I started doing shotgun classes with a Mossberg 590 pump 20 gauge ($500), because the 12 gauge recoil was a bit much (60 yr old weaker man). Now they make a 12 gauge 590s which does shorties. Federal buckshot shorties inside of house distances are good and recoil is less and capacity is more. However, I tried a semi-auto 12 gauge MAC 1014 clone of a Benelli M4 instead ($400). The recoil was very reduced, and I shot 230 high velocity buckshot and slugs in a single setting with 0 failures or shoulder pain.
