so many options of NPD and Craft that is not good I don’t mind that it separates the wheat from the chaff.
I get your point, but there have been a couple of distilleries that I have come across that have a great product, but are struggling with market penetration due to system restraints.
Washington State has distillery-to-consumer sales.
I said "Generally speaking producers are prohibited from selling direct to consumer, and when it is allowed it is onerously restricted".
I don't know the laws in Washington, but I doubt they are allowed to ship unlimited quantities direct to consumers without passing it through the wholesale tier.
@@BourbonRealTalk To be fair, if you want unlimited quantities you're probably not a consumer 🙂
We were in Seattle not long ago and we visited Copperworks. I was surprised to find out they could ship me the whiskey we tasted. By buying two bottles they paid for the shipping, and since we were out of state it was exempt from sales tax.
It's a nice little distillery if you're ever in the area, and their product tastes really good. The two bottles had the exact same grain bill, except one used Vienna malt instead of plain malt. All the other variables were identical. The Vienna malt makes a substantial difference. My wife prefers the one with the plain while I prefer the Vienna.
@@bob-rogers I see. There likely is a 3rd party shipping retailer that is acting as the 3 tier system. They white label a website for the producer so consumers think they are buying direct from the producer, but the three tier system is still involved.
When I say unlimited this is what I mean. Let's say you visit a distillery in TX that has 6 different SKUs. You have a great time and you want to buy one of each. Until recently they were only allowed to sell you 2 every 30 days, and shipping was not allowed. All purchases had to be in person. The state was fighting for shipping, but the Wholesaler lobby was too powerful. The wholesalers ended up offering a compromise. The wholesalers would tell the legislators it was OK for them to increase the limit to 4 every 30 days, as long as the producers would drop the shipping request for at least the next few years. The little producers knew the shipping request would likely be stopped by the wholesaler's lobby, so they took the deal. Now they can sell 4 of their 6 SKUs, but not all 6.
Government mandated middle men are always a pain in the A.
They wouldn't exist in a truly free market.
Nothing worse than being harangued by TW employees who push nothing but Spirits Direct products and know next to nothing, in many cases, about whiskey. I cringe each time one of them approaches.
The tree tier sucks
3 Tier system -
Another example of why you never give government power....
I think you mean corporate lobbyists.
@@eafarrar
What do lobbyist lobby for?
Government regulations to secure Monopoly powers. Happens in every industry. Freer market's/ liberalization = the correct answer to the problem
I’m glad you are talking about this candidly.
245👍
Cheers!
This craziness with bourbon is why i am gravitating toward Scotch.
Scotch faces the same issues.
@@BourbonRealTalk nah. Scotch rarely gets marked up over retail price like allocated Bourbon
@@steveno7058 Maybe check out the video. This video isn't about price gouging.
Can someone drop a timestamp to the whiskey part?
