Barcodes are typically used to encode a single piece of information - such as the GTIN mentioned in the first video in an EAN symbol (see • Discover the GS1 Barco... ).
If you want to store multiple data elements in a single barcode, then the data elements must be separable for further processing. For this purpose, AI Data Identifiers ("Application Identifiers") and the special character FNC1 are used.
✴️ E X A M P L E
Let's say you want to store a GTIN, a batch number with variable length, and an expiration date in a GS1-128 code.
To inform the reading application exactly where to find the corresponding information in the barcode data, a mapping is done with AIs. AIs are 2, 3, or 4-digit numerical identifiers that specify the meaning of the following value. An - extensive! - list of current data identifiers is available under this link:

The data content associated with an AI Data Identifier can have a fixed or variable length. According to the specification, GTIN (AI 01) and expiration date (AI 15) must always be encoded with a fixed number of digits (N2+N14 for GTIN, i.e., two digits for the AI itself and 14 digits for the GTIN, N2+N6 for the expiration date, again two digits for the AI and 6 digits for the date). If necessary, the GTIN should be padded with leading zeros to the desired length of 14 digits.
It's different for the batch number, which can contain up to 20 characters (N2+X..20, i.e., two digits for the AI and 1 to 20 characters for the batch number). If the entire capacity of 20 characters is not used, then the batch number must end with an FNC1 character.
➡️ In no case should an FNC1 be used at the end of the barcode!
Since this FNC1 character cannot be directly typed on the keyboard, it is specified in @TECITSoftware as a so-called "escape sequence" with the string \F (backslash F).

The data must be entered WITHOUT parentheses. In GS1-128, the data identifiers are always printed in plain text with parentheses, but the parentheses are not part of the encoded payload.

When scanning, only the payload data - without parentheses - is read. Due to the AIs and their known length or ending with FNC1, the processing system can correctly interpret the encoded data.
