I always used LG phones for the amazing audio capabilities they have. I had the V20, V35 (my favorite) and now the v40. Both have an amazing Dac that is recognized by apps like USB Audio Player Pro, allowing bit perfect audio playback and even DSD. The v35 and V40 also plays native MQA from an older version of Tidal, or via UAPP. Qobuz is also playable trough UAPP. Unfortunately those devices are getting rare pretty quick, so I'm literally stocking some. Leaving android on version 9 is also key for allowing software to access the dac freely, since there are "security" settings on the updates on version 10 that block dac access, switching back to android mixer. I've already tried external dongle dacs and heard no difference for most. These LG phones are great daps, and pretty cheap
I couldn't agree for more.. my v20 just died a year ago and I can't find a better replacement for it. Now I'm in UA-cam university to find something equal or better to replace my v20.
I was using Muzecast for sometime with original flac files stored in laptop and streaming online to my mobile. As I have less storage space on laptop, I had to discontinue this method. This may be feasible for a NAS or NUC unit. PowerAmp has many tweaks and does provide good bitrate but these days, there is some issue in playback, it randomly pauses for 10 secs and then continues playback. This started to happen after their latest update. I am in India and able to get Tidal but Qobuz is impossible to get here. So I am stuck with Tidal at the moment. Apple music lossless does not feel right compared to Tidal. Other services are just the normal ones, nothing to rave about
Please do an updated video on Android 13 downsampling bypass rumours, and confirmed Android 14 bypass. I wonder if it's native forced or individual app devs must encode lossless compatibility?
You need to mention getting into Android's "Developer options" menu to make sure you are using a "better" Bluetooth codec if your devices support it, I don't think it's automatic.
I daily listen my wav/flac lossless collection using Poweramp Music Player. The hi-res output with DVC off and without giving any chance to resample the audio. It's giving me good audio experiance. And my android device is Nokia X6. Please give a detailed review of poweramp for hires or lossless output.
Purchasing Usb audio player pro on android unlocked audio heaven for me, i cant belive how amaizing everything sounded with fiio k3 automatically switching between different sample rates (led turns green when feeding 96khz or + otherwise blue) even mp3 sounded better now i need to use foobar on pc to achive bit perfect playback and bypass windows processing and let the dac do the entire work it feels like ive upgraded my dac and headphones. Now next thing is to get into nice pair of balanced headphones with fiio k11 or somrthing more powerful as ill be going for Hifiman sundra (32 ohms since they're planar so might work differently) / something planar or Senhesier hd650 (600ohms)
Something really not considered here, is that all android based phones/devices are not made equally, and the way this video is presented also makes it sound as though Android are somehow the "gatekeepers" of ALL dacs within Android phones - Dacs are hardware, and whilst YES any given Dac in an android device will need to run through an android process, different phone manufacturers will use different Dacs, even within the same brand. Samsung probably supply a huge percentage of the market with their particular dac chip choice, but (for example) I have a Sony Xperia 5 iii and a Samsung Galaxy S24 ultra, and the Sony sounds WAY better through the same headphones - even with equalisers set to flat. My point being, not ALL android phones will sound "the same". I personally think my Sony phone is the best device I've ever owned for playing music through. It's simply superb.
My Oppo sounds very fine to me with just connecting the amp and speakers to the headphone amp and not the usb port. Ia using Poweramp and equalize to my taste in each song.
Ascl someone else said, I use LG phones either the V30 era (for B&O tuning) or V40 and up (for Meridian tuning). Both sound great with wired headphones with the high-end ESS DAC. I use UAPP to listen to Qobuz and Neutron to listen to my 100% DSD content and outside streaming sources like internet radio. Still not quite sure how Chromecast (or CC Music) works, but I found completely by accident a surprisingly free program called Mconnect (has Qobuz & Tidal access built in). The app syncs wirelessly with my Oppo 205 via its DLNA function & send pure hi-res audio from my phone to my main stereo system issue-free.

I am new to this experience, but after doing a lot of homework, I settled on a UGREEN 32bit USB DAC as the bridge between my Android phone playing FLAC files into a set of Audio Technica ATH50X headphones. The quality of reproduction fidelity when compared to what my Moto G8 Power 3.5mm audio socket gives is like listening to another world entirely. It is even possible for me to discern the subtle differences between 16/24/32bit levels of resolution, mainly in the spatial relationships between acoustic instruments and how musicians interact with each other. But where it really matters is when listening to really well recorded and mixed 16bit stereo FLAC’s ripped from my CD collection. All for so little financial outlay.
So if I use a USB C to USB B cable on an iPad (or iPhone) directly into a DAC that accepts a USB B input, I will get Lossless? or USB C to USB B from Android phone? and get lossless from any/all of them? Great video btw
@Avinaw with normal bluetooth headphones, you will not notice a lot of improvement. The amplification in the bluetooth headset is usually very weak. In de poweramp, you can maybe force aptx hd or something similar for sending a better signal to the bluetooth headphones. I don't have any experience with poweramp.

