That moment with Ardbert and the axe is absolutely the most impactful moment I've ever experienced in gaming. I get tingles every time I watch. Nothing in games has even come close to comparing to that moment for me (aside from other moments later in the same story :D)

Shadowbrinbgers is definitely among my top. I have a hard time clearly stating "bests" watch alot of anime, read alot of manga, read alot of novels. (that is to say, I have many things I enjoy massively, hard to choose a "best" from all) A game ending that really hits me in many ways is well the "main" ending to Chrono Trigger.
The sheer skill it took to take the Ascians from 'Hate sink villains' to 'tragic victims of circumstance driven beyond all rationality by unspeakable horror' in the course of a single expansion... Emet-Selch will deservedly go down as one of the greatest villains in history.
Ardbert IS you. You and him are parts of the same soul, split across different shards. When he offered you his axe, he rejoined you. Remember, always consider: Has your journey been worth it, despite the sacrifices made along the way?

56:07 I mean, Zenos is a direct descendant of Emet. Likely by awakening the Resonant powers that allowed him to take over Shinryu in StB, the Ascian blood lying dormant within him was stirred a bit. I also still find it absolutely hilarious that upon seeing Zenos return in a different body, Elidibus just fricking noped out despite still having Zenos's body in addition to his own ascian powers.
Also am I the only one who gets the ASMR scalp tingle when 'Who Brings Shadow' kicks in? A moment of sheer storytelling perfection where music, art, and emotion become one.
Things I love to point out because there's so much going on through this ending to miss your first time through. In Rak'tika, Emet recounts the tale from the mural and says "This is our story. Our history." In the confrontation, Ardbert says, through the WoL, "This world is not yours to end. This is our story. Our future." Go back to the trailer "Weary wanderer, you've not fight left to fight. No life left to live." ;) Yes, Hythlodaeus says WoL & Ardbert share the same soul and it's one unmistakable to him and Emet. The last glimpst in the light of an Ancient was what Emet saw, suggesting you & Ardbert are souls of an Ancient. Though to be fair, that's a reason Emet doesn't see killing entire worlds as murder. From his perspective, he's gathering shards of fragmented souls to recreate them in their original, whole form. Emet says to drop titles and pretense and reveal your true faces to one another. Most boss fights have a title like "Titan, Lord of Crags" but this fight has no title. Just "Hades" - the game itself dropped titles and pretense. Emet's been carrying the weight of an extinct civilization, desperately trying to restore it, but his deeper fear is that they, their culture, their achievements, and their struggles will be lost and forgotten. Since we first saw him, he's walked with a slouch and hunched shoulders. He said repeatedly he didn't lie in Shadowbringers, that he was genuinely interested in the WoL and the Scions as being worthy to join him. Even the Final Days dungeon and fight against him is something of a test and you passed it. When you beat him, he's standing up straight when he implores you to remember the Ancients, that they once lived. The weight is lifted from his shoulders. It's not his burden to bear anymore. He's not just admitting you won, but he's passing on his burden and entrusting it to you to carry on that memory of them. On the beach, just as it's fading out and G'raha says "Nevertheless" you can see Urianger on the left of the screen floating in the water. He did wash up. 🤣 When Ardbert is returning to the Crystarium, his axe is no longer stained in blood. He's forgiven himself, his sins washed away as it were. (Also, do all the role quests in Shadowbringers, each one is related to Ardbert's group). Last note: Zenos says he will not allow petty wars and cowardly weapons to ruin his hunt. That brings the time travel story to conclusion. The trailer showed the Warrior of Light defeating Elidibus-as-Zenos in combat. That was the timeline we saw a glimpse of that leads to the Eighth Umbral Calamity where the Scions and WoL die to Black Rose. Essentially, the WoL defeated Elidibus-as-Zenos and drove the Garlean Empire to desperation. They unleashed their chemical weapon Black Rose and killed countless, ultimately creating the setting necessary for the First to fall to light and rejoin the Source in a calamity. G'raha pulling the Scions and then finally affecting the WoL during the battle (to be saved by Estinien) stopped that defeat from happening, which ultimately delays the use of Black Rose. With Zenos' actions, he takes Black Rose off the board as a piece to be played. Enjoy the patches. They have stories as impactful as the base launch MSQ. There are a few moments to gut punch you and steal those tears. No shame. "I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil." - Gandalf By the end of the next expansion - yeah you gotta go through the whole whole thing - for Zenos to more fully make sense in his motivations and why he's SO obsessed with another fight.

When Emet-Selch "killed" Ryne, it was just an illusion. His whole thing was illusion magicks. And then at the end of the battle, Thancred broke through the illusion. Nobody actually got hurt.
So, im fairly certain i remmeber it being told, but when Emet confuses you with a ancient, its because he saw Azem. You sre the reincarnation of Azem after all, and Azem was one of those he called a dear friend.
