Berlin and Munich
Two major cities in Germany, about a 70 minute flight apart, or a five hour train ride apart, or a six hour car ride apart. Both highly influential, both cosmopolitan, both highly desired places to live and work due to an overall high standard of living.
In fact, my friend Willie from the channel KhAnubis actually moved from the United States to Berlin, and he loves it there. He loves it there so much he actually also just released a video all about Berlin over on his channel. Check it out when you’re done here, if you shall dare.
But hey Munich often is at the top of “most livable cities in the world” lists. So let’s compare these two rivals, starting with their similarities.
First of all, the population of the metropolitan areas of both is about the same. (B- 6.1 million, M- 6 million) However, in each city proper, Berlin has a lot more residents than Munich. (B-3.8 million, M- 1.5 million) Berlin also is MUCH bigger in actual area. It’s more spread out, yo.
Both are capitals! Ok, well Munich is just the capital of the German federal state of Bavaria, while Berlin is capital of ALL OF GERMANY. Oh, and it’s literally its own German federal state.
Both have some of the most prestigious universities on the planet and finest museums. Berlin has over 100.
Both have an oceanic climate, and get about the same amount of sunshine on average. However, Munich gets much more precipitation. (B- 515.2 mm, M- 944 mm) Berlin gets a bit colder in the winter, while Munich gets a bit warmer in the summer.
Public transportation is amazing in both cities, but is better in Berlin and yeah more expensive there, too. You’ll see lots of cyclists in both, as both have highly developed bike lane systems. Because both are in Germany, it’s quite legal and quite common to see folks out and about drinking alcohol.
Both have a stock exchange.
Residents of both are not that religious. In fact, around half of all Munich residents and 60% of all Berlin residents have no registered religious affiliation.
Both have hosted the Summer Olympics. Berlin, in 1936, and Munich, in 1972. That Olympics is sadly known for the Munich massacre, in which terrorists killed members of the Israeli Olympic team. The Berlin Olympics is sadly known as the one in which Hitler was in power and he was trying to promote racism and antisemitism at the games.
So which is better? Munich or Berlin? Which two world cities should I cover for this series next?

still if you compare with any other country in Europe (France, Spain, Italy) you can clearly see that German cities were completely destroyed, just look pics or draws of Munich marienplatz before and after the war, is a pity, but the rebuilt was a failure in the entry country
I lived in both cities. Munich is more beautiful and more conservative. Berlin has more diversity and subculture

I will never understand why does anglophones take care of French and Spanish names pronunciation but always disregard German ones.
I don't know, but i personally don't mind it at all. Language is something created und constantly changing. Insisting on a certain pronounciation is not necessary as long the meaning remains recognizable.

Uh... Anglophones can mispronounce words from any language. This presenter just doesn't know German pronunciation.
Probably because most public schools in america offer only spanish and french as a second language(especially in smaller areas). For example in my school didn't even have a choice for any second language, only spanish bc of budget cuts some of my friends took one year of french ended up having to take spanish the next year. That being said americans might have a slight better understanding of spanish/french pronunciations of words rather than german just bc we don't hear it as often

Small correction: almost nobody speaks Bavarian anymore in Munich
It's still the most common dialect. If you hear dialect, it will probably be Bavarian.

yes you usually have to go outside Munich to hear Bavarian, but you can also hear it in small shops and only a few stops outside the city on the S-Bahn

You used to hear the occasional subway driver making manual announcements in Bavarian: «Nächsta Hoit: Oide Hoade». I assume they have migrated to automatic announcements even in the older trains these days?

Munich used to have Stolpersteine, but one person went to court against it saying it is disrespectful to the people whose name is engraved in it. So now, instead of having these plates on the floor, we have them on the walls of houses where these people lived in the old days.
I think it makes sense. After all, you don't wanna be stepping on the plates with the names of the people who are supposed to be remembered.

No, Charlotte Knoblauch, the president of Israelitische Kultusgemeinde München und Oberbayern, mandated that the Stolpersteine not be installed because she felt that people could step on them and such. The City Council of Munich abided by her as not to piss her off.

München has the biggest house rent bubble and the prices are one of the most inflated in Europe.

I lived there 2013-14. I didn’t actually find the prices that outrageous. The issue was rather that 1 in 20 (at most) applications for advertised rooms or apartments would actually get you an invite to a showing, and even then, there would be 15 other applicants there to compete with.
The rents aren't that high compared to the rest of the country. It's the price for actual buying property, that is inflated ad most likely a bubble.

