    Good vehicle. I have Avalon hybrid, love it. Big car at 40 mpg. Toyota make best hybrids. This little thing had 5gallons that filled tank at almost half. People should start buying this kind of vehicles. Maybe we will be semi independent on fuel sometime. Toyota- good job!!!

      Juan Velez: It’s runs only for 3 miles before ICE kicks in, but charges battery fast. Also it has Atkinson cycle engine. You would get better MPGs on those engines. I would go about 540-560 miles on about 12-13 gallons.

    The Gen 3 Prius gives the low gas warning when you reach the last 50 miles of “projection to empty.” Based on how much gas goes in even after reaching zero and the total capacity of the tank. Toyota seems to factor in 1.5 gallons to compensate for human stupidity.

    • @cjaquilino
      @cjaquilino 4 роки тому

      That’s gels with my experience. I thought I was literally at zero. Bolted to the closest gas station than I filled it up…and I actually had 1.8 gallons in the tank.

      I have a C-HR 1.8 Hybrid. While driving 640 kms on the motorway (with cruise control set at 110kph, averaging 5.9 l/100) the light came on with about 44 KMs to go of fuel. At - - - on the display I filled up with Petrol. The tank is supposed to take 43 Litres. I filled up with 37.51 litres. Which means that with the 5.5 litres in the left in the tank I should have had at least another 100 kms to drive (if I continued on the motorway with no battery use). So, the light is extremely optimistic. But it still makes me panic!

      @sanjaykumarsingh1970 3 роки тому +2

      Hahahaha 🤣 ... Well said ... that is a fantastic way of putting it and I guess you are correct here. With zero miles to go you still have 1.5 gallons of gas left in your tanks. If you still don't get your car to the gas station fast ... you definitely are stupid.

    I have a 2004 (Gen II) Prius with ~170K miles on it, & the original traction battery. I don't know why it would be that much different than a Prius C aside from being a bit heavier. I've never run out of fuel as I don't care to chance the cost of (expensive?) repairs. I practice in seeing how long my Prius will go, in electric-only mode, as an exercise to maximize mileage. Of course, I turn off heavy-electric items, such as the air conditioning (this includes while in the usual/normal hybrid mode). I live in a relatively flat area, nothing more severe than an occasional very mild grade. I always get a few miles in electric-only mode (never took any serious measurements nor kept any record). On a flat surface, I can get to 40 mph before the IC engine cuts in. In the usual hybrid mode, on several occasions, I've gotten ~72 mpg. On a recent trip from the northern area of the state to the southern area, ~100 miles, I got 63 mpg. In that 170K miles I've only had 1 repair that wouldn't be something considered the usual maintenance, & that was the IC engine coolant circulation pump; for me, it was ~$350, parts & labor at the dealer. Original exhaust, original brakes. My opinion, the Toyota Prius is the best car, hands-down, that I've ever owned (& I'm 60 years old & a professional driver) & when it comes time to buy another, it'll be another Prius, or a variant. Wish it came with the rear-view camera back then... & my only complaint is the brake-turn-backup light assembly. The LED brake lights do fail after a time (mine lasted 13 years) & those can't be replaced unless one cares to do some cutting & dissecting of the LED light assembly (it's plastic-welded together). I found comparable aftermarket & replaced them myself. I also wish the fuel tank was larger, & that I knew of the plug-in variant, if it was even available in 2004. All in all, excellent engineering job, Toyota!

    Frankly, you got lucky. Prior gens of Prius would throw a code if it ran out of power and gas. That results in a tow to Toyota to have the code reset. You can’t/couldn’t just add gas and go.

  • @xanderhintz1727
    @xanderhintz1727 6 років тому +5

    Just an addition, If your prius runs out of battery and gas, you charge it or get it gas and it still has some battery left but won't start after adding gas. The computer needs a reboot and the easiest way to do this is to simply disconnect and reconnect the 12v battery in the rear passenger side of the vehicle.

