I mean a whole essay could be written about how problematic it is that flamboyant men or masculine women are PRESUMED to be some other gender, rather than just being a dude who's feminine or a chick who's masculine. But that's a whole other topic. Angel is just a dude that likes dressing up, and he's not any less of a guy because of it, nor is he a guy in spite of it.

There are gender fluid people who do drag, but there is a certain bias among cishet audiences that doing drag is just what being gender fluid just is in its entirety, and I think Viv wanted to avoid that potentially harmful messaging. I think the current set up we have in the Hazbin cast is perfectly servicable, since we have a range of characters who express at all different points on the gender spectrum and have a large diversity of orientations on top of that. That way if a character is more stereotypically feminine and also gay like Angel we have characters who still buck that trend, so the representation comes off as more authentic since its not just one gay character embodying all the gay tropes.
I imagine it probably won't be an absolute factor in the show, but I really hope she still uses the feral/creature-like forms for some scenes in Hazbin. It can create some REALLY interesting scenes and build up to really show just how demonic these demon characters can get. Plus, terrifying animated creatures are a plus in my book.
I think they'll keep that. The pilot and Alastor's prequel comic hint to it with Alastor having a clearly more demonic secondary form that he can morph in and out of at will. Similar for Charlie, with her temporarily growing horns, having red scleras, and all of her teeth becoming sharp for a moment during her musical number.

I remember being a really big fan of Angel Dust a few years ago when I first found his concept stuff. one thing I found really interesting about his character was that, originally, the duller the pink in his fur appeared, the soberer he was; so this meant that Angel was almost never sober. I just thought that was kinda a fun concept but understand if it was changed before Hazbin Hotel's pilot

His current design is bright and looks good on him. 👌. I just prefer his current design’s coloring. I haven’t known of Vivziepop until pretty recently. I very recently looked at her old stuff, but I prefer her newest stuff. The designs are better and the drawing talent is better. In my opinion.
I agree with that sentence of trying to balance old Angel dust with him constantly pranking and always screaming is pretty difficult anyways im glad that Vivz toned down Angel's character.
I think she only toned him down a little bit by the time Hazbin Hotel rolled around. Not a whole lot. He's still got some interesting things about him, just look at the "Addict" music video.
Yeah now she has a generic looking outfit and her color palette is no different from anyone else's, I can understand why because animation is hard as hell but still, I liked her pilot design better :(

What’s cool, they do confirm on multiple occasions that he is gay throughout the pilot, but address the elephant in the room with his sex work through the comics that he COULD sleep with women but it’ll be an extra cost. Otherwise, he’s an entirely gay character. I appreciate Viv’s details, lots of show don’t tell, especially in the representation department 😁👌🏼
I knew about viv since like 2013 or 14 hard to say, but I used to look at ALL of her art stuff whenever I had the chance, hazbin hotel, zoophobia. But I never expected angel to come so far, she did a great job with his growth but still keeping him as chaotic from when I first saw his sketches

I agree with most of this. I can't confirm the gender fluid fact, but I got turned onto HH from my Cousin way back (the same design time period that you said you got into it). I really liked the idea of (what I heard at the time was he was male and gay) an openly gay male character that was crazy and violent (he seemed very fun, kinda Joker like). So seeing the evolution of my first and favorite HH character as a reminder (with some things I didn't know too) was really cool. Great video.👍