@@HerrLBrodersen the rents are definitely higher than in the rest of the country. Munich has an average price of 22€/m² while Berlin has 14.3€/m², my hometown north of Berlin only has 5.6€/m² and it probably gets even cheaper in the countryside . You get a nice 2-3 bedroom appartment near the city centre where I come from for what you pay for one room in Munich.

I live in Berlin and I like it here, so I’m biased when it comes to this.
Munich seems cleaner and more wealthy, and it’s cool to have the alps nearby.
Berlin is crazier and has more cheap cultural options for young people.
Yeah we have beautiful Alps nearby. But you won‘t be able to walk without being disturbed up there if you drive to lakes like Tegernsee. Too many tourists.

The unique thing about Munich is that while, in common with Berlin, it was destroyed in WWII, the city was rebuilt to the original street pattern.
Both are fascinating cities and are both on my bucket list of cities to visit :)

I know both cities really good, because I lived in Munich for a while and visited Berlin a lot (I have family an friends there). What I can say: both cities couldnt be more diffrent. Most Germans usally "hate" either Berlin or Munich. But you don't have to take site, if you know which city provides which benefits.

@@DivandaAmelia because they are very different, not only in looks but in the mindset of the people living there, I am from Berlin and my boyfriend's family is from Munich, were Berlin is very liberal, Munich is very conservative, Berlin people are less polite then the people from Munich, Berlin is less clean then Munich, and we have a lot of grafitti, but most Berlin people I know tend to be more accepting of LGBTQ or things like that, for the most part they have a "I don't give a shit what you do with your life" attitude, for better or worse, Munich is more historical, Berlin is more modern, and even our dialects (even though today very few people speak with a Dialect) are very hard to understand for the other

The Berlin Airlift was no smuggling - it was a very overt and public operation. The Soviets blocked all roads and train links to West Berlin but still allowed all Western Allied military aircraft to use the designated air corridors.
They didn't expect the Allies to create an air bridge mighty enough to fly in all the food and coal to feed and heat a half-city of around 2 million people plus all the components of a large pre-fab power station.
You couldn't "smuggle" that - and after some 9 months the Soviets realized they were just making asses of themselves and re-opened surface transport.

It's probably been mere coincidence that the Western powers formed a West-German proto-state Bi/Trizone and installed an own currency just before the blockade, funded with Marshall plan money, allowing the Western side to flood the East with the old Reichsmark. As an American, I absolutely adored my time in munich and can’t wait to visit Berlin

Yo, the Munich metro area is a bit silly, it's so big that it takes up about a half of Bavaria. You can't see where it starts and ends from a satelite view. Seems more like a political division or some sort of cooperation platform between the towns in southern Bavaria.
Same for the Berlin Brandenburg metro area, it includes all of Brandenburg which is mostly unpopulated wood and farmland.
For a more accurate impression I would go by the Agglomeration Berlin which has 4.6m inhabitants and Planungsregion München which more closely matches the agglomeration and has 2.9m inhabitants.
I would probably add that Berlin is probably the one city in Germany you can get away with only speaking English. There are a fair amount of Poms and Yanks there.
quite the drastic change over the last decade. First didn't believe it so I traveled up to Berlin and lo and behold indeed foreign university students and expats are all over the place to the point where 30-60% of chatter u hear on the streets is English depending on which district u are in.

Munich is almost as international as Berlin so the same pretty much applies there although if you want to get to know locals and experience the culture then learning at least some German is a good idea.
For the record, been living in Munich 5.5 years now without speaking any German. Things _would_ be easier if I did speak it, but those same things would be easier if one spoke German in Berlin as well. Prime among those, KVR.

Hi, Mr. Beat. I've been following you for quite a while and learned a bit about the USA. Nice to see you making a little video about my hometown Berlin.
Said that, I want the correct a few mistakes.
Berlin was first mentioned written in 1237.
Hitler actually became Reichskanzler (Leader of the government) in 1933 on January 30. He was not elected, but declered by Reichspräsident (head of state) Hindenburg.
Public Transport is still cheaper in Berlin.
And we have not only a lot of wood, but a lot of water here.
One of Berlin's two airports actually is Schönefeld in the federal state of Brandenburg, which is surrounding Berlin. By the end of this month a new big airport near Schönefeld opens and the one in the city of Berlin will be shut down.

