    No one else should adapt this again. The Korean movie was perfect.

    After seeing the original around 10 years ago and loving it, i put off the remake for SO LONG until just a couple of weeks ago. i should have just never bothered.

    The Korean version is one of my favorite if not my absolute favorite movie of all time. Thanks for making this, people need to know about this film.

      Karl Woertz But for some reason, Studios has balls when it comes to Transformers and Fast and Furious movies especially Transformers movies despite they're critically panned

    Spike Lee s remake is such a disgrace

    Copley felt like he was from a completely different movie from everyone else. Even with that problem, I'd like to see Lee's untampered with version just to get a better sense of the movie.

    Amazing video, LowRes. I think Will Smith is one of the last action heroes left with some impact. In the sense of John Wayne and Yul Brenner were in old Hollywood. I think this movie would have really been the ballsiest move of his career with Spielberg. In the sense of this being his own like Scorsese did with Departed which stood alone despite being a remake of Infernal I could have seen Zoe Kravitz as the daughter role too.
    You should definitely look into these now abandoned projects if you wanted...like Kathryn Bigelow's Triple Frontier which was suppose to star Will Smith and Christian Bale. Or James Cameron's Spider-Man film, like we never knew exactly why he wasn't picked to direct it in 2002 and Sam Raimi was. Especially how Titanic was so big.

    I'm certain that Spielberg's "watered down" version would have probably been more palatable, both quality-wise and cultural tolerable-ability-wise.
    Spielberg has actually worked with quite a few foreign properties that he's had to make some work-arounds for. (I think The Adventures of TinTin is probably the best semi-recent example. Some of the stuff in that series would probably create major political freakouts today, even if the movie was only tangentially connected to the comics.)
    But I still feel that it's probably best to leave the Korean version as-is. Nothing has to be changed if you can get an audience to go into a movie with a certain mindset.
    For example, if I were to watch an anime, I wouldn't go in expecting a cartoon at all similar to a western animation / disney animation. I would go in expecting an alien, bizarre experience, and I would have to force myself to view it from a different frame of mind, instead of forcing the property to play out through my frame of mind.

    Spielberg doesn't make things 'warm' he makes things warmed over. Everything he touches is milquetoast and he is directly responsible for how soggy and bland most of the stuff from the '80s was, and all because of the overcorrection he made to cover his and Zemeckis' ass for the head rolling incident on Twilight Zone. A Spielberg Oldboy would have been utterly pointless to watch, just as pointless as anything remotely bordering on edgy Schumacher tried, because it never has any teeth. That goes double if squeaky clean Will Smith was attached. People dog on the Spike Lee version but it was actually decent, for Hollywood standards.

    I'm normally willing to give any remake a chance, but 2013s Oldboy was fucking awful.The 2003 original is just on another level. That being said, Smith and Spielbergs oldboy sounds pretty damn good, shame it didnt get made.

    I honestly blame the screenwriter, the guy wrote I Am Legend, the movie was bound to fail regardless of director

  • @ResakuMaatsuda

    I personally despise remakes and as harsh as it may be I would never give them a chance because remakes have a track record of not living up to the original source material. Steven Spielberg's remake however seems very interesting. Of course it wouldn't be close to the original Oldboy as it would be a more watered-down version without the parallels of Oedipus Rex, but I'd prefer that over the hot mess we got that is Spike Lee's hollow and soulless remake that is unintentionally a comedy.

    LowResWunderbred, While this something to do with westernizing anime. I really remake Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Though more based on the manga which the anime is based on. I want it to be a stop-motion film by Laika. Because I want to be a stop-motion filmmaker. Maybe have Spielberg involved with it as producer. But I need to write a script so I could make it.

    If people think Spielberg can't be "dark" they just should watch more of his movies.

  • @Jynkowe
    @Jynkowe 6 років тому +14

    If Spielberg had stayed on the project it would of at least gotten better actors and better performances from the actors. Spielberg can do dark pretty well. A.I. Artificial Intelligence was rather dark and is one of my favorite films of his. My biggest gripe with the American version is Sharlto's performance in it. It wasn't terribly unwatchable, just bad enough to make it not that enjoyable to watch.

    •  6 років тому +6

      Fully agree with both points. It is entirely possible that Spike Lee's Oldboy might've been 'good' had they sealed the deal on Christian Bale playing that role instead.

      -I'm the guy that posts your game pron- I know I’m too late but man I would’ve loved to see his version of Death Note, Netflix and Adam Wingard took one of the greatest manga/anime ever and dumbed it down so bad which makes me more worried about their Cowboy Bebop series

    Spielberg can do dark well especially for Saving private Ryan, A.I. ( Poltergeist) and Munich, wish he'd do it more often.
    Genuinely curious what his adaptation would of been especially after Lees version which apparently lots of footage is missing from the final cut.

    Why would Spielberg's one be any better? The guy wanted to do a carbon copy. Why make an unnecesary remake when you can watch the original?

    • @saifrehman1156
      @saifrehman1156 6 років тому

      It was suppose to be an adaption of the manga. Remember there was rewrite in 2008 which is unavailable for viewing. I don't think Spielberg would have done a straight-up adaptation what made the original one special.

    tbh I can't tell if it's for better or for worse that Spielberg dropped this

    •  6 років тому +2

      Personally, I think it would've been for the better had Spike gotten final cut, or even the opportunity to release a director's cut after the initial DVD release. But because of the current state of reality, IMO, it was for the worse.

    • @Intestine_Ballin-ism
      @Intestine_Ballin-ism 6 років тому +3

      LowRes Wünderbred I don't think a director's cut would've sufficed, there's far more underlying problems in Spike's film than that could be fixed with some post-production magic

    •  6 років тому +4

      I do agree, and I think the second half in particular really makes it all fall apart and that's more on Spike, but I think taking the control away from Focus Features would've improved the quality at least 30%.
