I'm glad the videographer gave ample time to Joe Morello's work here. He drove this music in such a effective way, never calling attention to himself, but this piece is all the more exciting for his artistry.
If there was ever a group a jazz quartet that worked so well together it has to be Brubeck four musical voices blending so well mark his down as historic jazz
I always admired Eugene Wright's bass playing from my first hearing the Columbia vinyl album Jazz Impressions of Eurasia in 1958. I met Dave Brubeck backstage at a concert in San Diego when I was still a kid in awe of his quartet. Paul Desmond had horrible ring around the collar from being on the road and having the strap of his saxophone around the neck of his dress shirt.
I attended this concert in Helsinki/Helsinfors. It was a Jamboree with dozens of the world's best jazz artists including (Rahsaan) Roland Kirk. It was an unforgetable evening.
The original is nice, also. During Desmond's solo, Dave looked as if he heard something he had never heard before. This is the mark of a good musician, when other musicians respect what you do. Good tune, good musicians, well executed!!
Yeah, I know what you mean, and that's funny too, but this solo was way better with a many-pronged approach to me... Dave seems to have had an energized feeling inspired by Paul's solo. Desmond quoting 'Put on a Happy Face" and something else.... giant brains here.
WOW. I’ve followed Joe Morello for many years, was a student of his. I’ve never seen him play a white marine pearl kit (always champagne sparkle with a Supraphonic snare drum). This kit is gorgeous !
Joe Morello on a back line kit or, very possibly, the kit of one of the other drummers at the concert. As usual, he makes the kit sound just like his own Ludwig Super Classic. A great rendition of this chart.
2:35ish someone goes "Ya!" I love this about jazz- it's like they hear the songs and the ideas of their fellow band-mates at the same time as the audience. They know the chords and stuff, but it's in their freedom to improvise what they want, so it's always like... "What's he gunna play over THIS next juicy change...?"
It is said that Buddy Rich never dared to play a drum battle with Joe. He knew that this small shy guy could wipe the floor with any other drummer in the world.
Rather certain this tune is based on "How Deep Is The Ocean". I may be incorrect as I am a drummer and not a chord guy. Still, love the group and their treatment of song, and a big fan of Joe Morello, a most magnificent drummer/musician. May he Rest In Peace (che lui resti con Il Signore).
This was probably the only time Joe Morello used a Marine Pearl Ludwig drum kit. Silver Sparkle was his preferred finish. And another rarity; two floor toms. Morello normally used only one.
Surprised that Joe is using just one cymbal here, more often it seemed he had the two crash plus the ride. Shows that he could play the bare bones drum kit and make it swing.
Meanwhile I think, Dave never would have been a genius like he was, when he had had „classic“ piano education. Sometimes it cuts creativity, I’m quite shure.
Take notes kids ; here’s a perfect example of precision, symbiosis & class.
These dudes were absolute pros.
Once there was a drummer named Morello, ...just once.
He really was magnificent
It's like the drums were truly a part of him. Thats how seamless his playing is.
@@CraigStCyrPlus But even he made little mistakes...dropped sticks, etc, but he covered himself so well that it was almost impossible to detect.
@@paulpeeters2356 - ahem.... is magnificent!
I remember seeing these at our National Theatre,I believe 1966.Musician Heaven.

These gentlemen are the definition of cool!
I may beg to differ. It's COOL.
Possibly The Greatest Quartet of there time here
And now and beyond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*their* time.
If there was ever a group a jazz quartet that worked so well together it has to be Brubeck four musical voices blending so well mark his down as historic jazz
My word, indeed.
Yes, Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond were a match made in heaven....
You don't know what this quartet is capable of until you see their live shows. My God, Brubeck here almost killed me.
Don't I know it Brother!
My grandad got to jam with Dave back at 60's in Finland
Sad to say Eugene Wright is the only one still alive out of this magnificent quartet.
He's no more with us :(

Joe Morello influenced me more than any other drummer that I Idolized. Joe had it all. True Class Act!
That left hand!
incredible performance!

I always love watching Morello, the light touch of a surgeon, RIP

This blew my mind as a drunk. Revisiting this with clarity is significant.
They are so alive up there, forever. This is their gift to us.

