In this one I take 11 different amps for a spin - a 1967 Fender Super Reverb, a tone master super reverb, 1959 Fender Bassman, 1965 Marshall JTM45, Two Rock Vintage Deluxe, Fender Custom '64 Deluxe Reverb, Two Rock Classic Reverb Signature, Tone King Royalist Mk.3, Magnatone Twilighter, a trainwreck liverpool clone and a Victoria Silver Sonic - with a 50's type strat and an overdrive pedal, the Vemuram Shanks. It's great to hear all of the differences, and similarities... at gigging volume!

To me, I was surprised, that the two amps that stood out the most had been the Silver Sonic and the Tone King Royalist.
It surprised me, because both of them derive tone-stack-wise from the 5f6a Bassman/JTM. And after owning a great clone of those, I settled for the older, even tweedier 5e8a Low-Power-Tweed-Twin derivates to find my tone.
But what ToneKing and Victoria made out of the JTM/Bassman tradition is mindblowing.
I really appreciate this video !!! It’s just so cool to hear this many awesome amps in one place

Truly great comparison video. My favorite tones were from the Magnatone, Tone King and that 67 Super Reverb! I agree with you on the 64 Deluxe Reverb, however it really shined when you put the pedal in front of it (I actually preferred it over the Two Rock with the same pedal), but overall the Two Rock was better in every other way to it. I've owned two of the 64 Deluxe Reverbs over the past 6 years, always selling them after I realize they really are a one-tone pony ;-) Albeit a great one tone. Awesome work James! I have a 64 custom deluxe hand wire and a real 1965 deluxe reverb. One of the issues with the deluxe is that you have to turn the treble and the bass down to about three in order to get the mids to come up or else it will have that scoop sound. Once you do that then you’ll have a more true comparison. I will have to tell you that, I swaped the speaker out in my 64 custom and replaced it with Celestion Alnico gold and the amp just came the life, I actually prefer it over my matchless lightning and my real 59 Magnatone twilighter. Great comparison thanks for posting.
Classic reverb sig in a class of its own here in my opinion.
Really could do with some basic open chords being played more in these videos though, playing only lead lines only shows 1 side of how these amps react.
Awesome video. The Tonemaster sounded better than I thought it would. Classic Reverb Signature was lovely. No dogs in the group.
On the subject of length... it isn't about "how long"... it's about content. Does what you're saying educate me and can I find relevance between what's coming out of your mouth and what's coming from those speakers. You are educating me and there is relevance that I can hear and understand. UA-cam is a fickle place.... bore me and I'm gone in a click.... teach me/show me something and I'll be back. Keep them coming....

Great video the best for me would be that you released both formats, short and long so I will be watching the long the first time and the short for careful listening, keep up the good work, I know it takes a lot of time to make but it is so good and instructive!

As a bit of an ampoholic since teenage years, I must say, this is great! And I played it all the way through to help you with the algo ;). Apologies for the long comment, but as it was a long vid...
As with mixing, listening at 85 - 95 dB allows you to hear more detail, even if some of the bigger amps need more room/ sound pressure to "breathe". Many of these (and many of my favorite amps) are designed for stages and not for home or small studios (the Tone King Ironman II or an old variac is my favorite way of knocking down the volume from some of the bigger/louder amps).
Regarding long-form video: Hard question to answer. In our Tik Tok world, that does mean more flitting in and out by viewers. So hard to say.
Regarding the amps:
Not with you on the Two Rock versus the Deluxe Reverb TBH: The '64 DR is rounder and deeper, but I love the scooped Blackface sound. We all have different ears and biases I know, and I play different styles of music from you.
ToneKing Royalist sounds lovely.
For Super Reverb and friends: I wish you could somehow audition either a Fat Jimmy Jefferson or a Divided by 13 FTR 37, but with hard-to-find boutique amps, auditioning often means "buy and try" which isn't really tenable. I'm not a huge fan of the TR Reverb: your '67 Super has depth and, erm, "mojo" that the TR lacks. SR with the Shanks is killer for what you are playing. TR with the Shanks sounds very good and balanced though.
Magnatone sounds great.
Trainwreck: Very nice (EL84-based /13 amps do that for me)

Earasers ear plugs help out a lot; you can get them in multiple sizes. That way you can play higher volume and listen to the play back at comfortable levels to avoid damage. Thanks for the upload.

