I’ve been addicted to shoe shining since I’ve started watching your videos. Just did my first mirror shine on a pair of Cole Haans yesterday. And now I’m so into shoes that I’m planning on getting a pair of Carminas on my next purchase. Keep up the good work!

Hey Elegant Oxford, came across your videos yesterday and binged all your content, even went so far as to finally buy good shoe trees and a whole batch of Saphir cream and a horse-hair brush! Now I have a weird request, I find your videos really comforting, so an idea would be to upload a complete cleaning once, just unedited from the tripod. Would be great to fall asleep to and see more detail in your technique. Again, love your content and attention to detail. Cheers!

My husband & I are leather makers, we see neglect of all leather products.
blot dry leather when wet, keep leather supple by applying product to your item regularly, like you would clean your garments.
The animal who use to wear this hide, use to create natural oils to keep his outter covering supple.
He can no longer keep it soft and pliable, you have to do it, it up to you.
its a labor of love & pride in your purchase .

Love how the colour turned out, they look great. I will be a dissenting voice here though, I do not understand sole savers. I love the look and more importantly the sound of leather soled shoes. It seems counter intuitive to me to put a piece of rubber on a nice leather sole.

Every time I bought a new pair of oxfords I immediately head to a cobbler to install the sole savers on them. Even if it has a rubber sole I still do it. With the sole being thicker It means that the shoe can last longer. One of the things I also gave them to install Is the metal heel plate. Those annoying heel drags always create imbalance when I walk. I bought my shoes which aren't cheap so obviously I want them to last longer

Mirror Shine? I guess it's a nicer way of saying "spit shine" which is what I am used to. I did try different colors of Kiwi when shining combat boots. I found blue worked well for me. I also used Neutral which seemed even softer than regular Kiwi. Smelled worse, too. We used Parade Gloss as well, but my favorite was Lincoln Wax. It smelled better, and was as hard as Parade Gloss. I don't use polish on my work boots, but maybe I should at least clean them and put a coat of some kind of leather protectant on them to make them last.

I managed to mirror shine recently! Although it feels like the method is extremely ineffective and time wasting but at least somewhat consistent.
I start with a layer of wax, polish it gently until dry, then add some water with a new spot on my cloth with medium pressure and then on another clean spot on my cloth i continue to polish with some "breth moisture" while reducing my pressure to extremely light. When the first layer feels like perfect i add the second with the same method. One layer takes about 5-10 minutes, so the overall process is at least an hour for a pair (5-7 layers for the shine to develop). When i stick to the same spot on my cloth while switching water/wax the shine dulls again. Any suggestions for improvement?

I would shine my moms shoes when I was 9 up because she was a busy lady, but insisted on shined shoes. The spit shine goes faster with a little more build up put on and buffed off before doing the polish. Really you are polishing the wax surface, nothing more. If you have shoes that are kept polished, even without a spit shine, then doing it is very fast. There is definitely a knack to it. In the Navy I had a Philippine Stewart mate... I would guess he was 60 years old a seaman, E3 pay grade. He could spit shine anything in a few minutes.... I mean anything, even worn working boots. Other than that his pastimes where craps playing and smoking! Now mom often wore nappa leather ankle boots, with fleece lining, when it was cold and switch to dress indoors. Those were very difficult to keep shined both due to weather effects like cold, slush, salt and etc. They needed to be waterproofed too due to that environment. So they were strip.. with acetone.... then polish every day. I would Kiwi wax polish after 2-3 cream polish layers brushed between each coat. The next to last step was taking and filling the gap between the welt and the uppers with wax buffing to take overage off. The final was to flame them over a gas stove... providing the mirror like shine. But the large build up needed to be removed after she got home... and the entire process reapplied... with the Kiwi over the prepped with the cream polish step done in the early mourning before she was off to the courthouse. Then I would do my shoes. But that build up cracks in just the day of use and you have to remove and start over, when that happens.
I do not recommend the British way... When we were kids we often when to visit my grandmother in England. She lived on the west tony side of town, not more than a few blocks from the palace. Mom always came for the whole time, as she interrupted her career when we were little. Grandmother had given us ceramic figures of the Household Guard I got the mounted guard and my brother the foot guard or Busbie "bear skin hat" ones. Often I would ride my bike to the royal stables where the guard congregated... this was over 60 years ago so it was the old stables. I would walk in and look at the horses and talk with the guardsmen... British Army. They would be hanging around waiting for the time when they had to perform the change of guard or some other ceremony. So I learned the British way... they soaked the shoes or boot is urine at least overnight when new... the tall boots would be sponged overall with the urine, then the bottom part be soaked... let dry and then did the polish much like I did with the flame at the end. I cannot remember why the did the soak... and I was always very inquisitive... I think it had to do with closing the pores of the leather.... its been a very long time now. Like wanting to know about the tack and all that used. So they were always stripping the polish off to reapply as it could crack easy. The flame thing gives absolute the highest polish and is reliable. I got to ride the horse of the Sergeant Major sometimes as he was always looking out for the little ginger haired kid... who wanted to be a guardsman when he grew up... thing is British Army is a 20 year enlistment! We went not at all after I was 9 because mom went back to work, and she hated many English grandmother... as she was German... and in those days she would take guff from my grandmother, family and friends due to the war... many had their houses destroyed in the "Blitz". My great aunt Dot lived in Coventry, that you know.

I might add being sent to public school in America in your public school dress of England guarantees a fight every day... particularly if you lived in Wyoming, and had a bit of a brit accent. But I still like to dress at least a little up when I am out, and my father's mom was a great lady to have as a grandmother... !

I'm sure you said, but I'm still not getting exactly what the cold water does. I know it works, I use it, but don't know why it works, in conjunction with the wax and heat from friction. At first blush, it seems like it wouldn't do a thing, or defeat what you're trying to do, but it does work. Why eludes me. Oh, I have actually set my shoes in the fridge for a bit after starting the mirror shine process. It seems to speed up the process a bit... again, I don't know why. Shouldn't, but does.

I add sole savers to all of my shoes. What is it worth to not fall?

If sole guards are glued, is there a chance that they can simply come off with heavy wear? Sole guards vs sending back to factory for Dainite sole ? Which would you suggest ?

You can use Master All Purpose Cement. It's really strong, but you have to follow the directions. Shouldn't have any issues.

Are sole savers enough if the front of the shoe is worn down quickly or is a combination with toe taps better in that case?

Either works. With plates it’s even better but sole slavers do a great job

Some people go bare leather to pavement and I just cannot imagine that ever. I knock on wood when I say that I have never had to go to a cobbler for a resole. I prefer a leather soul over rubber, but I just cannot file down my leather soles on the cement

Hey James. Rubber soles and dainite are becoming extremely popular. Crockett & Jones and even TLB Mallorca offer it so it’s definitely an industry standard at this point. And they’re more durable

I have several pairs of daynights that I soley use for rainy days. But as for my leather soles, I religiously cover them all with a sole protector. I wish that they were made transparent so that I could sport a long lasting marble painted piece of art like what you make. Transparent rubber does exist as I’ve seen it in use for sneakers but it’s just a matter of getting them into production as Sole protectors For real shoes.

Is there any reason for the leather to be underneath sole protector? Could it be some other material and to be as "good"? Im just curious about the sole protector because you dont use the leather so whats the point.

Why would you want to spoil the integrity of your shoe by putting rubber on the sole? shoes should be worn as bought. I have never put rubber on my leather sole shoes. Does it make the shoes feel different?

If you are in a wet climate its really useful. I don't find it affects the feel of the shoe, no.