Headphone jack is better than Bluetooth, because Bluetooth isn't fast enough to send uncompressed audio. But for headphone vs USB C connected to external DAC, it depends on if the external DAC + amplifier is better quality than the ones in the phone, and because the external has more space, it has the potential to contain better equipment. The amplifier makes a bigger difference than the DAC, because it's underpowered for your headphones, the sound will be too quiet, and if you turn it up, it will sound distorted. Generally for on the move, headphone jack will be good enough. But some people find portable DAC's that they are really happy with, and don't mind carrying around with them. 3) DAC convert digital to analogue. Headphone is an analogue signal, that's already passed through a DAC and amplifier. So you won't connect an external DAC to the headphone jack, you'd connect the external DAC to the USB-C socket to get the digital audio output.

Hi I thought it'll be "that" easy to by pass the Galaxy S23 DAC just by using an external one. But that didn't work in my case. I got a Audio Quest Dragonfly Black with the AQ dongle to adapt the USB C TO USB A on the dragonfly and thanks I'm streaming Tidal on Roon I was able to se the audio path and confirm that it was coming out as lossy. I would appreciate your advice on how to improve audio quality from Android TV, specifically from UA-cam (premium) Music App. I bypass audio bitstream from my Nvidea Shield TV 2019 Tube through my Phillips (Safi sucks) TV HDMI ARC linked to my STR-DN1050 (this old reciever has hdmi 2.0 but doesn't support hdcp 2.2 or hdr ffs) I understand Android defaults to 48Khz this is shown on the reciever display, just wondering is there another app or some way of getting Hi Res audio from YT music I set YT music to hires and tried gen2 chromecast directly to recievers hi-res capable hdmi input but still get 48khz video format, apparently only the obsolete Chromecast Audio dongles support hi-res. Hi Mike, your video was excellent. I am using Astell & Kern XB10 DAC with Monk Plus earphones, getting fairly good audio. How can I check what is the actual bitrate I am getting in the output ? My mobile is Poco C3 which has some experimental codecs upto 32 bit processing. I do not see much difference in connecting XB10 or directly to my handset, when using Tidal Plus.

I'm really thinking about to build my own cheap Home-InternetRadio including a cheapo anroid phone - over WiFi to connect to the internet - and a not very chep DAC over USB and a nice Amp....the only thing I will miss then is the remote access even if I'm home and I have to go to the unit to switch channels, modes and so on... So many people asking so many questions, is it going to sound better just because someone else says it should? If you can't tell for your self then you're wasting your time asking.
Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference because of a single configuration difference. But if you can verify for sure that it is making an improvement, and then you will enable the option obviously. And then if you enable enough of the right configurations it's going to make a difference all combined. But there's nothing wrong with getting confirmation that a single option is going to make an improvement. also sometimes on the day maybe it's hard to tell the difference, but then on another day because of varying factors, you canntell the difference. Also there's nothing wrong with getting the right answer so you know for sure, just so you become more educated about audio quality. Also if you don't have very trained ears to pick up on the differences between subtle quality changes, it's still better to have the best audio output configuration so that way at least your ears can train. I just find this mindset so annoying. "If you can't tell the difference between high and low quality playback, just stick with a shitty sounding configuration". Also how long does it take you to type out a question? Is it a waste of time to clack out 20 words on your keyboard to learn something new and improve your audio quality? Comments like this are why people think audiophiles are annoying and snobby lol.
@@d-rockanomaly9243 I came to the conclusion a long time ago that the limitations of my hearing or sound equipment did not affect my ability to actually just enjoy the music I was listening to rather than the endless quest for ever better sound reproduction and so I gave up. In just the same way I decided that I was never going to find a mate for my pet unicorn so I had to let him go free into the wild to fend for himself and maybe just maybe find that illusive lifelong soulmate.