  • @bwilson4web

    First off, Kudos for doing the 'forbidden experiment'. I've done similar experiments with the 2003, 2010, and 2017 Prius Prime.
    The 2003 typically went 60-70 miles, 1.2 gal., and the 2010 would go ~120 miles, 2.1 gal., on 'low fuel' warning before the engine stopped. Then use the traction battery to find a safe place to park and refuel. Using a 1 gal spare can, I had no problem starting the 2003 and 2010 although the low fuel warning requires more than a gallon to turn it off. The 2003 lit up the dash when the gas was finally gone but the 2010 power-flow indicator was the only way to tell that the gas was finally out.
    There were credible reports that after three failed restart events, a flag is set that requires either a dealer tow or power-on, reset of the 12V by disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V ground. That was the default with our Prius Prime as I had no indication when the last of the gas was gone. The Prius Prime just set the 'power steering' fault and with no motive power, I had to coast into a parking lot. After adding a gallon, the Prime would not start but a 12V, power-on restart worked perfectly.

      Owners beware, I ran out of gas in my 07 Prius & used battery to try to make it to a fuel station. Consequently I ran out of battery not 50 yards shy. After adding gas, I pushed the power button on/off sev times trying to prime the fuel pump & it caused a complete shut down or "tripped" a protective electronic shut down feature that u refer to. Had to have the car towed to Toyota service center where they charged me $330 to test, reset & charge the hybrid battery back into a functional state. You sir, should consider yourself lucky u didn't push that power button 2 more times...

    Amazing how clever the engineers were behind this design. It seems unlikely this fella realizes that MG1 will require a certain residual Traction (HV) battery capacity to rotate the engine to start it…To say nothing of the Aux battery having the remaining capacity to close the MSR’s. If I am mistaken, apologies in advance.

    Great Vid man, I have the same C model and always wanted to push it when the gas light came on. I thought maybe 35 miles of reserve, but was I wrong. 70 miles on the gas reminder is solid. The C is a beast, it definitely has won me over with fuel and it has enough power when you need it. The only really con is jot enough juice when going up a hill for a long period of time.

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna 5 років тому +1

      And presumably, by the same token, not enough traction battery space to store all of the braking energy on a long steep downhill stretch.
      I guess it's a compromise (don't want to cart around a very heavy battery all of the time).

  • @stargazer7644
    @stargazer7644 6 років тому +11

    The prius has no electric starter on the engine. It uses the traction battery and MG1 (the generator) to start the engine. If you run it out of gas and if the traction battery gets low enough it won't be able to start and you can't charge the battery. You will be truly up the creek. Not many places have the equipment needed to charge a prius high voltage battery to get the car running again. Most dealers don't have this equipment.

    • @hjeffwallace
      @hjeffwallace 6 років тому +8

      You cannot run down the traction battery on ANY electric vehicle. The cars are programmed to stop running before fully discharged. I have 3 prius, a volt, and an electric Smart. We just drive them. No worries. I ran out of fuel in the desert and limped into town. My brother accused me of trying to wean it off of gas.

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 6 років тому +2

      It may be a rare thing, but it certainly isn't impossible or they wouldn't make the service equipment to charge the batteries. Leave your vehicle sitting long enough with a discharged battery, and it'll go completely flat all by itself.

    • @vink6163
      @vink6163 6 років тому +1

      I have an old ex-taxi Prius and if I leave it sitting for a week, the traction battery shows up as flat and sometimes I get really poor acceleration until the battery has had a few minutes to charge. It wouldn't surprise me if I left the car sitting for two weeks that it wouldn't have enough juice to start the engine. However I do have an old computer UPS that runs off 200 VDC (16 SLA batteries in series) so I guess I could always hook that up to put a little charge back into the batteries, or even hook up that battery pack in parallel with the car's just to start the engine the first time.

    • @steenbergenroy
      @steenbergenroy 6 років тому +2

      if you keep turning it off and on again and it try´s to start the engine it kan drain the hybrid battery, like they say, the charging equipment is rare. in Holland we only have 1 charger for the hole county...

    • @jamesoverbeckracing487
      @jamesoverbeckracing487 6 років тому

      This is correct. Continually attempting to start the engine will run the traction battery down to a point it can no longer crank the engine. If this happens you will most likely need to find a specialist to preform a rescue charge. Most of the time the dealers can’t even do this and they will recommend replacing the battery. I have seen this happen a handful of times.

  • @metrork1
    @metrork1 3 роки тому +2

    Not a good idea at all purposely running any car out of gas. The fuel pump in the gas tank relies heavily upon the surrounding gas to keep the fuel pump cool which keeps it from over heating. On some vehicles, if ran low or out of gas, this will throw off the fuel gage reading or worst yet you will have to take the vehicle in to have the gas gage recalibrated.

