Cultural Triangle & Hill Villages of Sri Lanka | PART 1 of the BEST Two Week Travel Itinerary

- Welcome to Sri Lanka!
In this 3 part tour of the 'Teardrop of India' (how poetic is that?!), we travel around the country in 2 weeks, encountering mist-shrouded mountains, rolling tea plantations, wildlife-rich jungles & golden beaches. The variety of landscapes in this country is astounding.
In PART 1, we visit the picturesque cultural triangle, pass through lush green mountains, experience historical colonial influence at some of Sri Lanka's tea plantations in the central highlands and hill regions, survive (joke) an iconic train ride and go off the beaten track more times than I can remember!
More specifically, we visit Dambulla, climb Sigiriya (the iconic Lion Mountain), get up at 4am to hike to the top of Pidurangala, experience the chaos in Kandy, walk through some tea plantations in the quaint colonial Nuwara Eliya and aboard the train to Ella. We then spend a magical few days in the gorgeous hill village of Ella. For all of you hiking enthusiasts, I also answer the question: "Is it better to climb Sigiriya or Pidurangala?"
Along the way we enjoy many curries and tropical fruits for breakfast, meet friendly locals and learn about Sri Lankan custom and culture! I also learn so much about travelling to Sri Lanka that I wish I'd known before departing!
Stay tuned for PART 2 where we go on safari in Yala National Park and attempt to find a Sri Lankan leopard and PART 3 where we explore and relax on Sri Lanka's beautiful rugged beaches and stay within some incredible resorts.
I’ve spent about 4 years perfecting this itinerary - we were set to go 4 years ago just before Covid hit and we had to cancel. It was a blessing in disguise because I think I’ve crafted the 2 weeks into an even better one than we initially planned! Without further ado… this is our journey and one I’d recommend to anyone with 2 weeks in this highly underrated and beautiful country.

35:37 actually 3rd class is crazy crowded most of the time, you are lucky there was not many people that time. To anyone who wants to do that train journey I always recommend the 2nd class reserved over 3rd class and even 1st class.
Wow, so we got quite lucky then! Thanks for the feedback! We had bought the 2nd class reserve online but they are not available to buy at the station. So after the mishap, we bought 2nd class (non-reserve) at the station. This meant we could still take any available seat if we wanted to but that we didn't have a designated seat obviously. We only sat down for about 45 minutes so it worked for us but this is great advice for people who want to secure a seat for the entire journey or are travelling at a busy time (eg. the weekend). 🙏
@@TheLensCapChronicles absolutely, and as I heard in the video you paid 50$ for the 2nd class reserved tickets from a random online website right? Whenever someone wants to buy tickets of this train journey through the SL railway website they are always not available. Train tickets of this train journey has become a business to some people now. There’s no way the 2nd class reserved tickets cost 50$ otherwise. It has become a scam.
Yes unfortunately we paid $50. We read that SL railway website only allows you to buy tickets more than a month from the day of the intended journey. We bought our tickets 3 weeks from the journey date through an online company recommended on some blog pages so that is why it was told to us that they cost more. I believe the situation is being exploited by some third party ticket sellers unfortunately 😔

There is no question, Sigiriya is the best, its almost the 8th wonder of the world, Sigiriya is not only the rock, Sigiriya is in the middle of an ancient city, half of which is not even excavated to this day. The water fountains in the water garden of Sigiriya are still functioning, Where else do you find 1000ds of year old functioning water fountains? 😮
If you roam arround sigiriya rock gardens, you find lots of ponds, ruins, etc that tourists miss because they forcos on the Rock itself. You also missed the stunning frescos and the mirror wall at Sigiriya.
Wow this is so interesting. I didn't realise that there was more of the city still to be excavated. We did roam around the beautiful gardens a little but I was struggling to fit everything into this video because there was so much to include! Also if you take another careful look at the video... you might see the mirror wall is included 😉 It was super impressive. Thanks for your great comment!
