Lag bolts are meant to be pre drilled with a hole the same diameter as the shank of the bolt. He’s done it correctly. It will in fact give a stronger bite as it does not split the fibres of the wood. This is why most common wood screws have a self cutting tip. ALWAYS pre drill lag bolts.
Why are thery not a stainless still bracket that can put down in the ground and another attacked to each leg. Then, they mate uo with leg bolts on r whatever..what keeps the feet from rotting away
But not as accessible for those who want to make the effort, but aren’t time served joiners. Not everyone has the experience to go down that route. Instead of picking fault it’d be great if you saw the effort and care this guy put into building his kids some swings they could enjoy now.

I wouldn't pre drill them. You taking away some of the holding abilities.of the lag screw. Nice job Especially by yourself.
Agree. Maybe use a small drill bit so the lag bolts can really bite into the wood. Or just use lag bolts with washers and nut on the other side.
