My drummer Dad loved Joe Morello, so I grew up on the Brubeck Quartet and Joe's incredible solos. Sticks, brushes, hands, he did it all. His fills are amazing and what he does with a simple kit is incredible. The best.

Joe Morello, just brilliant. Was bought up listening to modern jazz as a young boy in the 50s. I was always into good drummers, but Joe Morello was always my favourite. Like they said. A drummer other drummers listened to. Blues for Joe shows he's brilliant technic and speed.

The bass player, Gene Wright, extended his bass solo and ignored Joe when he said something, so Morello just launched into this incredible extended solo and Gene finally had to give up and leave the stage. You can see Joe turning around and smiling as Gene leaves.

Joe Morello, as much as he is respected, is probably one of the most underappreciated drummers of all time. He has every bit of the chops as Buddy Rich, and arguably more, but in my opinion, Morello is a tastier and more interesting player. The guy was a genius. Pure genius.
One final thought... listen to some John Bonham solos with Led Zeppelin where Bonzo put down his sticks and played with his hands. Bonham was greatly influenced by Morello and Louie Bellson. If you listen to some early 1960's Bellson solos, especially with his double bass set up, you can hear licks that Bonham took inspiration from.

There's one thing all drummers and I mean "all" wish they could master, it's to use the left hand fingered technique, which Joe had flawlessly mastered. He was playing tripples with his left hand while keeping the tempo without losing a beat during the song. Those are the reasons why Joe is simply one of the most sophisticated drummers of all times. Morello is an inspiration for many more to come

" And he told me " He is joe Morello, for me is the best of all..." . After I grown up and I appreciated people from every kind of music like Bonham, Rich, Gadd, Beauford, Portnoy... and now that I listen again Mr Morello I can say " Yes my old man...you' re right"

I think Joe didn't get the recognition he deserved because he wasn't "flashy". He rarely appeared on TV shows and only did solo work after the Brubeck Quartet broke up. He and Eugene Wright did play on Simon and Garfunkel's "59th Street Bridge Song". His brush work is unmistakable.

I'm a DBQ fan of nearly 70 years and I never saw Morello perform. What a special clip of this genius, hard, hard at work. Thank you for posting. It is interesting to reflect on how exceptional talent translates into fame. I think if Dave hadn't recruited Joe from Marian McPartland (who I love), Joe would have drummed out his days at Hickory House. Instead, his genius is showcased around the world due to those great DBQ trips abroad. Dawson, deeply admired by peers, sort of sequestered as a teacher. Roach's fame came with the popularity of bebop, of which he was an elder. All three much better talents than the more famous Krupa or Rich.

Joe always sounded like he is caressing the drums so the music would come out on its own. Even playing them with his finger tips is hypnotizing. Musician all the way. I've never heard or seen anything negative about Joe. He showed everyone respect.
Buddy always sounded like he was attacking his drums and forcing the sound to come out and surrender. I always heard machine guns and cannons from him. Not so much a musician as just a percussionist. There are many rumors of Buddy screaming at his band after every performance. They were always young and the turnover rate was high.