I really thought when you mentioned Bayern Munich’s success, you would’ve mentioned that Berlin’s main club, Hertha BSC, have not won a German title since 1932 (and you can argue the Cold War had an impact on why Munich became the more desirable destination for players to create that gap).
Berlin's main club is Union Berlin in east Berlin. They play international this season and have a good season in the Bundesliga too

Glad you mentioned Spattis which may be my fav part of Berlin. You probably needed to touch more on the nightlife and subculture though. Even though in Berlin the subculture is basically not a subculture but just the culture. Techno is a huge part of Berlins history and one of the reasons for its boom.
This is often the selective view of phase-of-life Berliners, who mostly live in their central party district bubble. But Berlin actually has a lot more to offer in terms of culture and techno is not as important to the whole city as the student expats in Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg believe.
Another cool compared video would be between Mumbai and New Delhi.

Munich's public transport is as crowded as a sardine can. When I'm in Munich, I prefer the traffic jams to any trip by public transport.
For Munich sight-seeing you forgot two of the most important museums: "Alte Pinakothek" and "Pinakothek der Moderne".
They house some of the most iconic paintings of European art from old to modern art, including Da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh.
I remember being totally wowed walking into the first gallery that I entered in the Alte Pinakothek and looking across at the incredible self-portrait of Albrecht Durer! The Bavarian National Museum was also a great place to see.
I thoroughly enjoy these videos. I’d love it immensely if you did Calgary and Edmonton.

@@Jack-496 Happy you liked it even on cold, cloudy days. On a warm, sunny day, Isar is a festival. I live a few hundred meters from the river and have the pleasure of running along it every other day. I feel lucky every sunny day I do that and curse every rainy day.
Correction: Munich is much colder in Winter with more snow than Berlin, and Berlin is warmer in Summer too

@@jopo3616 The reason why they aren't paved is because locals believe that it is disrespectful towards the victims because people step on their names. There are many memorial sites in Germany as well as metal signs on housewalls with the names of killed jewish inhabitants

When I see Berlin/Munich, London/Manchester, Madrid/Barcelona, or New York/Los Angeles, France is on of the few occidental countries without a strong rivalry between 2 cities.
We might say Marseille, but Paris is truly the only political/economical/cultural center in France. I’m not saying that France is Paris + the desert, but it’s so overwhelming compared to the other regions.
I'm planning to visit Brussels and Amsterdam some day. And since that's obviously not gonna happen any time soon, please do a video about them soon.

The picture you show at 3:35 actually shows the world-famous Heidelberg Palace (as it was the seat of a reigning monarch, the Lord Elector Palatinate of the Rhine, it was a palace despite its castle-like features), which was owned by the Palatinate-branch of the Wittelsbacher family.

Awesome video!!! Have visited both these cities. While in US Army was stationed in (then) West Germany from 1981-1983 in Frankfurt & 1985-1988 in Nurnberg. Visited Munich and got to experience Oktoberfest twice. Visited Dachau Concentration Camp as well. Had opportunity to visit (then) West Berlin in 1982 for 7 days. Had to travel to West Berlin through a single rail corridor and was only allowed to travel at night due to (then) East German & Soviet restrictions. Got to see the Berlin Wall and Check Point Charlie. Visited East Berlin as well and there was an amazing contrast between the 2 Berlin's!!! Yep - got to agree that Berlin has the better night life - must say out of 7 days in Berlin, was drunk at least 6.5 of those days. Munich was more layed back and relaxed - much like the rest of Bavaria. Also, got to see the re-construction of both cities from the damage that they took during WWII - even in the 1980s, Germany was still re-building. Hope to go back some day and visit both cities again.
So as a person born in munich, let me get this straight: The majority of munich's inhabitants doesn't speak bavarian. Standard german is spoken by a large percentage over here. You have do take a ride on the bavarian countryside several kilometers outside of munich to really meet large groups of bavarian speaking people.
The funny thing is: if you combine the snobby vibe of Munich and the hipster vibe of Berlin you pretty much get Vienna's vibe

There is lack of actual Bavarians in Munich. Most of the people living there have moved from other parts of the country. And even the Bavarian dialect has different versions, although they are not so different, but the Munich dialect has died out due to many immigrants from other parts of the country. Any person speaking Bavarian is speaking a version of the dialect from another part of the 'Bundesland'. The Bavarian culture is also closer to Austrian culture than it is to German culture. The Bavarian dialect is also closer to Austrian German than it is to the standard German. That's why there are many people that want unification with Austria, in fact Bavaria wanted to unify with Austria after WWII but the allied said no

Hi, I'm from Munich. Thanks for the video. A lot of it is kinda correct. Most of the mistakes are already mentioned. In Munich there is definetly less room for creativity, also due to real estate prices. So you, for now, have more creative freedom in Berlin, but in Munich you would get more stuff actually done.
Berlin has a bit more of a real city vibe. Munich is a bit more like a globalised village (all the shops close at 8).