    At 5:50, the hybrid system cuts out when normally at this point, the fuel engine would turn on to prevent further discharge. The big READY light next to the fuel gauge turned off to indicate this... So from that point on, you are coasting :) Power steering will still work on the normal 12V battery, but will not work optimally because there is no power left.
    This is quite a lame test, because Toyota has figured this out beforehand of course and you should have read in the manual about the READY light.

      Same deal for my 2011 Auris hybrid, it also has the Prius gen3 1.8L driveline. It has been incredibly reliable. (In fact the most reliable car i have ever owned, this includes bmw's, volvo's, a saab, a range rover)
      In all the years i have owned it it only gave me 2 problems: 1x empty keyfob battery warning on the dash + 1x worn out 12v battery. This nearly got me stranded but i was able to get a jumpstart from a friend's motorcycle battery. That way the management electronics of the car were able to boot up after which the traction battery was able to start the engine and drive home without any problem. Bought a new 12V battery and installed it myself. Problem fixed.
      Whenever the fueltank empty idiotlight starts blinking the car can still cruise 100km/60ish miles at 60mph. I never pushed it though. But it is good to know how the car will react when running out of fuel.

    It's a really bad idea to run any Toyota HSD vehicle completely out of gas, and then keep driving on the battery, and here's why:
    1. The starter motor for the gasoline engine is the 30 hp #1 motor generator in the transaxle. This is powered from the high voltage traction battery. The 12 volt battery in these cars supplies power ONLY for the car's computer's, lights, and the multifunction head unit that incorporates the stereo, hands-free phone, and GPS nav system if your Prius has one.
    That 12 volt battery has NOTHING to do with the car's gas engine starter.
    2. Once you refill the tank with gasoline, if the high voltage traction battery has been depleted to the point that the inverter can't supply at least 5 kilowatts to the MG1 motor for several seconds, you will not be able to start the gasoline engine at all, unless your is a PHEV (Prius Plug-in, Prius Prime, Rav4 Prime). If you do in fact have a PHEV, you can get the car towed to anyplace that has a 120 volt a/c outlet, and recharge the car with the charger that it came with, or plug it into a public L2 charger if there happens to be one close by. As soon as the Battery Management System shows a couple miles of range in the traction battery, that's enough to re-start the gas engine the usual way and you can then drive again.
    3. But if your Toyota HSD Hybrid isn't a PHEV, and you have exhausted the traction battery below the point where it has enough juice to spin the MG1 motor, you are up the creek: you can fill the gas tank sure, but there's no way to recharge the traction battery out by the side of the road somewhere. You will have to have the car towed to a Toyota dealership, for them to to a "rescue charge". What this entails is: Dealerships have an external charger mounted on a dolly that can be wheeled around, and it can be programmed for specific types of Toyota hybrids with the voltage and charge current appropriate for that model vehicle. The service technician unplugs the high voltage DC power cable from the battery at the point that it enters the car's inverter, and connects the charger to the battery. It takes about 30 minutes, I think, to do a rescue charge on the 1.5 kilowatt battery that's in most Prius and Corolla Hybrids, and 60 minutes to "rescue charge" a dead Sienna, Highlander, Rav4, or Camry (these have the 2.5l gas engine and a larger 2 kilowatt battery). A rescue charge isn't cheap, I was quoted $350 from Elk Grove Toyota.
    So please don't try the experiment from this video with your own car. The 1 kilowatt battery in the non-PHEV Prius and Corolla Hybrids has very little reserve power. If you run out of gas, IMMEDIATELY STOP THE CAR and turn off all the lights and power equipment until you have obtained more gasoline. You will need to have the traction battery showing at least a couple of bars to re-start the gas engine, and there's no way to recharge it other than at a Toyota dealership. And keep in mind that the 12 volt battery in these cars is very small and has only about 1/4 of the reserve capacity of the battery in a regular car o pickup truck; if the 12 volt battery drops below about 11 volts, the car's computers won't boot up when you press the Power button, and then you will have that problem to deal with, too. But at least you can re-charge the 12 volt battery at home or from another vehicle via jumper cables.