Great video, Listening up on some good moneys worth of monitors your recording really showcased the differences. In regards to the Marshall stuff, I did think the JTM sounded more like an old Marshall - a more familiar sound if you surround yourself in that music constantly. That said, I might've preferred the toneking - but it'll take me a bit to swallow that haha.

Hello James. Some stunning amps there. My favourite had to be the royalist. It nails the vintage marshall tones and my favourite fenderish amp was the two rock, but that royalist foe me is something special. In recwnt years ive really enjoyed the marshall clean tones my other favorite amp of the momnet is the tone king imperial mk 2. Think im becoming a bit of a tone king fan boy. Juatvwiah they had an effecta loop. In saying that with the imperial, i didn't think it needed due to the reverb and tremolo being incorporated. Stunning amps
I enjoy watching your amp demos. Played thru a few nice amps - Morgan RCA 35R, AC40 Delux, Matchless Clubman 35R, Dr Z Maz38, Mesa Boogie Single Recto verb 50. These videos help inspire the next amp purchase. Lately I have been leaning towards going Fractal digital for portability, practice, and the plethora of tones available. But of course, there is nothing digital exactly matches a tube amp running hot enough to melt a grill cheese sandwich, spinning your electric meter, and while punishing the neighbors, wearing ear plugs.

Speaker s make a huge difference. I have a fender vibro king. A amp a lot of people like ,but I thought it was little flabby I swapped in s tone tubby alinco and ceramic made a huge difference
***Two rock vintage deluxe compared to 64 deluxe reverb sounds like you put a blanket over the speaker. Deluxe reverbs wins. Hands down.
***JTM 45 vs 59 Bassman vs Tone king Royalist… Royalist takes it in the 64👍
*** shanke sounds better with the Royalist- 1970
*** 67 Super Reverb vs Tone Master super reverb step Rock classic reverb… the 67 takes the win! With the Shanks in front the ‘67 super reverb sounded best.
*** Victoria silver sonic vs magnatone … the Victoria Sliver sonic sounded beat to my ears.
If I had to pick two amps that win here:

Ha - It’s just too complex in such a long video to then make sure i have every pickup combination on every amp and make sure i edit them all in - just simpler with a strat to stick to mainly neck when i’m not using fuzz. This took 3 days as it was! But with a les paul i more naturally change pups all the time anyway so in the next vid, lp based, i will be!

I am really interested in seeing the video you will do comparing the super reverb with the CRS with a 4x10 cab! It would be also really interesting to have your feedback about the various version of the CRS (100/50W 40/20W or 50W tube rectified). Last but not the least…why not a video to evaluate the TR studio signature? is a 35W…just right the super reverb!!!

I was going to give an objective synopsis but even as someone happy to write at length, I couldn’t this time. To be fair to
myself I’ve currently got COVID and this video is HUGE. I haven’t got the will power required to write at length right now 😂
That said by the end of the video (which I enjoyed very much thank you), I started to realise I liked different amps/sections at different times. The mics and UA-cam are just giving us a partial (& compressed) story of what you experienced in the room. When comparing such a high caliber of amps over the UA-cam format it’s really hard. I will say the Magnatone openness combined with overdrive pedal was special in the way it presented a tone that remained very open but full of rich texture. So if I had to pick one that’s my mood for today 😊

I'm totally with you on the Vintage Deluxe being "better" than the 64ri, bigger transformer and more open, sounded better to me anyway. Think the bassman and the 45 needed to be up louder to really shine. My favourites were the Vintage Deluxe and the original Super, but there were no "bad" sounds at all. Just a matter of taste.

