We used mosquito repellant only a couple of times in the evenings when we ate dinner outside. I certainly don't recall them being much of a problem for us! Hope they behave for you!

So I wouldn't say it's imperative to book before arrival, although it definitely made me feel more at peace to have it arranged beforehand.

Don't trust ANYONE in Sri Lanka. They are very accustomed to ripping off tourists there. Big smiles, all happy, but don't be fooled, they are constantly thinking of how much you have and how little they have, and they seriously think that you owe them! "It's not fair, you are rich and I am poor. You owe me." Scammers try every angle, from extortionate tuk-tuk rates to food prices, drinks prices, room rates. If you are white there is absolutely no doubt that you are a target. Sri Lanka is not scam city, it is scam country! Beware. Thieves! This most definitely includes the police, who subsidise their income by scamming tourists. In fact, the police are the worst, because they will threaten you if you contest their claims. Dangerous people, the Sri Lankan police!
