"45% of South Koreans also speak English" as an English Teacher in South Korea, that's a real stretch. The English language is aggressively taught and marketed as part of the national education curriculum but the metrics for testing English skill, the national high school test (내신, naeshin) and the SAT (수능, sooneung), test an overly academic, archaic, and thus absurd form of English. Korean students, who are legally required to complete their education through elementary school and reportedly soon through high school, are taught rudimentary reading, writing, and listening skills sparingly in public schools and punishingly in private after-school academies. Also this has only been implemented since around 2000. Speaking and listening, especially in tandem, are perhaps the hardest parts of language acquisition, so the vast differences between the alphabets, vocabulary, and grammar of the Korean language and English mean that any old foreigner cannot rock up to South Korea and get around easily with only English like they might be able to in France, Germany, Spain, etc.

@@Eowidk - I was mainly referring to an geographic and economic standpoint. Despite overall stagnation since the early 1990s, Japan is still the third largest economy in the world behind only China and the U.S. China and Japan are also only separated by the East China Sea. Hey South Korean here, appreciate the comment. The regime will fall as all dictatorships do its just a matter when it will be. It could happen in 300 years or it could literally be happening right now as I make this comment. That said Koreans are very iffy about reunification as there a lot of deep issues that come with it. The only way I would even consider reunification is if Kim for some reason steps down and let's the North joins the south's democracy (and that a fever dream lol). Even if that were to happen though, South Korea will go through heavy economic turmoil to try and bring the North up to speed and it doesn't help that the people are all brainwashed slaves. If it isn't carefully planned this could lead to the collapse of both countries. Sorry for the long comment, I went off haha. All in all, we S Koreans don't really want to talk about reunification because of the amount of stress the topic brings up. We just kind of pussyfoot around it and hope the situation will just solve itself somehow
Good video! After living in Korea (no one says South Korea really, when you say Korea they mean South) for four years and enjoying it, most young people and others I met don’t think about reunification or want to really. They are focused on their modern lives and not worried really. All most of them have known is stale mate.
Growing up in West Germany, nobody thought reunification would ever happen either… even though it was part of the West German constitution, but nobody took that really that seriously… Until Gorbachev, his Perestroika and Glasnost, his visit to East Germany … he went for a public walk, talked to some East Germans and basically told them in front of West German TV cameras “ everything will be alright”. Until that moment most Germans thought it will be Soviet tanks in the street again that will end the protests, like in 1953. So you never know until it happens… really the year or month it happens…. so not thinking about it constantly is rather normal, it might still happen, probably depends more on other countries such as China and its support for North Korea

I hope to one day see a United Korea in my lifetime, maybe even including the Korean areas of China. Anyway, another great video Mr. Beat! Can you do Egypt and Sudan next? Or Iraq and Syria?
South Korea has way more people than North Korea so I don't think it would be that expensive. Plus South Korea already is highly urban, so who wouldn't like a rural North?
@@lol-xs9wz idk I fear it will be a repeat of the West German - East German divide, where even after reunification the Eastern part of Germany is still not as developed as the Western part despite significant spending and aid from the west. Another great international "Compared" video. Do a China and Japan Compared video soon. Those two nations are regional rivals and have quite a few similarities, such as modern infrastructure and overall GDP, as well as notable differences, such as system of government and HDI. Vietnam and Laos Compared would be another good "Compared" video. Thailand and Myanmar Compared as well.
China has over 5 times larger GDP than Japan. China has the largest GDP in the world, even larger than America. It makes more sense to compare SK vs Japan, and China vs USA.
@@hellomynameisjoao I think his point is that they are not very alike
@@Eowidk - I was mainly referring to an geographic and economic standpoint. Despite overall stagnation since the early 1990s, Japan is still the third largest economy in the world behind only China and the U.S. China and Japan are also only separated by the East China Sea. Like China today, Japan experienced rapid GDP growth in the second half of the 20th century and was even threatening to surpass the U.S. in the 1980s. Like Japan's GDP growth eventually did, China has seemed to be leveling off in recent years. Their years of double-digit GDP growth appear to be over. I just thought those two would be a good economic and geographic comparison. There are numerous similarities and differences between the two nations.

I'm a Korean living in America. My grandpa fought in the korean war as a student soldier. He's now living a nice life in Seoul. Also what you said for the dialect part is a bit wrong. In different provinces of Korea there are multiple different dialects spoken which is basically accents. My mom for example grew up in Gunsan and calls some things differently than my dad who's from Seoul. Also Seoul doesn't have a population of 25 million. It's the province it's in called Gyeongi - do. Which contains one of the biggest cities of Korea such as Seoul (10 million), Incheon (2.4 million), Suwon, Ansan, Goyang, Songnam, etc.

I hope to one day see a United Korea in my lifetime, maybe even including the Korean areas of China.