Eugene Wright - "There goes Dave again, Joe"
Joe Morello - "Yup, just keep playing, he'll tire himself out"
Very true and very funny !
Yeah, I know what you mean, and that's funny too, but this solo was way better with a many-pronged approach to me... Dave seems to have had an energized feeling inspired by Paul's solo. Desmond quoting 'Put on a Happy Face" and something else.... giant brains here.
And Joe, just before he starts playing, scratches the back of his head, thinking....? Or nothing? Thank you, Joe!

around 2:14 when Dave is staring at Paul and goes “YEAH!” they were locked in tight. That run was genius, “yeah!” is right!!
Class and quality. Even when I was 7 I knew that these guys were the real deal. Thanks for posting this gem.
Joe Morello on a back line kit or, very possibly, the kit of one of the other drummers at the concert. As usual, he makes the kit sound just like his own Ludwig Super Classic. A great rendition of this chart.
I believe his kick drum was 2" bigger than the one he's playing here
Amazing grooving artistry. RIP and thanks to all of you for your gift to us.
These guys made inspiring music - such great ambassadors for jazz!
Bass Gene Wright ;
Drums Joe Morello ;
Saxo alto Paul Desmond ;
Piano Dave Brubeck
Amazing. Perfect timing of each and all, they clearly are enjoying themselves...I love Brubeck's 'yeah' at Desmond and at himself.
+BlikeNave I think that was Dave himself who exclaimed "Ya!"....would make sense because he had the utmost respect/appreciation for Desmond
+Joel Martin Yeah, it was Brubeck...
I so love this. I love Dave Brubeck's slight bounce as he plays. He's workin' it!
Jazz, it never gets old.
superb. This is music!
Thanks for this very very good post......No one like these dudes on the planet......
Extremamente magnifico!
Great Performance..Famous & Great Old Masters..🔥
Someone put this version on Spotify!! This is amazing 👏
Somente músicos de primeira qualidade. Muito bom.
Paul's wonderful quotes, "Put on a Happy Face" at 1:52......
lOVE IT! Pop music seems to be better the further in the past
I would give my right arm for Morello's left hand. ;-D
And my left arm for his right hand. Better make the best of what I have..... and dream
It is said that Buddy Rich never dared to play a drum battle with Joe. He knew that this small shy guy could wipe the floor with any other drummer in the world.
Awesome...special quartet!
Majestic!
GRAZIE
This Quartet is just simply Amazing.
Excelente melodia by Brubeck Quartet.
1 million likes to these song!
Once there was a piano player named Brubeck,...just once.
sublime
As beautiful as Take Five!
Masterpiece
And I would say the older it gets, the nicer it sounds.
How can one one get cooler then these men
Greattest song!
Supergrupo de responsabilidade!!
Splendid ….
Brubeck and Morello were just so much better live. With they'd have record studio albums like this.
All musicians are owner of special performance.
Really a great performance.

Whoa. Great catch there. They are mighty similar, and I think you may be right!
Woah!
Wow!!!!
O piano obrigando o contrabaixo a evoluir nas notas. Legal!
This was probably the only time Joe Morello used a Marine Pearl Ludwig drum kit. Silver Sparkle was his preferred finish. And another rarity; two floor toms. Morello normally used only one.
Damn get em Dave ! 2:52
Classic!
Absolute toe tapper!
Surprised that Joe is using just one cymbal here, more often it seemed he had the two crash plus the ride. Shows that he could play the bare bones drum kit and make it swing.
His solo on Take Five, he had one cymbal. There's a video, shows a still of the recording session.
After that solo, every other is just redundant.
Joe could play air and make it sound right
You only need a Bare bones Kit,if your a Proper Drummer Like Joe here
@@patriciajustice9795 Brilliant!
Meanwhile I think, Dave never would have been a genius like he was, when he had had „classic“ piano education. Sometimes it cuts creativity, I’m quite shure.
How in heck could seven folk vote down to this video?
At the beginning of the piece it sounds like Brubeck is riffing on "Almost Like Being In Love".
Talk about bein' in the pocket.
4.55 You think it's over? No, I'll go for another round.
l'unico batterista che rimarca il tempo in levare costantemente.., prima di lui solo Max ROACH :!!!!! 🧚♂️🧚♀️🧚♂️🥰
I'm surprised the riot fuz wasn't called in wot with all the thumb twiddling and carrying on.

These cats were the epitome of cool...morello was the coolest
