Great video. Thank you. From the sound of the motor, there's something not quite right, is the belt too tight? It may also be that the commutator needs reconditioning. I also notice that the handwheel wobbles as it turns. Something is off there I would think.

Also, the bobbin case carrier (bobbin case base) can be changed without removing the hook assembly.

Yes it can that’s true, but it’s much easier when the hook is out. Often the gib screws are very tight, and much easier to remove when out of the machine.

also there is a basket that has two pins for the singer 306 i think the singer 20u case fits strait in no mod needed if you have basket with part number simanco 105033 but on the 320k singer i had to use the original hook an swap the basket to make it work as the simanco 105025 hook sits to far forward to work on the 320k ,and the locating finger on a 206 singer would fit that gap with out having to use a dremmel as its smaller than a 306

It's possible to make new synthetic belt I guess. Some factories sold different type of belts maybe you can buy simple one and reinstall metal clamps.

New timing belts are available for this machine. From what I can see, they're made out of the same stuff the car engine belts are made of - a rubbery material. Installing the belt requires some disassembly of the upper left assembly.

@@r.duroucher225 some machines don't have replacements. Like German rotary hook Zundapp or Textima Veritas 8014/35 (8014/43 and others). If you know where to buy belts for those machines - let me know.

@@user-zx9cf6xb4q I've no idea about those machines. Sorry. It's unfortunate, the Zundapp machine is very beautiful and it would be a very good thing if replacement parts were available. If you do an internet search for Singer 319 timing belt you'll find various reputable vendors who sell them. It's Part No. 189542P

Your motor sounds like it's less than happy, LOL. I have acquired a 306K that I'm in the process of giving a full refurb to. Unfortunately for me, my machine isn't nicely painted like yours. In fact, it resembles something that came out of a diaper. Since the cover for the head has shed half of its paint, I've decided to strip the top, the bobbin assembly and the machine head cover and repaint them almond. That way, the machine paint issue is resolved, and the machine will have a bit more panache. I'm also replacing the motor. When I got the machine, the anemic .53 amp motor was all but DOA. The brushes are worn very unevenly, the commutator and casing is so choked with carbon dust it'll take me a lot of polishing to get that back to right. I've decided instead to take a 1.5 amp motor that I rescued from a very low hour New Process (Chrysler) built Kenmore 120.71 that is in such good condition the brushes haven't even left soot on the commutator. I'm looking at ways I can reduce the speed so that the needle bar has more torque. I'd change the needle arrangement to an industrial sized needle if I could figure out how to do it as I'd like to use the machine for heavier projects. The one other mod I wanted to make is to figure out a way to get the Bernina/Kenmore feature which allows you to raise the presser foot higher for thicker loads. That one I'll delve into when the time comes. For now, I wanted to thank you for the great video. You've given me exactly what I needed in terms of a second option for changing the bobbin to accept class 15 needles. Thank you for your slow, methodical and thorough detailing in the video. Awesome!!!!

@@shopwornbear1171 you can use a DBx1 needle, without any modification but it need to be oriented as it has round shank.
If you cut a groove in the hand wheel for the belt, and adjust the motor position, you can get more torque and lower speed.

Thanks good video ! LOVE This machine but would be sooo happy to find a 320 at a decent price :-) BTW for some reason I thought there was an industrial bobbin case that is a work around. Can't remember what Japanese machine it is but it starts with a S ? Or maybe a fib on the internet. Is the shaft on your machine bent? Thanks again

First I have see this modification to the hook area. I usually just take a new 20u bobbin case and use a Dremel tool to cut the missing slot in the new 20u case to fit over the single locating pin.
I have made about a dozen this way, no need to remove the hook assembly.
Also it should be noted , the very early machines did not have the locating pin and standard 20 u cases will fit in with no modifications.I have two 306k’s like this, very early serial numbers from the first run.
Singer then had to add in the pin system because of a lawsuit for copyright infringement.
    Great video as usual!
    Thank You

@@sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746 I can confirm that standard DBx1 needles fit without any modifications, and allow for widest zigzag without issue. DBx1 needles are a bit more fiddly to position without the flat edge, though. I have a 319K with the standard bobbin setup.

Have you ever done the timing belt replacement on one of these with the new rubber type? I like these machines but a bit worried about investing time and effort getting it modded and then ending up having to do the belt.

Interesting metal bar at the back of my case to stop the sewing machine falling backwards.
The round bar about 7mm diameter and probably shaped like an Allen key, the short end is a hole drilled vertically into the back of the case and the long part is recessed along the lower part of the case.
My other 319 does not have an integrated handle at the top of the case, the side hinge is missing, behind the rear plate the screw was missing on the pitman arm and that is why it was not stitching nicely. I have bought a 20U case holder and will file out a slot to match the one in the 319 case holder.
Interesting case holder with the little pig tail and internal spring, I believe those features were to stop bobbin overrun when taking you foot of the gas and stop sewing suddenly, I guess this was to keep the bottom bobbin tension consistent.
I have a black 306 that does not have the SLOT mentioned above, there has been talk that some machine when service a modification was made to take the standard needle.
I bought a camera to look at the needle, I see Amazon now sell one that is a bit more expensive £20, I did a few videos some years ago (not on YT uploaded elsewhere )
VITCOCO Ear Wax Removal Kit Ear Camera 1920P HD Ear Wax Removal Tool Ear Cleaner Otoscope - handy wireless connection to your phone.
Many seamstresses back in the day did not like the though of their hair getting caught in the moving parts, I guess Singer lot their shirt trying to sell those machines.
Also with all the oil holes I think to prepare yourself you need a shot of whisky and a shot of oil [single shot is equal to 35 ml in Northern Ireland and Scotland and 25 ml in Wales and England.]
    Great video

That damage to the top of the bobbin case at 7:20 in the video was not cause by using the wrong needle. Any needle will hit the top of the bobbin case when the bobbin case is not fully clipped in position. The manual even has special instructions about that. The longer 15x1 needle only hits the side of the half moon area of the bobbin case and not any part of the hook assembly.

    • @sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746
      @sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746  5 місяців тому

That’s very true, the damage to the case was likely cause by needle deflection when thin needles are used to go through thicker fabrics. A problem when only 12 & 14 needles are available, when maybe a 16 or 18 would be more appropriate.

The needle bar and clamp are designed for a flat sided needle, it may well be possible to use others but this was not my aim, and as there are so many variations and sizes available int the 15x1 globally, there would be no need to use round shank needles in normal sewing operations.

I had good luck with Organ Brand dbx1 needles after only modifying the bobbin case. It seems like there is considerable variance in the shank diameter for this class needle. There is a Comment in the ISMACS Round Shank Needles Table (rev 12/19/23 ). The cited range was found to be 1.59mm (organ), 1.63mm (schmetz) and 2.0mm (Muva). This is handy since the DBx1 is the needle I use on my old iron industrial straight stitch machines.