Then using Apple Match (similar to Apple Music) to my iPhone. From the iPhone to an EarMen Sparrow using an SKW 3.5mm Male to 2 RCAs connected to Kanto YU6s. Inexpensive and compact but at times a nice entry level audiophile analog sound. Thnx🔊

I recently tried my old desktop DAC (SMSL Sanskrith 12tht MKII) in my bedroom over usb. Compatibility is really an issue. My Tablet (Lenovo)won't even work with the DAC attached. My old phone (LG G6) will but everything is 96khz and it starts powering the DAC causing the battery to drain very fast. My current phone at least doesn't power the dac and bit rates change but won't go over 96khz (DAC supports 768 khz). Do any of these Audio players you can use support signing in to a streaming service? I use Qobuz.
@@audioarkitekts USB-C to Micro-USB cable. Qobuz reccomends USB Audio player pro so that will be OK. I found there is a trial for it, just not in the play store, but an apk on their website. I'll try that on the Lenovo first before I purchase. If it doesn't work I'll move my CCA to it over optical since I will be getting a WIIM Pro for the system it is in. I had a small Sharkoon dongle for the task, but I fried it switching the rca live and touching it to the banana plug on my TB10D. *spark* (it should have asterisks around it, but I _accidentally_ -discovered- *comment mark up* for youtube)
My phone (Oppo) sounds very good with just connecting through the headphone jack to the amp (Fosi audio) to the speakers (Samsung 25 watt) using Poweramp. No DAC. No Bluetooth. The files (flac) are stored in the phone

You need to use usb audio player pro and a dac. Unfortunately apple music is not supported by uapp. You need to either download music or use tidal or qobuz

I’m fairly sure with IPods you’d have to use iTunes to access the music and then from there you can download it to your computer. From there you can probably upload it to an android device.
Awesome information thanks. What's annoying to a criminal level, is the "C" connectors are absolute garbage. The phone part of it ALWAYS end up wrecked by the stress applid to that cord when you carry your phone around. At best, a 90 degrees connector help delay the destruction for a couple of extra week.

A good dongle DAC makes all the difference, and unfortunately we don't have perfect app for direct USB, I tested USB audio player pro, but can't listen to other source while listening to it (like UA-cam got no sound), neutron app it's the best audio quality but it's damn ugly, hiby distorts the sound
Could be a few different things all the way down to dust in the 3.5mm output jack. Try different approaches to narrow it down. It could very well be the dongle itself.
In short the issues are surrounding to Android algorithm resampling rate ec I thought its a hardware issue why since manufacturers are ready to pour money in hardware for best possible outcome.
Chromecast isn't a great solution for audiophiles. It tops or at 96Khz. I read Qobuz still send 192Khz but Chromecast doesn't support it so. Chromecast doesn't support Apple Music's ALAC codec they use for High Resolution and oddly Amazon Music HD (even CD Quality lossles) doesn't support Chromecast at all, only their lossy music works with Chromecast.
OR simply get an LG device for cheap and enjoy the quad dac and if for any reason you need a bit more power which is not likely and want the 4.4 balance then get a dongle for those rear occasions u need more power
Hmm, I don't know, I don't get it. I have found it is physically impossible to get decent sound from a smartphone or tablet. They just are not made for the application of audio. Especially smartphones, one can't even get decent sound quality on a phone call with those things. Besides, the batteries on those things only last up to 30 minutes if you are lucky and the planets align before you must recharge them. I hate smartphones, they are dreadful! (I was forced to get one a few months ago, but it sits at home unpowered. It is only for if I am stranded with The Vid (covid) or the upcoming dreadful situation facing everyone soon of not being able to even buy a candy bar without a smartphone, something I would rather resist and starve to death or something than to give into). When I want to listen to music it is vinyl or CD.
Yeah unfortunately mobile phone streaming isn't for everyone. Perhaps some day you will tinker around with it until you find a process you enjoy through your phone.

I still would not have a smartphone had it not been forced on me. I kept my flip phone to carry with me in case of emergency, it is reliable, unlike smartphones. It doesn't matter much as I am not into streaming except for research and occasional background music. I also find it rather inconvenient. I'm very old school. It took a long time for me to even accept CDs.
You have an experience with smart phones that is far from typical. They are very capable devices, it is the user that is the weak link. I dislike many aspects of phone ownership, so just use it as I wish, but don't blame the phone, blame yourself. Learn to use it and you will enjoy it. I too prefer to own cds than rely on streaming, but have a Tidal sub and have found myself using it more than anticipated.

