  • The Greyhound Bus Station in Norfolk closed its doors many years ago. But now, it's getting a new purpose--helping people who are experiencing homelessness.

Well they kicked out all the folks from section 8 in that area to build condo's a few years ago without really giving a dang where they were going to go (some voucher scam that somehow didn't work out....suprise!) On another note, I spent a lot of time at that station back in the day waiting for my bus. I think the closest one now is all the way in Newport News. That's at least an hour by bus from Norfolk to get there. Norfolk deserves to be underwater in 10 years pulling this BS.

They actually made a bus stop at the Amtrak train station next to the new ball field (Norfolk).... I just took a bus from there and back.... horrible ride, but made it home safe! It's not a greyhound station, but an Amtrak station....

I see nothing wrong with shelters for the truly needy, such as a Mother with young children who had been abused by her husband, the mentally ill, the elderly unable to care for themselves, etc. However, not for able bodied people. The easier it gets to give up on paying your way in life, the more people will use these "shelters". Left unchecked, before long this shelter will be packed full and the City will be looking for another facility to encourage people to give up on life. It's shelters like this, that ring true the words "killing you with kindness". "Tough love", on the other hand, makes for a robust society and less homelessness.

The problem is it's becoming increasingly harder to pay your way in life especially if you come from poverty in the first place. Wages have been stagnant since the 70s, continually shrinking due to inflation, and the price of living is skyrocketing. No sane person would rather live in one of these shelters instead of meaningfully contributing to society and having autonomy.

@@JP-lw4ci I feel your pain, however at some point we have to put our collective foot down and insist that able body people have to pay their way in society. No solution is perfect, as some people will fail, but in the long run less and less people will have to suffer the indignity of living in a shelter.
