    If the chain-driven counterbalancer is not regularly checked, too much or not enough slack can destroy the engine with vibrations. Not sure what happend here, could also be lack of oil
    I had 3 of these DR650 Dakar and R with together over 100'000km and lots of trips to Africa desert and North Europe. Never had a breakdown, loved them

      Yes, the balancer chain needs regular checks, Suzuki recommends every 6000km
      This one failed because the timing chain didn’t have any tension on it and it skipped, allowing the valves to hit the piston, and thus destroying the crankshaft bearing

      The oil filter was removed by the previous owner, it was also full with brass shavings

      One way in my opinion would be checking the timing chain tension by removing the tensioner a seeing what distance
      Is left for the tensioner to work in.
      The service manual shows how to measure the chain slack, but the biggest problem in my opinion is that the sliders wear out or become hard and brittle and don’t proved the same tension. Checking them isn’t easy, you have to remove the head to take them both out.
