  • I made my son and future kids a step stool for him them to safely help mom out in the kitchen. The design is collapsible and easy to store when not in use. You can find plans on my website listed below. The project cost me around $100 CND to build.

Thanks for putting this up. My daughter loves it.
For those thinking of building it, there are a few things/gotchas I learned along the way:
    1) you're going to need piano or continuous hinges. I used one 72" that I cut into four pieces to join the corners and 2 30" to join the slats
    2) Careful where you route. The piano hinges almost exactly 3/4". If you route the edges where the hinges go, you're going to need to have problems
    3) I didn't have a drill press or forstner bits. I used a spade bit that tore out a bunch on the back side. I should have used a sacrifical board
    4) Since I didn't have a press, I didn't trust drilling through more than one board at a time. I should have created an MDF template. I'd recommend that if you're in my situation
    5) Don't eyeball placement of your piano hinges. I tried that and it came out wobbly the first time. I ended up measuring 1/4" from the top
    6) The piano hinges blocked the seat. You may want to consider where you place the piano hinges so that the seat can slide between the hinges. I ended up just cutting mine so it could slide between the piano hinges
    7) I used a $40 4'x8' 3/4 sheet of plywood instead with plenty left over. It was easier and cheaper than trying to buy boards.
    8) If there's a slight bend in your plywood, it's ok. Just make sure you assemble the legs in a manner so that you're using the cross bars and hinges to pull/push it straight accordingly.

Do you have a lumber shopping list? I Looked at your plans, and had thought you made this from plywood.. But I see that is not the case now.

Sure would be nice to have a single measurement or instruction so others could build this instead of just watching you do it