I say let them be "very capable devices" on their own for those who like them and can use them. I can't learn to use it for anything beyond phone calls (which is a tiny bit sketchy in my experience as well, but it works), because it is far too complicated and not usable for anything I need or do. The only purpose I have a mobile phone ("smart" or otherwise) is because pay phones no longer exist. I can't make spreadsheets with it, I can't take pictures that well at all with it, I can't "video" with it at all (I'm not sure it has that function actually). I can't do email with it, I can't use it for any aspect of music. I can barely "text" with it. I'm not into texting, so it doesn't matter to me. Why would I use a phone for pictures and video when I have cameras for that? Why would I try to listen to music or watch movies or whatever on a phone when I have a PC or a "TV"? I have extremely poor eyesight anyway so even the thought of doing that is absurd. Personally, I find smartphones rather useless. I'm often amazed at those who are good with them, but I also don't want to know how to do whatever they do. I have a Spotify sub, but I only find it useful for research or background noise on occasion. I don't like using it for listening, casual or otherwise, I get fatigued inside of 10 minutes.

For bluetooth you can set the preferred codec in the developer options in Android.

The amplifier makes a bigger difference than the DAC, because it's underpowered for your headphones, the sound will be too quiet, and if you turn it up, it will sound distorted.
Generally for on the move, headphone jack will be good enough. But some people find portable DAC's that they are really happy with, and don't mind carrying around with them.
3) DAC convert digital to analogue. Headphone is an analogue signal, that's already passed through a DAC and amplifier. So you won't connect an external DAC to the headphone jack, you'd connect the external DAC to the USB-C socket to get the digital audio output.

Hi I thought it'll be "that" easy to by pass the Galaxy S23 DAC just by using an external one. But that didn't work in my case. I got a Audio Quest Dragonfly Black with the AQ dongle to adapt the USB C TO USB A on the dragonfly and thanks I'm streaming Tidal on Roon I was able to se the audio path and confirm that it was coming out as lossy. Any idea what to do to make it work? Everybody AR saying that is not possible to bypass the DAC via the Galaxy S23 USB C port

I would appreciate your advice on how to improve audio quality from Android TV, specifically from UA-cam (premium) Music App.
I bypass audio bitstream from my Nvidea Shield TV 2019 Tube through my Phillips (Safi sucks) TV HDMI ARC linked to my STR-DN1050 (this old reciever has hdmi 2.0 but doesn't support hdcp 2.2 or hdr ffs)
I understand Android defaults to 48Khz this is shown on the reciever display, just wondering is there another app or some way of getting Hi Res audio from YT music I set YT music to hires and tried gen2 chromecast directly to recievers hi-res capable hdmi input but still get 48khz video format, apparently only the obsolete Chromecast Audio dongles support hi-res.
I lay awake at night agonisingly over-thinking this important issue even though there's every chance my 53yr old carpenters ears won't hear any difference , but you know how it is.

Hi Mike, your video was excellent. I am using Astell & Kern XB10 DAC with Monk Plus earphones, getting fairly good audio. How can I check what is the actual bitrate I am getting in the output ? My mobile is Poco C3 which has some experimental codecs upto 32 bit processing. I do not see much difference in connecting XB10 or directly to my handset, when using Tidal Plus.
You should notice an improvement with the DAC however I will look into the Monk Plus.

So many people asking so many questions, is it going to sound better just because someone else says it should? If you can't tell for your self then you're wasting your time asking.
Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference because of a single configuration difference. But if you can verify for sure that it is making an improvement, and then you will enable the option obviously. And then if you enable enough of the right configurations it's going to make a difference all combined. But there's nothing wrong with getting confirmation that a single option is going to make an improvement. also sometimes on the day maybe it's hard to tell the difference, but then on another day because of varying factors, you canntell the difference. Also there's nothing wrong with getting the right answer so you know for sure, just so you become more educated about audio quality. Also if you don't have very trained ears to pick up on the differences between subtle quality changes, it's still better to have the best audio output configuration so that way at least your ears can train. I just find this mindset so annoying. "If you can't tell the difference between high and low quality playback, just stick with a shitty sounding configuration". Also how long does it take you to type out a question? Is it a waste of time to clack out 20 words on your keyboard to learn something new and improve your audio quality?

@@d-rockanomaly9243 I came to the conclusion a long time ago that the limitations of my hearing or sound equipment did not affect my ability to actually just enjoy the music I was listening to rather than the endless quest for ever better sound reproduction and so I gave up. In just the same way I decided that I was never going to find a mate for my pet unicorn so I had to let him go free into the wild to fend for himself and maybe just maybe find that illusive lifelong soulmate.

