  • Footage of an Airbus A321 plane approaching a runaway at Skiathos Airport has captured the aircraft skimming over beachgoers around the perimeter of the airport.
The facility has a short runway due to the geography of the Greek island meaning pilots have to approach lower than they regularly would for longer runways.

This particular Airport and its landing approach have long been a visual and tourist attraction
As a child was raised at the top end of Monahan Ave Rockdale late 1940's to mid 1950's a rocky hill site and on the immediate approach to Mascot was much the same as this
The most magnificent plane to watch coming in with wheels down that you could almost reach up and touch was the super constellation in its shiny glory with the screaming turbo-propped Pratt and Whitney piston engines
This memory is forever etched in my mind

I am a pilot, sometimes getting low is priority to landing. Edit : You would feel the thrust from the flaps pushing air.. the jet engines themselves at that point are virtually idle, no thrust required. Notice no wind, so full run way required to slow the aircraft down. An air craft of this size is approx 60 -75 tons. Takes a bit of stopping from 220 -300 km/hr. Landing speed over ground 250 ,-300 km / hr

  • @nikherder9565

most of the air coming from commercial jet engines is bypass air, something like 1:9. meaning 90% of the thrust coming from commercial jet engines does not actually go through the combustion stage. think of the massive fan at the front as a huge propeller pushing most of the air around the combustion chamber. the higher the bypass ratio the more efficient these engines get. but higher bypass means the engine get larger in size. this is why commercial jet engines are so much larger than military fighter jets (which focus on performance not efficiency). so no the jetblast from a commercial jet would not really be hot on average, only initially out of the combustion chamber which you would have to be very close, so close you would easily be thrown in the air long before u have to worry about the heat

Not enough available runway length for an A380 to make a safe landing at Skiathos (LGSK), especially loaded with passengers & cargo.
A test pilot with an empty A380 with hardly any fuel might succeed but the typical runway length before an A380 will consider a safe landing is 3000m/9800ft, let alone a much larger AN225.
LGSK Rwy 01/19 is only 1628m/5341ft with uneven terrain that even midrange jets like an A321 find it really challenging to land there.
They could try, but more likely end up ditching a really expensive plane into the sea killing/injuring people as they ran out of stopping distance even with max autobrakes & favourable winds.
The other issue is takeoff runway distance which again is too short.
They make up for it by flying many flights throughout the day, especially during the summer tourist season

Former flight attendant here. We had a diversity pilot who his fellow pilots called "Green Wheels" because he had skidded off the runway into the grass quite a few times. He liked to fly the Grand Cayman flights. Problem was, the runway was pretty short and he'd freak out when he had to land. He'd hit the brakes so hard that they had to stock extra brakes at the GCM Airport to fix the plane so it could fly back from GCM. I know this because one afternoon he brought in the plane I was supposed to fly out on. But they discovered that they had run out of brake parts and I had to wait until new parts could be flown it.

      @johnathanasiou9284 2 роки тому

Too expensive & impractical as they'd have to spend too much money trying to reclaim land from the sea located at both ends of runway 01/19.
There are restrictions & the largest which can fly into Skiathos (LGSK) is a Boeing 767 & plenty A32x & 737 planes fly there constantly.
Most Greeks would question the need to even extend when other, smaller aircraft happily fly in having done so for years without incident & they'd likely cite Princess Juliana (TNCM) in Sint Maarten & Madeira/Funchal (LPMA) in Portugal with similar, short runways.
Greece has a stack of short runway airports ie Samos (LGSM), Corfu/Kerkira (LGKR) & a host of others who'd also ask for a "handout" if LGSK got funding.
If the Greek government dared spend this kind of money on a runway extension for LGSK considering the passenger movement demand there & Greece isn't exactly rolling in spare cash & they have far more urgent infrastructure spending requirements ie military due to the Aegean rattling's from Erdogan & so many other pressing more needs, this would be political suicide especially with national elections due in 2023.
What likely happened with the WizzAir A321 was either windshear on final approach causing the plane to dip lower than normal, or they mistimed something but either way this isn't a show stopper as their radio altimeter tells pilots how high off the ground the plane is, plus they do this regularly.
It looks scary to a layman but perfectly normal to experience ATP pilots who have done this thousands of times on short runways globally.
Remember, Greek citizens got smashed on their electric (ΔΕΗ) bills with some copping 6000 euro all to pay off the national debt & you think voters will take too kindly to wastage of more money from politicians!

Statistics show that the drive to the airport is so much more dangerous than the actual plane ride.
That's why insurance companies sell riders with extra causes offering to pay double indemnity payouts for catastrophic due to loss of life & limb occurring while being transported on/in airplanes, trains, ferries, & trains; regularly scheduled, public, ticketed pay-to-ride transport is actually the lowest risk for accident or death. That's right. The double indemnity is the insurance salesman's low risk tool to sell their product as having greater value. People are more likely to be hurt or die in their own bathroom, kitchen, or within two miles of their home than anywhere else.
Think about how many car accidents occur just in your town or city each & every day, each year? Think think about how many plane crashes occur in that same area plus the perimeter surrounding your nearest airport? Compare those numbers. Common sense & a dab of logic reveals that the societal fear of plane crashes is actually a created reality. And these ever increasing boundaries, checkpoints, & security measures are more of a psychological programming than actually protecting anyone's safety.
The authorities near this airport allow people in that area because tourists spend money while visiting the area. And for the time being, due to space constraints & more focus on the generation of wealth, they aren't erecting anything more than a six foot fence with some barbed wire at the top.
Also, did you notice that despite the plane seeming so close & the shadow kicking one plume of dust, not a single person physically ran in terror from the plane's approach or passover? Not a single person threw themselves onto the ground. Not a single person, not one. Apparently the camera angle makes this scene more ominous than it appears.
Everyone seems for the most part to be business as usual, a day out at the beach, with one guy with his tripod ready & his camera filming the plane's arrival & another guy seeming to turn away as if this is all a sound stage & he is an actor, an extra, performing on cue for the camera.
Additionally, the crowd's understated reaction makes the scene almost seem like a product of CGI. Eerily so.
      But I digress.
Geesh! Maybe the Nanny State shouldn't allow YOU to get into &/or drive a car because it is too dangerous? You know, Big Brother is watching & apparently you love being subject to safety measures. Oooh, awwwwaaa, I'm scared of what might have possibly have occurred the scary picture, 'make it stop, protect those people, forbid them from...', suddenly a brand new regulation in order to protect.
Next thing you know, babies will have training wheels so that
      they can't possibly fall down.

    Salvation prayer
Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe You sent your son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for my sins, and the sins of the whole world. I believe He was buried and rose from the dead 3 days later. I confess with my mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in my heart that You rose Him from the dead. Today, i repent for my sins known and unknown, and accept Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. In Jesus name I pray, amen