Great... Now I can hear the two rock Delux is the boss. On volume. Last night I was playing a wedding and at sound check the owner of the venue was walking around with a sound meter. (A Hardcore one) the whole band out the front had be at under 90db at the back of the room. It was impossible an absolute joke.
The royalest also sound insane. I have a imperial it's pretty good, don't love the way the amp drives. (Great with pedals though) This sounds amazing

Interestingly, even thought your experience while playing the Fender Deluxe wasn't so great as when playing the Two Rock, the Fender still sounded great here. It's just a type of tone I enjoy more.

My guess is that with some time and fiddling, you could find quite a bit of commonality in the tones these amps produce. But that’s not the point, is it? The point is that each amp really does “want” to do its own thing. The way you shot this really accentuated that.
Yes absolutely, ultimately a lot of amps are based off a few early designs. But you’re right, an amp seems to want to lean a certain way!
Vintage Deluxe and FSR. For what it is though... methinks I'll be after a Tone Master FSR on the second hand market. I'm a broke guy anyway and spend most of my time playing through Amplitube 5. Thanks for showcasing all of those amps.

I have the Super Reverb Tone Master. Bought it for $700. Crazy. I have had several of these amps, I am still searching. Lately I have bought couple Mesa's. The California Tweed and the Express. Still searching for the "One".
I probably will never be able to afford any of these amps /: it blows my mind how one person has so many premium amps
Hey James. This a jewel of a video. You can’t find these comparisons anywhere on the net. Not with same room and mics etc. question…I had a boutique deluxe reverb that was muddy unless the bass and treble were both about 7 or above. Seems your deluxe is pretty scooped at middle settings. Is this the guitar or is the deluxe just that scooped? If so I want one.
I’d say a mix of both - the guitar is reasonably wiry but the amp is definitely v scooped too

The 64 Deluxe Reverb sounds better than the Two Rock and I have a Two Rock Signature Combo. It pains me to say it. I liked the Royalist the best of all the amps. Great work.

This is a great video to me because I'm much more into amps than I am guitars. I have four really good guitars and don't even want any more but I'm always wanting more amplifiers.

I thought the Vintage Deluxe doesn’t have the warmth of the 64 Deluxe. I nite you have the bass on the bassman all the way down. What??? Love the Tone King very versatile. I never use pedals always straight in so no effects loop doesn’t bother me in the least. Still watching the video mare comments later.
Yeah man that bassman is v bassy, as you might expect!! If you have the volume high you HAVE to have the bass on zero otherwise it will drain everything else out but tbf i hadn’t played this amp quietly before and didn’t think about the bass right then but i imagine it wouldn’t have been better with more bass as it was dark anyway

