I agree with the previous post. The 870 is an excellent design. Bring back the Wingmaster with a high blue and great fit and finish, I was given one by my father when I graduated from high school in 1979. Wonderful gun that I treasure. People will pay for quality. There are a ton of us Remington fans out there. I hope they continue back to the top.

People will pay for quality but as it currently sits Remingtons are crap and i'm disappointed with the last couple Mossberg 500's ive seen. Least the old express's from the 80's and 90's were bombproof and high quality internally, thats all most of us want in an American pump.

I'd like to see Remington continue their journey towards the high quality firearms of old, maybe even reintroduce the Remington Wingmaster but If the do I hope they do so with a deep blued finish like was typically found on those manufactured a half century ago instead of the matte finish that's standard in most firearms today.

The machining quality and metal prep are on a completely different level from this. The surface must be perfect and highly polished. This requires higher quality tooling, extra time, skilled craftsmen and a high rejection rate for small flaws. With a base price of $600 for this the high end one would probably be over $2000.

I had a 16 Guage 870 that I went with my Dad as a little boy in a White's Auto store, Wingmaster.
Smooth operation and beautiful finish. My dad never took the gun apart, only wiped it down at the end of a hunt, consequently when I inherited it I stripped it as far as the trigger group would allow and scrubbed dust and sand for half an hour at least using a soft toothbrush and a full bottle of Hoppe's and 100 patches until like new.
Smooth as silk from then on.
Now I have a retired police model 1100, 12 Guage. Same scenario, disassembled from fore grip to butt plate. Chock full of carbon, two days of soaking and scrubbing to remove. Replaced the O-ring which crumbled in disassembly, oiled, wiped down, took to the range, ran 2 boxes of field loads without a hiccup, fantastic weapon 👏 😀

Purchased a 20 gauge fieldmaster yesterday at rural king. Everything on it is perfect. Action is slick as snot. I wanted a 26" barrel on the 20 gauge but they were clearancing the 28" version and it was 429 vs 499 (for the 26") so I just took the 28" barrel instead of the 26. With the 70 bucks I saved, I put the money towards more ammo and a soft case. Very pleased so far. It's no wingmaster but it is definitely an upgrade to the express models.

I bought a new 870 Fieldmaster 20 gauge specifically for upland game hunting this year, I can tell you the fit and finish is one of the best I’ve seen in a LONG time on anything under $2,000. It reminds me of a Winchester model 70 I really wanted like 14 years ago but I didn’t have the money at the time. It’s very nicely done, but not polished shiny blue like a browning that you don’t even want to get fingerprints on because you can see them from space, no this gun wants to put meat on your table, but there’s nothing that you have to rationalize a justification, excuse or apology for. Like when you buy some guns and your like “well this or that isn’t perfect but that’s okay cause it’s going to get beaten up in the field anyway”, you don’t have to do that with this gun. I’ll tell you I almost bought another Mossberg 500, but after handling the 870 it actually fit me personally better and I much preferred the aesthetics of it, the Mossberg forend looked and felt like a 4x6, and I almost made the excuse “that’s okay cause I know it’ll function fine for what I’ll be using it for”, but I thought this one time, I’m going to spend $100 more and get the gun I REALLY like and I don’t have to make excuses for, and after taking it out in the field, I think it’s a bargain at only $100 more than a Mossberg. Again, not that the Mossberg won’t function fine and everything, but I’ve now owned both a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 Fieldmaster at different times, the Remington didn’t cut up my thumb from loading it all day, the actual was much slicker, the whole gun was just smoother and more intuitive for me. I’m actually glad I bought one when I did, because I put these more in the category of a Browning BPS and I think their price is going to go up shortly. Part of the reason I almost got a Mossberg even though I didn’t like it as well was because there is a LOT of negative press in the gun world regarding Remington quality right now, even the salesman at another store told me “I wouldn’t buy a Remington right now”, fortunately I’ve been part of the gun community long enough and I’ve owned and shot firearms long enough I can usually take what people are saying with a grain of salt and form my own conclusions, and times like this certainly make me appreciate that I don’t just take people word for it.

I’m just now starting to study shotguns as I need one for home defense. I had a few folks tell me I should use a shotgun rather than my Ruger Security 9. This is one of the firearms in stock at my local gun store which I’m researching. Glad to hear they did a good job with the build quality. I’ll be adding it to my list of shotguns I’m interested in. I own a Wingmaster, left hand, bought it in 1956. Came with a modified fixed choke barrel. Bought another barrel in the 1980’s to use screw in chokes. I hate the “Express”. I can’t wait to buy a Fieldmaster in left hand. Thanks Remington.

Very happy to see Remington coming back from the grave. I bought an Express back in the 90's. Have always loved it. Bought a second one around 2007. Slight quality drop. Had to take some sandpaper to it to get it to eject properly, but it runs great now. I did notice the trigger guard on the older one is metal, and the newer one is plastic. Thought that was interesting. Bought a 700 in the 90's as well in 30-06. They all take deer quite well. The Fieldmaster in the video looks very nice. Something to recommend to a younger generation. Local box store has them on sale for $459.99. That's what got me interested in who's making Remington now. Again, really nice to see a positive review.

Oh yeah....I remember seeing Wingmasters and Model 1100s everywhere as a kid......K Mart, Richway, White Auto, Western Auto, even Ace Hardware. Remington was a division of Dupont and there was no real competition above or below....but times changed and Big Green was slow to. I worked for K Mart in 1986 and by then, all the blued steel and shine was gone. We sold 870 Express pumps and matte finish 1100s with black synthetic stocks.

I have been shooting 870s in virtually all forms for the last 50 years I shot an 870 Comp for one of my trap guns shooting 12K rounds a year with that gun, they are also very predictable in when parts are going to be needed, firing pins, the receiver is good for around 450K rounds then the stretch starts to show in the lockup. I shot some very high end trap shoots in both FL and AZ and of course all through the midwest and it always made me proud to have my Comp in the gun rack and there wasnt a gun in the rack that wasnt 15K or many much higher and my 870 Comp. Anybody with the big Italian name guns were always my target and I very seldom lost to them! I have owned many many shotguns over the years some very expensive doubles and un-singles etc. but in the end if I had to only pick ONE to see me through whatever it would be an 870!

I bought a 870 Wingmaster with a 30" fixed full choke barrel in 2 3/4" chamber back in 1981/82 before the days of steel shot for waterfowling.
It has held up wonderfully over the last 40 years and has been used extensively for Doves in the rice fields & brackish marshes of S.E. Texas for Ducks.
Durable as a block of concrete. The blueing has suffered a bit as a result of being carried into the marshes as everything within a few miles of the surf is coated in salt.
My son & nephew carry 870's today though not the Wingmaster (I suspect they are express models) after trying cheaper shotguns from other makers that did not hold up to the rigors of waterfowling.
If the Fieldmaster even comes close to the quality of the Wingmaster I would recommend it to any serious waterfowler.
