  • Build a CB Radio /Bench Power Supply Using ATX PSU. We all have a broken PC somewhere in our house or place of work and if the going gets tuff, and you cannot find a better PSU for your Radio, you could alway make one from the PSU in that broken Computer (unless the reason it is broken is the power supply).
PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS DANGEROUS TO PLAY WITH MAINS POWER AND YOU SHOULD NOT DO SO UNLESS YOUR ARE QUALIFIED, THIS POWER SUPPLY BUILD IS FOR TEMPORARY USE ONLY AND SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A LONG TERM REPLACEMENT FOR A PURPOSE BUILT PSU.
Copying this video or building your own PSU is done at your own risk.
    Enjoy
I do hope you enjoy it and subscribe for more..
    Many thanks

Always happy too see new content from you. I've used and ATX PSU for bench-top work for years.

Good as a stand-by power supply, I don't fancy using them all the time, apart from the noise that may come out of them (or my not as the case may be) I don't fancy one if it goes faulty! Nothing might survive, though on saying that, we use them in computers and don't give them a second thought. You will not get 13.8V out of them though, but there is one Radio Ham in the states says he has never used anything else and had no problems.
I myself would rather have a linier power supply. That is a personal choice.
If you were moving one around there is a huge weight difference, but then I don't see why anyone would be moving around a power supply very often!
    Nice one again Mike.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I would trust a computer powersupply over any cheap 10A CB powersupply. Computers are far more critical as it comes to ripple and stability.

Nice video, I hacked a pc psu for use with a 6foot string of high power leds, (no discernible noise and no shadows whilst soldering!), I also kept the 5v line for usb charging.

I've found that some blade server PSUs produce extremely clean and stable output. HP comes to mind here.
I had a small project going trying to increase the output voltage to 16 volts for building a uP-controlled high capacity LiFePo battery charger but I had to pause it for a bit.

Great idea. Had one in use for years but limited use at 12v. The instructions I found then put a high wattage 10 ohm resistor on the switch feed not direct short. Ideal for bench test of QRP and various accessories. I put a car connector socket on it as well as PowerPoles and Binding terminals so can plug in usb charger, small iron etc. I reckon its probably 20a but I fused at 10a for safety.

Nice job Mike. I did this hack a few years ago and I have a power supply that gives me about 68 amps at 12 volts. It works great but I would like to be able to increase the voltage to 13.8 volts DC. It can be done but you have to disable or increase the over voltage protection circuit so it does not trip out when you raise the voltage to 13.8 volts. But without a schismatic I'm not sure how to do that. These power supply's have enough amps to run a 100 watt rig to full power and not even get warm. Throw on a few Ferrite Cores and you can clean them up so that you don't get any hash on HF. Hack a 1000 watt computer supply and you have enough amps to run a 500 watt amp like the Ameritron ALS-500M with ease. 73 Joe

Great video. Not flushed with spare cash, I made similar from a disused HP Server PSU and it's done well for me over past 6 months. I was told by some it would make lots of RF noise, but it doesn't.. at least nothing like the neighbours alexa controlled LED lighting system :/

Great way to recycle old power supply I've been doing it for few years some of power supply I've been able do little modification to get 13.8 V XBOX power supply is good to 14 Amps 12 V I run yaesu 8800 for couple years. Great video Mike.

11:30 You can combine -12v and +12v and that makes 24v but it's amp limited.

ATX power supply is just a switching power supply . just add mix 31 ferrites and your good if you have the amps from the ATX power supply

@@user-sw7oh9oy6f 12v will not charge a 12v battery and most kit expects the battery to be fully charged at 13.8v off load.

@@alanjones3873 I know that !! why do you need 13.8V are you designing a Battery Charger or do you just need a 12V PSU ?
Server PSU will give you more Voltage with a tweek or you could easily create a circuit with an input of 12V and an Output of whatever Voltage you want. Just remember to limit the Amperage going into any Battery. Trickle it and you will not damage the Battery. You could throw me a question if you want ~ I have an Electronics Engineer qualification .

    plugs like Anderson

    which one is logical;
    1. to use fuse before 220V power switch
    2. to use fuses before each outputs (3.3, 5, 12v etc)