    Cool video, (except music, I really hate music in these videos). You aren't ever supposed to let gas completely drain from the gas tank, but for the sake of information of "just knowing" this real-time knowledge of information is well worth it!! One time, should not do any damage, and those parts need changed eventually anyhow, in the Prius probably every 400,000 miles! LOL. Great video!!

    V. Useful! So after fuel gone 2-3 miles is the answer and around 35mph.

      Not a good idea at all purposely running any car out of gas. The fuel pump in the gas tank relies heavily upon the surrounding gas to keep the fuel pump cool. On some vehicles, if ran low or out of gas, this will throw off the fuel gage reading or worst yet you will have to take the vehicle in to have the gas gage recalibrated.

    Very helpful video, my prius fuel indicator is faulty. The car stopped and steering wheel blocked. I had refueled 2 days before and wasn't expecting that the car ran out of gas. After viewing your video, I understood what exactly was the problem. I filled a gallon of gas but still the car wasn't running.
    Luckily I had an obd2 which I used to clear the fault and the engine started to run.
    Thanks again and keep up the good work.

      Similar for me, only my battery is worn out (ex-taxi) so the EV button only gets me 50 metres, or maybe 100 if I've just done a lot of regen braking! I have wondered whether replacing the battery would increase fuel efficiency but I'm still getting 1000km per tank and I find that pretty impressive.

      Some cars are worse about burning up fuel pumps from low fuel than others. I know GM vehicles burn up fuel pumps quite easily if you let the tank get less than 1/4 filled.

    • @AngeloArrifano
      @AngeloArrifano 6 років тому +5

      It's not just that he could be damaging.. the hybrid battery controller, despite showing zero-full charge in the dashboard, does actually always keep the battery between 40-80% (approximate numbers) off actual charge. This is done to prevent overcharging or depletion as that can reduce the life of the battery or even damage individual cells.
      So, in normal circumstances the engine can always turn on and charge the batteries to ensure their charge never goes below 40%. However, when the engine doesn't start anymore (no fuel for example) then the hybrid battery controller cuts off energy to the traction motor to prevent the batteries going under 40%, but I believe AC and other things running from HV are allowed to run. If one continues with AC on I believe eventually the battery will eventually near depletion and cut off (low voltage threshold). If you arrive to this point, it's quite possible you damage some cells as they never share the same wear/voltage...

      +No: I don't know of any that cut off the fuel pump until the engine has been off for the length of time that is programmed into it. Lots of fuel pumps die this way, partly because it is also cooled by the fuel. In Mesa, Arizona, shop owner Mark Salem once remarked on his radio show that nearly all the fuel pumps he replaced were for college students who kept their tanks nearly empty.

    You are crazy. If that battery failed to turn the engine you were going to have one long day. You would have to get a HV charger brought to rescue you and those are so expensive that even dealers don't like buying them. Alternatively you would have to get another Prius to jump the high voltage battery and that's a risky procedure not approved by Toyota

    • @liveuntetheredmusepodcast4832
      @liveuntetheredmusepodcast4832 6 років тому

      If you know something, even a little, about batteries... all batteries will "self charge". (haven't you ever taken a dead battery out of a flashlight, and put it back in, and it works for a short period of time??) well if not, go learn something. This was a great test with the Prius! You don't need a HV charger either, if you kill the acc. batttery just jump it, and run the car on gas only, (if something were to happen to the main electric motor battery).. which is really unlikely. You can still just run the car on gas, and it wil jump just like any car.

    • @SENIORDUDE63
      @SENIORDUDE63 6 років тому +1

      You don't own a Prius do you? I do (2007) and me thinks it is YOU that needs to go learn something. If this had been a 2nd Gen Prius, he would have needed a tow-truck as this would have drained the HV battery to the point of not being able to start the car. I don't know if has changed by now, but there were only TWO HV battery chargers...in the whole country (think big $$$) if the HV battery was completely drained. Also, there is a code that is set when the car runs out of gas that basically voids the warranty on the HV battery and the customer eats the cost of the replacement. These cars DO NOT have a 12V starter, they only have a 12V battery that boots the computers and trips the relay for the HV battery which starts the car through the cars transmission. The 2000-2006 Honda Insight (I own a 2000 and a 2001) does have a 12V starter which is used in extremely cold temperatures and when the HV battery wears out/dies.

