Just started my first job in HVAC as a service tech apprentice just a week ago and we've serviced quite a few heat pumps. So I have to say this video along with the other videos I've been watching on your channel have helped fill in the gaps where I was completely lost while in the field 😅 I have taken a semester of classes but thats nothing compared to what you actually need to know when out on a job. But I'm feeling much more confident and can't wait to learn more

Most informative video on heat pump systems I’ve seen. Most others causally mention the heating strips and move on. Others are giving more details about the individual components and how to buy them (from themselves, of course) than explaining what and why they are in the system. Thanks.

WOW, Craig, this is a DIAMOND. This is the best explanation I've ever seen. New to me 1. Muffler 2.W wire going out for AUX. 3.Electrical AUX strips. Also sometimes reversing valve hidden btw. condenser coils and cover grill. "Like in the wall". In my area, we don't have electrical AUX strips. South California. Even a lot of heat pumps has bypassed defrost or have removed it by some "good people". Thank you so much for this video.

I personally would like to thank you for this video. It is very informative. I qualified for a senior exemption and my county gave me a brand new furnace and this heat pump but nobody really explains what it does. The guy just said oh it’s got these coils and when it gets lower, it’ll do this. We’re about ready to go into subzero temperatures here in Chicago and I have been a 19:55 nervous wreck because of course I don’t know if those coils have ever engaged. You were very thorough you explained everything very well and I was wondering why I was getting cool air and why one day my fan wasn’t working outside when we were having an ice storm. I ended up calling them and they came out and said no it’s working correctly now I understand their Polish. They are very sweet people, but they have very bad accents and I have a hard time understanding them except for the owner. Thank you for taking the time to create this video. I feel a little bit better.

I live in FL so below 35 is rare, I elected to disconnect my heat strip as if therm is set more then 2 degree up, heat strip comes on for a boost. Also, when in heat mode compressor amps after 10 mins will get to equivalent of cooling on a 100F outdoor temp day. You can think of the outdoor condenser coil now much smaller which is now the inside coil comparatively.

I've had to rewind a few times, but then it just clicked. Thank you! Compressor discharges hot gas, since its a gas, the piston can't drop its pressure. It bypasses, in the "evaporator coil" still warm, and heats air from the return. Then heads back to the external piston and then the pressure is dropped. Outside air is absorbed and goes through the condenser. Then back through the compressor. I think I understand, someone help me if I'm wrong! Thank you!

Hi Craig, is it ok to install a packaged AC unit in Florida or would it be better to install a split AC system? I haven't had to work there so I'm not sure whats in Florida, but I thought perhaps if the evaporator coil was inside the basement or closet, it would be able to be much colder, atleast the system would have to work less to maintain the needed temp of the evaporator. Compared to when the evaporator is outside in the packaged unit and weather is 110 fereinheit. I'd like to know your thoughts on this. Thanks.

When you buy a heat pump "you get the AC/cool for free" an old saying in the HVAC industry as strict HVAC engineer(s) we call a heat pump indoor and outdoor coils vs evap and condenser due to the reserving valve of thermodynamics.

I just got a new AC installed but it is not cooling my home.
I let it run from 1:00pm where is was 83deg until 10:00pm where it was 82deg.
And I think the only reason it went down that one deg is because the outside temperature went down after dark.
I noticed the Air handler they installed is extremely larger, to the point I can no longer put my air filter in because the air handler is to tall preventing blocking the slot where you slide the air filter in.
They have crammed two air filters over the sides of the triangle shaped air handler. And they are getting wet from the condensation. which means when it is time to change the filters they will fall apart and have to shove my hand over the copper piping to try to get it out..
The blower works fine. I can feel the air coming out strong from all vents but the air is not cold.
Could they have installed the wrong size air handler.. And with it being so big and air vent shoved directly on the air handler block air flow preventing it from cooling the homes air??
I have not signed off on it yet. the manage is coming by today to do the paperwork.
But I dont want to sign off, because the house is now 89 deg..
    Any info would be appreciated.

I have an issue that happens intermittently where I can hear the heat pump turn on (dont know if it is just the fan or compressor or both) when the thermostat turns the system on, but the air handler does not come on. so if I am trying to cool, the temp in the house continues to rise because the air handler never comes on, and of course if I am trying to heat, the temp in the house will continue to drop... is it the start run capacitor or something else? sometimes if I leave system off for a while it will come back on as it is supposed to, sometimes if I set the target temp on the thermostat 10 degrees or more than the inside house temp, it seems to sometimes force it to come on.

answer a question , does the compressor create heat ? what KW rating is the compressor for say a 3 bedroomed property and also how often does the compressor kick in ? nobody ever mentions the electrical consumption and the flc , minimum size is around 7 KW and that is a lot of load used which you have to pay for , all the talk of how it works means nothing if you dont say the running costs in cold places

Hey guys. I just moved into this brand new townhome, it has a Lennox ML14XP1 heat pump system. Along with the air handler Lennox, Upflow/Horizontal Quantum Coil Air Handler, Merit, CBA25UH, 2.5 Ton, Aluminum Coil, PSC, 208/230V 1-Phase 60Hz, CBA25UH-030-230. Unfortunately, I noticed the heating mode would continuously run all day and night. Until I called the HVAC company. He said he found it to be low on refrigerant. Not sure if has a leak or it was under charged at install. But. System is running better now. But it cycles on for 20 min and off for 5 min now. And air output during cycle is 85 degrees. Runs for 20 min or so. Then shuts off for 5 min. And so on. , is this normal operation for this system. I need some peace of mind. It just seems to run a lot to maintain temp. (70). Outside is 40s. I’m in NC. Please advise if you can. I’m concerned I have a bad system in my new home !

So If I have a heat pump and i turn the heat on... am I circulating fresh air from outside into my place along with the heat thats being pumped into my home? And if its the ac only sucks air out of the house... no fresh air is being circulated inside right? Im asking because i've had to seal off every single vent door and window in my place because of 24/7 nasty smelling skunk smoking neighbors and want to know when i turn on the heat is that a way that fresh air gets into my place without having to open the windows?

I have a similar system and runs on heat pump at -33F. After that it's supposed to use the electric elements but I don't think I will ever see that happening. If your temperature is -33F then you need a new place to live