Then using Apple Match (similar to Apple Music) to my iPhone. From the iPhone to an EarMen Sparrow using an SKW 3.5mm Male to 2 RCAs connected to Kanto YU6s. Inexpensive and compact but at times a nice entry level audiophile analog sound. Thnx🔊

I recently tried my old desktop DAC (SMSL Sanskrith 12tht MKII) in my bedroom over usb. Compatibility is really an issue. My Tablet (Lenovo)won't even work with the DAC attached. My old phone (LG G6) will but everything is 96khz and it starts powering the DAC causing the battery to drain very fast. My current phone at least doesn't power the dac and bit rates change but won't go over 96khz (DAC supports 768 khz). Do any of these Audio players you can use support signing in to a streaming service? I use Qobuz.
Most apps will support Qobuz, however double check before you buy one. Its a shame it doesn't work with your Lenovo, how are you connecting it?
@@audioarkitekts USB-C to Micro-USB cable. Qobuz reccomends USB Audio player pro so that will be OK. I found there is a trial for it, just not in the play store, but an apk on their website. I'll try that on the Lenovo first before I purchase. If it doesn't work I'll move my CCA to it over optical since I will be getting a WIIM Pro for the system it is in. I had a small Sharkoon dongle for the task, but I fried it switching the rca live and touching it to the banana plug on my TB10D. *spark* (it should have asterisks around it, but I _accidentally_ -discovered- *comment mark up* for youtube)
It works so I bought it. Of course it is of no use for youtube or other video playback, but I can use my BT-speaker for that or headphones.

Get yourself some speakers from Stereo Integrity. I would use a DAC dongle and connect it to your car's sound system that way.

I’m fairly sure with IPods you’d have to use iTunes to access the music and then from there you can download it to your computer. From there you can probably upload it to an android device.

A good dongle DAC makes all the difference, and unfortunately we don't have perfect app for direct USB, I tested USB audio player pro, but can't listen to other source while listening to it (like UA-cam got no sound), neutron app it's the best audio quality but it's damn ugly, hiby distorts the sound

Could be a few different things all the way down to dust in the 3.5mm output jack. Try different approaches to narrow it down. It could very well be the dongle itself.

Chromecast isn't a great solution for audiophiles. It tops or at 96Khz. I read Qobuz still send 192Khz but Chromecast doesn't support it so. Chromecast doesn't support Apple Music's ALAC codec they use for High Resolution and oddly Amazon Music HD (even CD Quality lossles) doesn't support Chromecast at all, only their lossy music works with Chromecast.
Im not surprised Google doesn't play well with Apple.
Bubbleup p supports 192. The DAC shows that Sample rate. It works. Qobuz supported.
Argon Solo or Wiim streaming adapters provide better quality than the Chromecast dongle, in particular when combined with a decent DAC.
OR simply get an LG device for cheap and enjoy the quad dac and if for any reason you need a bit more power which is not likely and want the 4.4 balance then get a dongle for those rear occasions u need more power

Hmm, I don't know, I don't get it. I have found it is physically impossible to get decent sound from a smartphone or tablet. They just are not made for the application of audio. Especially smartphones, one can't even get decent sound quality on a phone call with those things. Besides, the batteries on those things only last up to 30 minutes if you are lucky and the planets align before you must recharge them.
I hate smartphones, they are dreadful! (I was forced to get one a few months ago, but it sits at home unpowered. It is only for if I am stranded with The Vid (covid) or the upcoming dreadful situation facing everyone soon of not being able to even buy a candy bar without a smartphone, something I would rather resist and starve to death or something than to give into).
When I want to listen to music it is vinyl or CD.
Yeah unfortunately mobile phone streaming isn't for everyone. Perhaps some day you will tinker around with it until you find a process you enjoy through your phone.

You have an experience with smart phones that is far from typical. They are very capable devices, it is the user that is the weak link. I dislike many aspects of phone ownership, so just use it as I wish, but don't blame the phone, blame yourself. Learn to use it and you will enjoy it. I too prefer to own cds than rely on streaming, but have a Tidal sub and have found myself using it more than anticipated.

I say let them be "very capable devices" on their own for those who like them and can use them. I can't learn to use it for anything beyond phone calls (which is a tiny bit sketchy in my experience as well, but it works), because it is far too complicated and not usable for anything I need or do. The only purpose I have a mobile phone ("smart" or otherwise) is because pay phones no longer exist. I can't make spreadsheets with it, I can't take pictures that well at all with it, I can't "video" with it at all (I'm not sure it has that function actually). I can't do email with it, I can't use it for any aspect of music. I can barely "text" with it. I'm not into texting, so it doesn't matter to me. Why would I use a phone for pictures and video when I have cameras for that? Why would I try to listen to music or watch movies or whatever on a phone when I have a PC or a "TV"? I have extremely poor eyesight anyway so even the thought of doing that is absurd. Personally, I find smartphones rather useless. I'm often amazed at those who are good with them, but I also don't want to know how to do whatever they do.
