That’s for the great video. If you’re putting it on the retaining side of the sleeper wall, so the higher side with all the retained soil, would you first put the gravel in as a bed and to form the fall for the pipe, then put the pipe down maybe with the fabric sock and then more gravel, say 100mm cover then the weed membrane and then just fill in with the topsoil from the digging? I have about a one metre high wall and trying to figure out the order of things. Thanks again.
Our new build is like this, problem is the bottom of our garden has a brick wall at the end of it 50% of the width and then fencing but the drain is on the otherside of that brick wall so got no where to tap into. Have the garage gutters but then that would involve putting a pump and running that which isn't viable. Can't install a soakaway neither as its clay
Some of the planning by new build developers is terrible! It seems a lot of the time that the garden is just forgotten about completely. Hope you find a solution 🤞🏻
@@NoviceGardener yeah then it ends up being us to pay thousands to fix it. I believe there is local planning for drainage and they must abide by it but not sure how to obtain the plans
They are all the way around the pipe in each direction. If you put your own holes in the pipe, the advice is keep them down. That way, the water level doesn't need to rise too high before the pipe takes it away.
It’s perfect now, no problems. Even when we have a heavy rainfall, it stays dry at the bottom and the rest dries up pretty quick. Just wish I had installed this when I installed the wall!
Thanks for this series of vids, I'm planning to do something very similar and will follow pretty much what you've done. Regarding the drainage, other guides I have read suggest installing a drainage pipe behind the retaining wall- I know you didn't do this, do you think it would have made any difference? Would you do it if you were to start again? Cheers
If I was to do this again, I’d definitely install the drainage pipe behind the wall as it will be able to collect any water that drains off from the higher tier before reaching the wall. I didn’t want to install it behind my wall after the fact in case I disturbed the patio foundations. Good luck with your project, hope all goes well! 👍🏻
Hi what type of landscape fabric did you use. I’ve just done mine and after putting it in and testing I’m sure I’ve used the wrong type. It might still work just not as well. I used the woven geo fabric.should have been none woven ! Was buried under the wall before I realised ffs
It won't let the water flow through as easily, but it eventually will. I wouldn't worry, it's more about the void that you've created. The water should make it's way in!
Hi, Im in Sheffield and my garden is a muddy mess quite quickly every time it rains. If the grass is already muddy as hell, would a french drain work? or does it need to dry first to then become most effective? I'm pretty sure its heavy clay soil in my area. What I dont want is to install a french drain and then the top layer of mud to still happy afterwards. Thanks
If you put a French drain in, just make sure that it runs to somewhere that the water can escape. Also, you’ll need to make sure that you have a good layer of stones on top, something decorative would work, just so the water has somewhere to escape to.
I noticed you put the pipe on a thin layer of gravel, other videos I've watched they put the pipe directly on the bottom, is there a right or wrong way? Or benefits to the way you've done it? Or was it just to elevate the pipe so it flows downwards?
Hi, what type/brand of pipe did you use for the drain?
Ah I know this pain, just dug 52m of trenching in my garden for French drains to get rid of standing water, it's worked wonders
It's getting there I don't think the clay is going to help matters but I'm sure it will be fantastic when it's done.
Can’t wait to start seeding - I’m sick of looking out and seeing clay! 🤣

That would work great doing it that way. As long as you have some sort of gravel barrier with membrane between the pipe and the soil, you're sound.
Brilliant subscribed... but how dose the water enter a soild black pipe ? 🤔
It’s perforated too - I just didn’t know the best way to cut into it without making it a mess 😬

Which way are the holes facing in the pipe? I read they are supposed to face down rather than up?

hey, how are you finding the drainage now? has it sorted all your problems?

How is the drainage now it’s winter and more water in the garden? Looking to build something similar. Cheers 👍🏼
It's perfect! It made a huge difference. I definitely should have done this before building the retaining wall, but we live and learn!
Where did you get that drainage pipe from mate?

Hey, I'm doing something very similar at the moment. Which fabric sheet did you use? Is it specifically for this use or is weed membrane ok to use?
It was just a regular weed membrane to keep any of the soil out.
I’m doing same aswell. Iv got access to all the materials at my work so ideal

If you put it onto a layer of gravel, it just supports the drainage. Also, it’s less likely that any soil gets into the pipe.
Looks good Lad, how many bags you use in the end? I'm doing exactly the same in my garden currently and it looks about the same length 🤣🤣
I ended up buying 15 bags, and I still need a few more to finish it off, but maybe only 4/5. I thought they’d go a lot further! 🤣
Does it matter what side of the wall you put the French drain ?
Ideally you want it to go behind the wall, but I didn't think about this prior, stupidly!
But in front of the wall does an adequate job too.
Where did you buy your pipe from ? Cheers
B&Q, got loads left too for if I ever need it (which is probably unlikely!)
@@NoviceGardener Cheers for the reply - guessing it's the floPlast b lack flexible 80mm ?
Yep, that’s the one 👍🏻