My opinion- and only my opinion- I'll keep a running comment until the end of the video so I can opinion on each section:
1. Deluxe Reverb wins over the Two Rock in both instances to me- both with and without the pedal. The Two Rock just didn't sound great to me at all- too thin and trebly altogether- so we disagree
2. JTM45 vs Bassman- the Bassman was "slightly" more harmonically rich to my ear- but they were of course very very similar- both would sound better with some reverb ;-) Tone King Royalist- sounded like the JTM45 and Bassman would have sounded above the low levels you had them set at ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but with the attenuator it really shines- sounds like a proper cranked vintage amp should- just lower volume! And yes- absolutely loved the JTM and Bassman with the Shanks in front- The Bassman really shined there for me- very SRVesque tone. Again the Tone King sounded great- but was set so much brighter (or is brighter) that it wasn't really a comparison- just very different. All in- I wanted to hear more Bassman altogether. Was disappointed when the Tone King started getting played. ;-)
3. Ahh- that Super Reverb- already just clean it sounds outstanding- "spiritual experience" is right at those levels- still gets a growl but just beautiful! The Tone Master- yeah- can't say because being in the second input just isn't going to push the front of the amp the same way- it will stay very clean- by design! I have both amps too- the vintage is superior in every way- except it's too loud to play pretty much anywhere- but glorious none the less- Two Rock again- failed to impress me- just too clean for me- lacks character- in the first couple of secs of the Vintage Super Reverb- It sounded crazy good- the Two Rock- not so much. So far- I'd keep the Super Reverb- looking forward to the followup video- The Tone Master sounded MUCH better with the Shanks in it- of course- because it was being pushed properly- Two Rock disappointed me again with the Pedal- I guess I'm just not a Two Rock guy
4. Victoria Silver Sonic reminded me of the Two Rock - Magnatone was much warmer to my ears and had some growl at the low end so I liked it better actually- Pedals in front- same impressions-
OK I watched till the end- It is a lot to take in- but I think partly because your "noodling" more then actually playing songs or even chords- your single note lines are nice- but that was an hour of them so... you know- maybe for a video in this format write some songs that actually have chord work in them too? Actually I think that is especially important in a video like this- for us to hear some chord tones and how rich and defined the chords are in each amp. The Hendrix E chord from time to time doesn't count ;-) Also- and not to sound like a a$$hole- but maybe a different key then E from time to time? Otherwise love the format, playing and tones you're getting- there's a reason I'm subscribed even if this last comment sounded mean- it's not meant to be.
All in- keep the vintage Super Reverb- it sounded awesome even at those volumes.
All valid points and well taken but the point is to play something similar on each amp and the choice for THIS video was open E hendrix/srv style… my previous amp video was tuned to open A with a capo at the 2nd so it isn’t like every video is the same. If i start changing keys in the middle or do different things on different amps i’ll just get comments about that so I can’t please everyone so I just play what I feel and want to with that guitar for that video - hope that makes sense. Eg the next vid is on a les paul, 12 amps and a slow blues to a backing track.. in G! How adventurous of me 😂 cheers 👍🏼 - the only thing i didn’t agree with was your deluxe vs vintage reverb analysis - to me the vintage deluxe was full, warm and rich and the deluxe reverb stiff and lifeless but ymmv and that’s all good
@@JamesOnGuitar Definitely all good! I think a lot of what sounds good and doesn't is just UA-cam's quality and recording vs- in-the-room experience. I can get my right sounding SOOOO good in practice at home- then the minute I"m playing live with the band everything has to be changed just to be heard within the mix- normally I have to really boost the mids like crazy- and that tone is never good sounding back at home- on it's own- so it's all also just what sounds good to you! I like the idea of doing these to a backing track too- looking forward to it!
Most piano-bell and direct tone delivered the 64. And that is the Fender mark for strat and tele.R.Young used it. Good enough for me,by the way you play DR with trebles on 6 and bass on 4, not both on 4.
1- All the amps (suprisingly) sound muddy (as if the guitar tone knob is around 5 ) 2. Wouldn´t be better to record just one loop trough all the amps so we can hear real difference?
Definitely was on full (the tone knob) - i do like a slightly darker tone than some but i don’t think this was muddy at all. And no, that wouldn’t tell me anything about how the amp feels to play, or its dynamics so wouldn’t be useful to me - comparing amps is a lot about feel as the feel influences how you play
@@JamesOnGuitar I agree for the feel, but for the sound I think the exact same playing trough different apms should expose some tonal differencies
@@TheRezus35 i just don’t find it to be that musical of a test tbh. The playing can differ per amp, because of the amp, and to me that is more important. Ultimately the loop will favour whatever amp it was recorded through. Music isn’t played out of context like that, not for me anyway. I get your point but i’m just not the guy for that sort of test 👍🏼

yeah but all the cool kids stick with analogue ;) i already live most of my life connected to digital things - don't we all! give me valves and transistors and resistors and lots of switches any day. also, get your ears tested... bro... ;) also - if you are using a tone where a 335 can sound like a les paul or a strat then i'm not sure anything matters at all tbh so you go for it, kiddo