    • @liveuntetheredmusepodcast4832
      @liveuntetheredmusepodcast4832 6 років тому

      I own a 2008, and do all my own work. First of all you need to get rid of that 2007. Everything below 2008 has a majority of different bugs, and this is noted within the History of Prius (should of done your research if you didn't buy that car new). The 12 volt battery will self re-charge enough to start,.. (if you happen to have a 12v battery that's beyond it's life, then yes it probably won't self recharge, so in that case just use a portable jumper). If you guys have to ever charge your HV batteries when dead, then you are obviously in that 2007 and below era, where all the bugs exist. Warranty on a 2007..........?
      Not to mention all this, there is a MOD you can accommodate into your Prius, where you can totally run on just the EV system, so the gas engine will not turn on. (Far as using this MOD on 2007 and below years),.. I don't recommend it!

      I've been surprised at how much power my 2005 model has. I had a Honda Accord 2.2 liter previously, and it was great but the Prius would probably beat it in a race. Accord sounded like it was working very hard at 100 mph, whereas the Prius seemed ready for more at that speed (however the Prius software might top it out before that so I don't know yet).

    • @jamescarter3196
      @jamescarter3196 6 років тому +2

      Hash, the point about 'showing off' is a relative thing, as much about maneuverability as speed, but we're not pretending it'll beat a muscle car in a race. The Prius inherently doesn't pull torque like that; the engine computer regulates the car to achieve highest mileage with the help of continuously-variable transmission and combining the power of electric and gas engines, and can average upward of 42 mpg at 75-80 mph (there's a sweet spot in the 80-90 range that I hope to find, but opportunities on the road are not abundant for extended driving at that speed). I've pulled 50.8 mpg over 400 miles where I was mostly between 78-82 mph.
      If you can average 30 mpg in a Hellcat I'll buy you a unicorn.

    Had car towed home, it's Sunday. However I don't think that was a full 5 gallons and the Light still blinked after gas was in the car.
    My question is: Will I be in trouble if I tell Toyota what happened? If the whole battery needs to be replaced., If the car doesn't eventually start after I add more gas.
    I truly think the Tow driver didn't bring enough gas. All the Electronics are working Just that the ready light won't come on. I didn't know I was out of Gas.

    A great way to destroy your fuel pump. The fuel pump relies on gasoline to lubricate the pump. Running of out of gas will burn up the bump sucking it dry. No these cars don't have hydraulic power steering. Its entirely electronic that runs off the high voltage traction battery pack. The AC Compressor is also electric. The only thing the serpentine belt is driving is the the water pump for the engine. The other water pump is the inverter coolant pump for the inverter/converter that is also electric.

    Interesting test. When I accidentally ran my Vauxhall / Opel Astra 1.7CDTi (Turbo Diesel) out of fuel it was a complete bitch to get going again.
    I walked to the fuel station and filled up with a gallon and tried to start it with a long session on the starter motor and full throttle but no go.
    When the recovery guy turned up he was so rude that it was funny (like Basil Fawlty) since I guess he blamed me (actually although the fuel gauge said Empty, the computer said a range of about 20 miles from memory but I was to blame I guess for believing the computer range display). He came prepared with a little electric pump; he filled up the fuel filter with Diesel and used the pump to prime the lines to the tank at the rear of the car. He then got a can of Easy Start (Ether based starting spray - called `Start yer bastard' in NZ & Australia lol) and got me to start the engine while he sprayed into the throttle body. The engine started OK but I didn't really like him using the Easy Start since it made the engine really knock due to the lack of proper Diesel timing while spraying such volatile fluid in to the air intake (worried about my already worn bottom end bearings). Searches on the net confirm my misgivings, especially since the engine was not cold.

      Maybe.... something different? The guy doesn't seem to be a car tech so I take it just as 'average dude seeing what his car will do' and he got to the point reasonably quick. Maybe it wouldn't restart after putting gas in it and he'd have to call a tow truck; burned out fuel pump perhaps. Maybe it would show a specific error code, or a self-destruct sequence, or just a bunch of farting noises for all we know. Toyota can be very crafty. You ever notice we never see Toyota and Nintendo standing next to each other in public? Same person. It's the great deception.

      Given that the 12V battery only switches a relay for the traction battery, and the traction battery starts the engine, I was wondering whether it would have enough juice to start the engine after being run "flat", so it's interesting to know that the car will refuse to move even when there's plenty of charge left in the traction battery to start the engine again after you've added more fuel.
